The front speakers should be placedthe same distance from each other asthey are from the listening position. They should be placed at about thesame height from the floor as thelisteners’ ears will be, or they may beangled toward the listeners.

The center channel speaker shouldbe placed slightly behind the front leftand right speakers, and no more than60 cm above or below the tweeters ofthe left and right speakers. It is oftenconvenient to set the center speakeron top of the television set, as shownin the drawing. Use the suppliedsupport leg to aim it toward thelistener by screwing the leg in toangle the speaker up, or unscrewingthe leg slightly to angle the speakerdown (applies to the DSC400 only).

The rear delay settings in this systemhave been set so that the optimumposition from the listener is 1m. Thetwo surround speakers should beplaced slightly behind the listeningposition and, ideally, should faceeach other and be at a level higherthan the listeners’ ears. If that is notpossible, they may be placed on awall behind the listening position, facing forward. The surroundspeakers should not call attention tothemselves. Experiment with theirplacement until you hear a diffuse, ambient sound accompanying themain program material heard in thefront speakers.

The low-frequency materialreproduced by the subwoofer ismostly omnidirectional, and thisspeaker may be placed in aconvenient location in the room. However, the best reproduction ofbass will be heard when thesubwoofer is placed in a corner alongthe same wall as the front speakers.Experiment with subwooferplacement by temporarily placing thesubwoofer in the listening positionand moving around the room until thebass reproduction is best. Place thesubwoofer in that location.

Note: To ensure adequate ventilation, allow a minimum distance of 10cmbetween the subwoofer andsurrounding walls.

D S C S Y S T E M C O N N E C T I O NCaution: Always make certain that the controller and the subwoofer are turned off before connecting or disconnecting anything.

Connecting the Controller tothe SubwooferConnect the special multi-pin cable(included) to the output marked"System Audio Output" on thecontroller and to the input marked

"System Audio Input" on thesubwoofer. This sends the bass/LowFrequency Effects signal to thesubwoofer's own 100 Watt amplifierand sends the three front and tworear channels to the five 35 Wattamplifiers

conveniently built into the subwooferto power your DSC satellite speakers.

(DSC400 Only)

Connect the special error-proofconnectors at the loudspeaker endof each cable to the correct loud-speaker. Make certain to connect theright front output on the subwooferto the right front speaker, centeroutput to center speaker, etc.

(DSC800 Only)

Remove 1/2 cm of insulation from theloudspeaker end of each cable.Connect the "+" conductor (markedwith a stripe) to the red "+" terminal

of the appropriate loudspeaker andthe "-" conductor to the black "-"terminal of the loudspeaker. Makecertain to connect the right frontoutput on the subwoofer to the rightfront speaker, center output to centerspeaker, etc. It is important toconnect all speakers correctly, withplus wire to plus terminal and minuswire to minus terminal. Incorrect "outof phase" wiring will result in thinsound, weak bass and a poor stereoimage.

Connecting the Subwooferto the SatellitesYour DSC system includes cables forconnection of all five satellitespeakers to the subwoofer. Connectthe special error-proof connectors atthe subwoofer end of each cable tothe appropriately marked sockets onthe rear of the subwoofer. Owners ofthe DSC400 system should follow theinstructions in the section marked"DSC400 Only" for cable connection tothe DSC400 satellites. Owners of theDSC800 system should follow theinstructions in the section marked"DSC800 Only" for cable connection tothe DSC800 satellites. T V, A U D I O A N D P O W E R C O N N E C T I O N SA N D S U B A U T O O NConnecting the TV andoptional componentsTV Connection (method 1) - using SCART cable (cable included)To view the video from DVD discs onyour TV set, connect the SCART TVOut jack of this system to the SCARTIn jack of your TV set. If this connec-tion is made, the audio signal will alsobe routed to the TV, but as long as thespeakers of your JBL DSC system areactive, the volume on your TV shouldbe turned down.

TV Connection (method 2) - using S-Video cableIf your TV set has an S-Video InputJack you can connect your TV to theS-Video Out Jack on the back of thissystem (the S-Video connection cableis not included). The S-Video connec-tion will provide the best picture qua-lity if your TV is equipped to handle S-Video signals. We recommend usingthe S-Video connection if your TV hasan S-Video input jack. When con-necting the DSC100DVD unit in thismanner, use the AUX Audio Input tocarry the audio signal from your TV.Connecting more than one videosignal output from the DSC100DVDunit will result in degradation of thevideo signal.

TV Connection (method 2) - using video cord:If your TV set has neither S-Video norSCART Input jacks, connect the VideoOut jack of this system, to the Video Injack of your TV set (Composite videocable not included). When connecting

the DSC100DVD unit in this manner, use the AUX Audio Input to carry theaudio signal from your TV. Connectingmore than one video signal outputfrom the DSC100DVD unit will result indegradation of the video signal.

Connecting VCR and Sat Decoder(method 3 and 4)Diagrams 3 and 4 show possibleconnection methods for commonsystem configurations. These areintended as guidelines only. Due todifferences in equipment specifi-cations, the method of connection ofyour equipment may be different tothat shown. Please consult theOwner’s Manual of your equipmentfor further guidance.

Aux Input for External SourceYou may connect a line-level stereoanalog audio source such as a Satreceiver, tape deck, phono preamp ofa record player, etc. to the controller'srear panel AUX Input sockets to enjoythe benefits of your DSC system withother source components.

• VCR Connection-Audio (Cables Not Included)To listen to the sound from yourstereo VCR through the speakers ofthis system, connect the Left/Rightaudio output jacks of your stereoVCR to the Left/Right audio inputjacks (AUX) of this system.

• Audio Out ConnectionsTo record the sound of the DSCsystem with your VCR or any audiorecording device (tape deck, MD,

CDR and some others.) the AudioOut jacks should be connected tothe analog Record In jacks of theappropriate device. They can alsobe connected to any audio input onyour TV, as shown in the diagrams,to listen to the sound of yourDSC100DVD through the speakers ofyour TV only, when the amp in yoursubwoofer is turned off. As soon asthe speakers of your JBL DSCsystem are active, the volume onyour TV should be turned down.

Connecting the AC PowerNotes• The Power Requirement is: AC 230V,

50 Hz.• Connecting to power other than the

one listed above may damage thesystem or cause abnormaloperation.

• Before connecting the AC powercord of this system to a wall outlet, connect the speakers and othercomponent cables to the system.

• Connect the AC power cord of theactive subwoofer.

• Connect the AC power cords of yourTV and any optional components toa wall outlet.

Subwoofer Auto-OnMove the Power Switch on the rearpanel of the subwoofer to the ONposition to use the system. The sub-woofer should normally be left on.When the controller is off, or is notsending a signal to the subwoofer, thesubwoofer will be in standby. Whenthe subwoofer senses an audiosignal, it will automatically turn itselfon. If the subwoofer does not sense asignal after approximately twentyminutes, it will automatically go intostandby.

After you have connected the systemand positioned the speakers, the nextstep is to adjust the level of eachsatellite, using the Test Tone, so thattheir levels at your normal listeningposition are identical. Thisadjustment should be made with theTest Tone only, not while you arewatching a DVD movie.

Remember that the rear speakers aredesigned to operate only when thereis action, ambience or effects behindyou. If you adjust the level of the rearspeakers incorrectly so that youconstantly hear sound behind you,you will not get the proper surroundeffect.

1. Turn your system on.

• Press POWER on the front panel toturn the system ON.

• Sit in your normal listening positionand press STANDBY on the remotecontrol, if the system has not turnedon already. The unit will go into theActive mode and the main displaywill come on and show "NO DISC", ifthe tray is empty still.

• Turn on your TV and select the inputon the TV to which the controller isconnected. The words "NO DISC"should appear on your TV, if the trayis empty.

• Insert a DVD disc.• If a disc is loaded already or if a

source different from DVD player is

selected, note that all six speakericons in the display are on (seepage 6), otherwise press LISTENINGon the remote until this is the case.

• Stop any external source, whenplaying, and turn the volume until"VOL 20" is displayed.

2. Press TEST TONE on the remotecontrol. The test tone will start atthe front left (FL) speaker. After 3seconds the sound will move to thecenter (C) speaker, and then to thefront right (FR), surround right (SR)and surround left (SL) speakers insuccession. The main display andthe TV screen will show the word"TEST" and will also indicate which

speaker is operating. The test tonecontinues cycling among the 5speakers indefinitely.

3. All 5 satellite speakers have beenpre-set to the same level (00 dB). Ifthe level of the tone from all 5speakers is the same at yournormal listening position, no furtheradjustment is necessary. PressTEST TONE again to cancel the testtone function. You can skip step 4and go to the next section.

4. If the level of all 5 speakers doesnot sound the same at your normallistening position you can adjusteach speaker up or down, 10 dB in1 dB steps. For example, if the testtone from the surround speakers

A D J U S T I N G S P E A K E R L E V E L S

sounds lower than the frontspeakers when the front paneldisplay and the TV screen indicatethat the tone is coming from thesurround right (SR) speaker, pressthe VOL + button on the remotecontrol to increase the level of thatspeaker. The front panel and TVscreen will show the new levelsetting. After a few seconds thenew setting will be memorized andthe test tone will move to thesurround left (SL) speaker. Adjustthe surround left (SL) speaker inthe same manner.

Then listen to the tone from all 5speakers again to verify that the levelsounds the same at your normallistening position. Re-adjust eachspeaker up or down as required andpress TEST TONE once more tocancel the test tone function.

Note: When matching the level ofeach of the individual satellitespeakers, it is preferable to match thelevels to the quietest channel. Thiswill give you more flexibility whenadjusting the subwoofer level.

After this setting is made all speakerlevels will be adjusted for anysurround mode and any sourceselected.

Subwoofer Level AdjustmentOnce the level of the 5 satellitespeakers has been set, you canadjust the level of the subwoofer tomatch. Insert a DVD disc and play apassage that you are familiar with.Using the SELECT button on theremote, select the subwoofer leveladjustment. Increase or decrease thelevel of the subwoofer until you aresatisfied with its level, relative to the5 satellite speakers.

RDS OperationThe JBL DSC100DVD is equipped withRDS (Radio Data System), which bringsa wide range of information to FMradio. Now in use in many countries,RDS is a system for transmitting e.g.station call signs or networkinformation and a description of stationprogram type (PTY).

As more FM stations becomeequipped with RDS capabilities, theJBL DSC100DVD will serve as an easy-to-use center for both information andentertainment. This section will helpyou take maximum advantage of theRDS system.

RDS TuningWhen an FM station is tuned in and itcontains RDS data, the red RDSIndicator will illuminate and the JBLDSC100DVD will automatically displaythe station’s call sign, e.g. "ANTENNE1"in the front panel display (up to 8characters are possible). With someprivate stations, other information mayalternate with the station´s call sign.

RDS Display OptionsIn normal RDS operation, the displaywill indicate the station name, broad-cast network or call letters. Pressingthe DISPLAY button enables you tocycle through the following sequence:

• The station’s call letters (with someprivate stations other information, too).

DTS Available only with digital input sources encoded with DTS data. Available on special DVD, LD andaudio-only discs, DTS provides up to five separate main audio channels and a special dedicated lowfrequency channel.

PRO LOGIC The standard mode for analog surround sound decoding. It uses information encoded in a two channelstereo recording to produce four distinct outputs: Left, Center, Right and a Mono Surround channel. Usethis mode for accurate reproduction of programs bearing the Dolby Surround, DTS Stereo, UltraStereoor other “Surround” logos. Surround-encoded programs include videocassette, DVD and LD movies, TVand cable programs, radio programs and audio CDs. Dolby Pro Logic processing may also be used toprovide a pleasing surround effect with some stereophonic source material that does not carry surroundencoding.

3 STEREO Uses the information contained in a surround encoded or two channel stereo program to create centerchannel information. In addition, the information that is normally sent to the rear channel surroundspeakers is carefully mixed in with the front left and front right channels for increased realism. Use thismode when you have a center channel speaker but no surround speakers.

SURROUND This mode turns off all surround processing and presents the pure left and right channel presentation OFF (STEREO) of two channel stereo programs.

Bit rateValue indicating the amount of videodata compressed in a DVD persecond. The unit is Mbps (megabitper second). 1 Mbps indicates thatthe data per second is 1,000,000 bits. The higher the bit rate, the larger theamount of data. However, this doesnot always mean higher qualitypictures.

ChapterSections of a picture or a music pieceon a DVD that are smaller than titles. Many titles are composed of severalchapters, but many others are not. Each chapter is assigned a chapternumber enabling you to locate thechapter you want.

Dolby Digital (“5.1”, “AC-3”)This sound format for movie theatersis more advanced than Dolby ProLogic Surround. In this format, therear speakers output stereo soundwith an expanded frequency rangeand a subwoofer channel for deepbass is independently provided. Thisformat is also called “5.1” becausethe subwoofer channel is counted as0.1 channel (since it functions onlywhen a deep bass effect is needed). All six channels in this format arerecorded separately for superiorchannel separation. Furthermore, since all the signals are processeddigitally, less signal degradationoccurs. The name “AC-3” comesfrom the fact that it is the third audiocoding method to be developed bythe Dolby Laboratories LicensingCorporation.

Dolby Pro Logic SurroundThis is a method of decodingsurround recordings that producesfour channels from two-channelsound. Compared with the formerDolby Surround system, Dolby Pro

Logic Surround reproduces left-to-right panning more naturally andlocalizes sounds more precisely. Totake full advantage of Dolby Pro LogicSurround, you should have a pair ofrear speakers and a center speaker. The rear speakers output monauralsound.

DTSDigital audio compression technologydeveloped by Digital TheaterSystems, Inc. This technologyconforms to 5.1-channel surround. The rear channels are stereo andthere is a discrete subwooferchannel in this format. DTS provides5.1 discrete channels of high qualitydigital audio. Good channelseparation is realized, because allchannels are recorded discretely andprocessed digitally.

MPEG AUDIOInternational standard coding systemto compress audio digital signalsauthorized by ISO/IEC. MPEG 1conforms to up to 2-channel stereo, used on some DVD’s as alternate(other language) track.

DVDA disc that contains up to 8 hours ofmoving pictures even though itsdiameter is the same as a CD. Thedata capacity of a single-layer andsingle-sided DVD, at 4.7 GB (GigaByte), is 7 times that of a CD.Furthermore, the data capacity of adual-layer and single-sided DVD is 8.5GB, a single-layer and double-sidedDVD 9.4 GB, and a dual-layer anddouble-sided DVD 17 GB. The picturedata uses the MPEG 2 format, one ofthe worldwide standards of digitalcompression technology. The picturedata is compressed to about 1/40 ofits original size. The DVD also uses

the variable rate coding technologythat changes the data to be allocatedaccording to the status of the picture. The audio data is recorded in DolbyDigital, DTS and/or PCM, allowingyou to enjoy more natural audiopresence. Furthermore, variousadvanced functions such as multi-angle, multilingual, and subtitles maybe provided with the DVD.

Multi-angle functionVarious angles or viewpoints of thevideo camera for a scene arerecorded on some DVDs.

Multilingual function Several languages for the sound orsubtitles in a picture are recorded onsome DVDs.

Parental ControlA function of some (particulary US)DVD’s to limit playback of the disc bythe age of the users. The limitationvaries from disc to disc. When it isactivated, playback is completelyprohibited, violent scenes areskipped or replaced with otherscenes and so on.
