Commodore's Report

Welcome to the New Year. I hope all members had a good Xmas break.

2016 will be a big year for the WMYC with our veranda refurbishment plans hopefully starting in the first half of the year. The committee and our architect – Tim, have put a lot of work into ensuring that the plans enhance the current area. We have also tried to ensure that our plans to not preclude any further expansion that future committees may consider.

We also plan to have a successful social program in 2016 with an expanded program. We will feed off Randell’s enthusiasm and his range of new ideas to get more people to want down to the clubhouse and have a great time. Some of his ideas are great music, member’s draws, an art show and the clubhouse being open more often. I hope you support his efforts to get the social side of things moving.

The sailing year is going to be strong as well, including our premier sailing events, being the St Helena Cup, the ladies skippers race and the classic yacht weekend. We also have the combined clubs and the popular shorthanded races. I encourage you to have a go and enter some or all of our races through the year.

Darcy and Julie also have a full great cruising program for the year. The weekend events that these guys organise are a fantastic way for members to get together, share stories and enjoy each others company, and I once again encourage you to participate.

That’s about enough about our plans for the year. I look to forward to seeing you all around the club and on the water.

Peter Miller, Commodore - Exile

John Tunney, Marina Manager for Marina Board

Hello Everyone,Happy New Year ! I hope you are off to a good start in 2016 with plenty of boating activities over the holidays. The marina office is back to full strength with Sonja’s return from her long holiday in Mexico. Our slipway trolleys continue at near full capacity and our berth occupancy level is the envy of all the other marinas in Manly Harbour.

In the last issue of Soundings we published a list of berths for sale and the asking prices. What a response !

As you all know, our leases have been extended to 2053 and there is a lot of interest from potential buyers. An updated list is towards the end of this article.Marina Company Annual General MeetingWe had our Marina Company Annual General Meeting back in November and I must say it was one of the most positive, good discussion, and friendly atmosphere meetings I have ever attended. We even caught one of our best friends who always comments on the company phone bill year after year smiling at the end of the evening!

My special thanks go to everybody who was able to attend our yearly AGM, and of course, to Ian Heathwood and Ian Skelsey, who brought to the meeting some very interesting and important items of discussion in regard to title registration of our marina berths. For days and days after the meeting, we had berth owners dropping into the marina office and commenting on how successful the AGM was.

So about getting your berths registered by the State Government Titles Office - Our newly elected Board intends to hold a special meeting for all berth owners around March 2016 on the issue of title registration of our marina berths. As I understand at the time of writing this article, the registration of marina berths with the State Government Titles Office has not been available until recently, and it is optional for each berth owner. There will be Pros & Cons on the matter. No doubt Ian Heathwood and Ian Skelsey will be there to provide vital information that will help us onto the preferred course to follow, and we can then vote on the action for the Board to undertake. There will be an information newsletter sent out to all berth owners before the March meeting so that you will have a chance to get up to speed with what it’s all about.

Pile Replacement ProjectThe project was completed on time and on budget. There was quite an audience when the first pile on K row was replaced. This was judgement day. I could overhear some whispers from behind that the pile just pulled out looked longer than the ones we’ve purchased! I was so relieved when the old one was laid to rest alongside the new ones on the work barge. Yes, the lengths matched up perfectly. Our thanks go to Todkill’s Marine Services and Bayside Pontoon Repairs who carried out this big job of replacing 19 marina guide piles in a very safe and professional manner. Our thanks also go to all of the boat owners who helped out in the movement of boats so that the 60 foot main barge could gain access to each site where the piles needed replacing. And how could it have been done without our Karen from the marina office – the mastermind, the marina traffic controller, the one who worked out all the moves for the boats affected by the job at each of the 19 sites. Well Done Karen !

Let’s Talk SafetyPlease remember to keep the marina walkways and berth fingers free of obstacles, and position your boat so that your anchor or any protrusions do not extend over the walkway or fingers in both calm and windy conditions. Securing up your mooring lines in a manner that they cross to the other side of the walkway finger is not allowed. It creates a trip hazard for your neighbour when departing or returning to the berth. It is an obstacle on the walkway finger, regardless whether it is at the front, middle, or outer end of the walkway finger.

Within the waterways of our marina the speed limit is 4 knots and no wash. Please keep this in mind when your boat is arriving and departing our marina. Berths for Sale There are currently a number of marina berths listed for sale. The following list provides a range of asking prices from the owners. If you are interested in purchasing a marina berth, contact the marina office on 3396 4639 and we can arrange to put you in contact with the seller. The marina company does not act as an agent, broker, or collect any commissions upon the sale of marina berths.

When you own a marina berth you become a shareholder in the Marina Company. In 2014, our leases were extended to 2053.

The 2015 WMSC sailing season finished with the completion of the Manly Combined Clubs race 14 which incorporates the WMSC point score series. This has been a highly competitive series jostling with boats from the other Manly Harbour clubs. The away weekends at Sandgate and Karragarra are great racing and socialising weekends. Next year all boats need to register through the Manly Combined Club website as the duplication through our website has proved confusing for the organisers. WMSC started the series with a good number of boats but this diminished through the year with a low turnout for the final races. Hopefully next year will see more boats entered for this excellent series.

The Summer and Winter shorthanded program again proved popular with over 20 boats sailing in both series. The standard was again high with tight racing in all races. This format appeals to members for several reasons including the heightened skills needed required as well as not having to source a full racing crew. This series will again be given a high priority with the sponsors, Ullman Sails and Muir Marine signing up for 2016.

The Hart Cup at Easter was a success this year with 14 boats lining up on Good Friday for the run to Mooloolaba. The wind gods were kind with all boats finishing in daylight. The higher Cat 4 safety rating did not seem to deter entrants and we are hopeful that we can grow numbers for this race in 2016.

The Traditional boat regatta / Vic Lucas Cup was a great weekend which profiled our WMSC Traditional boats as well as our visiting guests. Greg Doolan has done a great job promoting the Trad boats and our club. I know that 2016 will again be an excellent year with building numbers.

The SAGS fleet has been a great success this year with regularly over 20 boats competing. Club members are certainly voting with their feet and strongly supporting this racing. I applaud the organisers who make this a success every Sunday. May the numbers continue to grow!

The Lady Skippers and St Helena Cup were grand events this year attracting great fleets and excellent sailing. All the hard work of the committee and many club members paid off in our showcase races. We cannot rest on our laurels as the boat numbers are never guaranteed. We however can build on our successes and think of new ways to promote and run the races.

Finally I wish to thank all those who have helped throughout the year and a particular thanks to our start boat owners, Col Ramsey, George Macdonald and Tony Shoesmith. They and their crews have given our races a highly professional standing which reflects extremely well on our club.

Seawind Catamaran’s Annual Rally series hosted by Multihull Central had its final race in the middle of November on the beautiful waters of Moreton Bay. The series which is held as separate rallies in the Whitsundays, Brisbane and Sydney is open to all Seawind catamarans either chartered or privately owned. The hotly contested events consist of racing with a number of social functions and are the highlight of the sailing season for many Seawind owners and their crew. Not only do they allow owners to gauge and improve their performance but they are a great social occasion with a lot of fun had, tales told and lasting friendships formed.

Generously hosted by Wynnum Manly Yacht Club Brisbane’s Seawind Rally was held on the picturesque Moreton Bay with the fleet enjoying mixed conditions. Friday afternoon’s Test & Tune sail had most of the fleet out enjoying the beautiful Queensland weather in perfect conditions before heading back to Wynnum Manly Yacht Club for a BBQ and drinks. Saturday woke to a grey overcast sky and the heavens opened up at the start of the first race placing a blanket on the breeze and becalming the fleet. The race was shortened and lunch held before heading off on the second race in better but still quiet conditions. The presentation that evening was held back at the yacht club with a three course dinner, live jazz and a generous bar tab. The overall winner was Alan Hunter on his Seawind 1160, Talisker, following up on his win in this year’s Hamilton Island Race Week.

As with all the Seawind Catamaran events held throughout the world, everyone had a great weekend of sailing, lot of fun, caught up with old friends, made new friends and came away looking forward to next years Rallies.

On Sunday 13th December, the Wynnum Manly Yacht Club wrapped up another year of Sunday Afternoon Sailing (SAGS) with a Club Christmas Lunch followed by trophy presentations.

The morning kicked off with 50 to 60 children and grand-children of club members enjoying the jumping castle and face painting. The light showers cleared and Santa arrived by dinghy to the excited cheers of the children lining the fence. As always the kids were delighted to receive their gifts from Santa, many getting their photo taken with the jolly man in red, with even a few mothers keen to get into a picture.

The excitement of new toys had to be parked for a while as a Christmas buffet lunch was served and enjoyed by the large crowd hanging around for the fun. Straight after lunch the band cranked up and kept the party rocking into the afternoon. It was time for the big kids to play and entertain us with some very interesting moves on the dance floor.

As has been reported in Soundings throughout the year, we enjoyed a very strong participation in the SAGS races this

year, with fleets of over twenty boats quite common. Many of the regular participants were at the party to reap the rewards of the sailing they all do for the love of.

The winner for the first half of the year was Dudley Young on Tropical Cat.

Winning the competition for the second half of the year was David MacKinnon on Figment.

The winner for of the overall competition for the whole year was Dudley Young on Tropical Cat. In second place was Roland Ebelt on Petrel and third place went to John Vandermaat on Haze. An honorary second place award is also issued to Graham Holley who started the year on Orion and finished the season on the beautiful Super Molli. His combined points for both boats put him up there with the place getters.

We look forward to seeing all the boats back for the SAGS season next year, kicking off on Sunday 24th January and hope to welcome any new comers. It’s a great opportunity to get your boat out and sail in company without the pressure of serious racing.

Hi to all WMYC members

Next year 2016, your social committee is going to start a new initiative

Approximately four times a year we will hold a Saturday morning

WMYC Men's BreakfastThe mission is to facilitate men getting together and communication with other men. Men who love messing around in boats will be able to share their passion with like minded men.

The men's only social event is designed to support men's health and well being.

The Breakfast will be self-sufficient with all, catering cooking and cleaning done by participating men.

The breakfast will be conducted inside the clubhouse with tables set motel dinning room style. We plan to seat 8 attendees to a table. Our breakfast Chairman will welcome everyone and then a light cooked breakfast will be enjoyed at the tables with lots of good conversation. Towards the end of breakfast we will have with a discussion using a format not unlike that of the ABC’s “Q and A”.

Attendee’s will have had the opportunity to bring a short written question with them (20 words or less) to be placed into a box. At the tea and coffee end of breakfast the Chairman will draw a question out and after about 10 mins discussion each table of 8 eight will nominate one of their number to present their consensus answer.

Questions for consideration will be limited to issues related to “messing about and looking after boats “ eg. How to get that rust stain out of the sail? Glass mat or wet batteries, which are best? How best to apply two pack paint without using a spray gun? What is the easiest way to single hand anchor in the Bay?

Times: Saturdays 7:30am to 9:45am.

Food: Bacon, eggs, beans, tomatoes, Juices, coffee & tea Etc.

Cost: We will be asking for donations on the day.

December Brisbane Cruise

Darcy and Julie Glister, Cruising - R&RThe formula for a good week end of boating was just right. It started with a plan, a choice of destination, an invitation to like minded fun loving people, some food, some wine and some song, and the rest was easy.

We started at our club on Friday night, punctual as always, our enthusiastic cruisers started to arrive around six. Peter our bar manager ensured no one went thirsty , Flinders Cafe ensured no one went hungry and the band ensured we were entertained. It was a great night, and it was good to meet the new bright faces like Jill from White Haven, Graham and Sue from Portia 11. Why is it when we are enjoying ourselves the evening is over in the blink of an eye and we are headed for our bunks.

0700 - Tony and Bernadette off First Light, true to the vessel name, was first to sail out of the marina, quickly followed by the rest. 0745 on Ch 77 was roll call, and promptly and clearly the flotilla signed on. I was a little surprised to hear the clear crisp voices come back, as some had had a big night at the club the night before.

Neil and Averil from Carabosse took the lead as we entered the river and with their excellent knowledge of this historical river we knew we were in good hands as they steered us up the river to our rendezvous point at Colmslie Reserve. White Haven took on more crew to either work in the galley as slaves or to stoke the boilers, R & R took on three passengers, Col & Leanne off Incite and Chris Ayres from Lady Lonsdale. We consolidated the crews and boats and at approximately 1130 hours we set off up the river, cruising in fine company. Neil and Averil had provided us with a list of detailed land marks and history of the river and as we traversed this aquatic waterway, we witnessed how our once country town has transformed into a thriving metropolis. Slowly we navigated up the river and rounded each bend like the movie African Queen there was always a changing landscape, a mix of new and old, some buildings and fixtures had stood the test of strength against the forces of nature and the ones that didn’t floated away and were replaced by new and more modern structures.

A little past the University of Queensland (UQ) we turned and headed back down stream, now on the opposite side of the river. Virgin cruiser Leanne, on board R&R, headed a campaign to stop for an icecream at Southbank and threatened mutiny, unless the skipper stopped. Out numbered the skipper succumbed to pressure, dropped anchor in front of the cement pond and rowed ashore. It was heard later that other members in our fleet had the same idea, but those skippers could not be overpowered.

At approximately 1700 hours all skippers and crew went ashore where we mingled and enjoyed our traditional sundowners. At 1830 the galley slaves served up a Xmas feast Saint Nick would be proud of. The table had a beautiful xmas table cloth, there was leg ham, marinated chicken wings and drum sticks, fruit salad, garden salads, rice salads, pasta salads, sweet’n’sour. I was personally moved by the thought of how everyone had gone to some much trouble to make this a Xmas cruise to remember. Sylvia Bryant said Grace and at that moment a Xmas tree with the Star of David came to light on the back of Ocean Maid, making the evening very special. Ocean Maid won the $25 voucher generously donated each cruise by Muir Marine.

December Brisbane Cruise

After dinner the cruisers retired to their vessels and on a ebbing tide were able to view the purple light display of the Gateway Bridge while enjoying a night cap.

Sunday 0800 hours engines were started and the vessels steamed down stream to the Fort Lytton reach. The crews from each vessel tendered ashore and were met by other WMYC members, increasing the ranks to enjoy the fully guided tour of the Fort Lytton Historical Museum, plus have their hearing tested by the sounds of the forts cannons. Name and name the grand children of David and Cathy from Sutherland loved the blast of the 64 pounder , you could feel the pressure in your chest as the big one cracked. Great for the adrenalin. There was plenty to see and a step back in time. On display also was the Military Jeep club’s fine collection of vehicles.

The tour continued for several hours and was enjoyed by all, but with the sun now well past midday all cruisers said farewell and headed back to their boats, it was time to way anchor and head for home port.

Unfortunately, not all the cruisers were able to attend the full program for the whole week end and it was pleasing to see that comradery in the club was demonstrated by their attendences either in full or in part over the weekend. We wish to thank you and wish you all a very merry and safe Christmas and a healthy prosperous New Year in 2016.

In attendance over the weekend were R&R, Carabosse, Ocean Maid, Iggy Pop, White Haven, Pacific Gem, Lady Lonsdale, Ballore, Seacret, Abdul, Stardust, First Light, Portia 11, Sutherland, Incite, White Star, Summer Dream, Silver Dawn, Watakai, Adamant, Tardis and 9Q a total of 45 people.

Sailors Dictionary

WWake1. Horizontal track in the water caused by passage of a boat 2.Ceremony held if that track becomes vertical.

Weather HelmMarked tendency of a sailboat to turn into the wind, even when the rudder is centered. This is easily counted by wedging a heavy object against the tiller. See CREW.

Weigh AnchorTo raise the anchor. This odd terminology may derive from the fact that everytime the anchor is pulled up - almost always by hand on sailboats -an excellent opportunity is presented to the crew members hauling it up to gain a good working idea of its weight, which is generally considerable and, apart from minute changes caused by corrosion, quite consistent from one weighing to another. Still, it is a source of cheer and comfort to many that in a constantly changing nautical environment, 30 or more deadweight pounds of metal are "hanging in there," and this may be why sailors traditionally sing chanteys when pulling them up.

WharfSound made by Vang when he wishes to be fed.

WhelkSound made by Vang to show that he doesn't like that dry lumpy dog food you put in his dish.

WhipUseful accessory if that dry , lumpy dog food is all you happen to have on board

Whitecaps1. Agitated, foamy water on the tops of waves. 2. Luggage handlers at seaside hotels.

WinchesJocular term for complaint and helpful young ladies on a sailboat. By contrast, women who are serious sailors but dull company are called "windlasses" or " wet bulbs."

WindwardThe direction the wind is coming from, also known as the eye of the wind or teeth of the wind.

Wing-and-Wing or Double- WingA unique soft-shoe step perfected by the comedy tap dancing team of Flo and Eddy and first introduced in their 1933 hit, Mermaid in Heaven.

X XebecAlso, zebec. A small, three-mastered Mediterranean sailing vessel, used primarily in commerce in Middle East, and in Scrabble in North American waters.

Y YachtAny recreational craft whose owner or user is not responsible for her upkeep, or whose owner recognises sufficient tax benefits from his ownership to defray all operating expenses. Also commonly used to describe any boat prior to its purchase, and by many boat owners to describe their vessel to persons who have never seen it and never ikely to do so..

Yacht BrokerForm of coastal marine life found in many harbours. Generally thought to occupy a position on the evolutionary scale above algae, but below the cherrystone clam.

YardarmHorizontal spar mounted in such a way that when viewed from the cockpit, the sun is always over it.

YawlSouthern version of ahoy

Z ZoeThe Dutch have made significant contibutions to boating safety in their tiny country by draining coastal areas long favoured by Netherlands yachtsmen and converting them to farmland. The fleets of the little mudtfrigjates scudding through the fields of ripening turnips and brussel sprouts are a peculiar but colourful sight, and although some complain that the swish of plant tops along the hull and squelch of rubber tires in the mud are no substitute for the slap of waves and tang of salt, there is no denying that the unfortunate sailor who capsizes is better off in Davy Jone's larder than in his locker!.

ZenithOne of the number of odd and probably meaningless terms used by adherents of Celestial Navigation, a perculiar cult whose members profess to believe that it is possible to tell where you are by consulting mystical "tables" and peering at the stars and planets through an instrument that looks like something abandoned by the dental profession around the turn of the centry. Though rarely dangerous, celestial navigators - or "starries" as they are sometimes called- are avid proselytizers, and sailors who don't want to be pressed to join in their odd rituals are advised to give them a wide berth at twilight when they gather on deck and mumble numbers at one another.

ZephyrWarm, pleasant breeze. Named after the mythical Greek god of wishful thinking, false hopes, and unreliable forcasts.

Manly Dragons

Manly Dragon Boat Club is a community based, not for profit sporting organisation. Just like so many other sports clubs we don’t make money from major events. We don’t have a State of Origin, or billion dollar TV rights deals. The only way we get money to buy equipment is to raise it ourselves, or through the kind sponsorship of our partners, like Raine & Horne Wynnum/Manly. Or, we can also receive grant funding through various sources.

In the past we have received a number of grants from the Queensland Government Gambling Fund and some others. Those have helped us to purchase the large amount of equipment that we have today.

This year we decided to be a little different. There are many grants available from many government and corporate bodies. Some are targeted to a special use, depending on the organisation providing the grant. We chose to pursue a grant from Medibank this time. Medibank Community Grants are intended to promote healthy living in the youth age groups. Not just children but young adults. So our campaign to win funding was based on a Manly Dragons Junior crew. It was intended to attract young people to the sport and have a go. You know what – we won it!

Our application was for a wide range of equipment and expenses related to younger people. We received a new 20 seat boat, and a 6x4 marquee. We will buy 40 new paddles, plus 40 sets of junior equipment

in a personal back pack. Items like gloves, a hat, race shirt, training shirt, water bottle, etc. All of these items for the junior members to keep. We not only purchased equipment, but an amount of funding to subsidise the cost of their membership. Our aim is to make it more attractive for young people to come and have a try. Get them off the couch and onto the water. Encouraging more active kids is the aim of the Medibank Community Grant.

Now that we have these things it is time to find the kids. We will be running a range of promotional activities around local areas. In schools and other places of interest. We will focus some effort on junior recruitment and use the grant funding to better motivate some kids. All we want to see is a little effort from them to be more active.

Many thanks to Medibank for the incredible support. Also thanks to anyone who voted for our project during the selection stage. Every vote helped us achieve this incredible outcome.

If you would like to know more, or maybe you have a child or grandchild that might like to come down, please contact the Yacht club office or the Manly Dragon Boat club directly. Email [email protected] or call 0421750443.

Stay safe in 2016 and see you on the water.
