    1. REFINERY Acceptance Samples

    a. Sample - one quart b. Point of Acceptance - supplier obtains acceptance samples for

each conveyance at the time of loading.

    1. Cutback Asphalt samples arrive with tanker at job site

Note: If no sample, obtain a field check sample (see below) and add the note AIn Lieu of Refinery Sample@ to the Remarks on the Form T-121.

    2. Emulsified Asphalt samples go directly from the supplier to

the WYDOT Materials Program Asphalt Laboratory.

    c. Frequency - one sample per conveyance (tanker or tanker/pup) per type/grade

    d. Identification 1. Identify cutback asphalt samples using designation from

Form T-128 (CSR-CBA) and number them in the order they are obtained. Example: CSR-CBA #1, CSR-CBA #2, CSR-CBA #3, etc.

    2. Identify emulsified asphalt samples using Bill of Lading (BOL) or manifest numbers.

Note: DO NOT use AControl Number@ from the BOL 3. Include required documentation(s) with each sample.

    e. Other - record receipt, payment, etc., information on the

appropriate form(s) as described in the WYDOT Construction Manual (i.e., E-223 and E-224, respectively).

    2. FIELD Check Samples

    a. Sample - one quart b. Point of Acceptance - obtain sample from sampling valve on

tanker/pup or plant storage tank. Before taking sample, draw and discard at least 1 gallon of material from the sampling valve.

    c. Frequency - one sample per 200 tons d. Identification

    1. Identify cutback asphalt samples using designation from Form T-128 (FCS-CBA) and number them in the order they are obtained. Example: FCS-CBA #1, FCS-CBA #2, FCS-CBA #3, etc. 2. Identify emulsified asphalt samples using designation from

Form T-128 (FCS-EA) and number them in the order they are obtained. Example: FCS-EA #1, FCS-EA #2, FCS-EA #3, etc.

    3. Include required documentation (see page 1 of this section) with each sample.

    4. Submit sample to the WYDOT Materials Program Asphalt Laboratory.

    e. Other - record receipt, payment, etc., information on appropriate

form(s) as described in the WYDOT Construction Manual (i.e., E- 223 and E-224, respectively).

    PERFORMANCE GRADED ASPHALT BINDERS (PGAB)

    ***IMPORTANT***

Also include required documentation noted on page one of this section for all tankers NOT SAMPLED.

    1. FIELD Acceptance Samples - DO NOT accept samples from truck drivers

of Performance Graded Asphalt Binders (PGAB).

    a. Sample - two quarts b. Point of Acceptance - at the plant site, the contractor will obtain

the sample(s) from the sampling valve on the asphalt supply line between the storage tank and mixer. Before taking the sample(s), draw and discard at least 1 gallon of PGAB from the sampling valve. Sample ONLY when the hot mix plant is in operation.

    c. Submit sample to the WYDOT Materials Program Asphalt Laboratory.

    ***IMPORTANT***

The WYDOT inspector will observe sampling. If anything is questionable, the WYDOT inspector will record it in the field diary.

    c. Frequency - one sample per 100 tons. This represents one sublot

    for one lot.

Note: NO SAMPLE REQUIRED if project quantity is less than 100 tons (submit certifications)

    d. Identification

    1. Identify performance graded asphalt binder samples using designation from Form T-128 (Q-PGAB) and number them in the order they are obtained. Example: Q-PGAB #1, Q-PGAB #2, Q-PGAB #3, etc.

    2. Mark both sample cans with the Lot and Sublot numbers and securely tape them together. Example: Lot 1- Sublot 2 is L1-SL2, etc. 3. Include required documentation (see page 1 of this section)

with each sample and comments, if any, about sampling. Only one set of documentation is required for each pair of cans. Maintain proper chain-of-custody (i.e., the correct pair of cans with the correct documentation) prior to shipment to the WYDOT Materials Program Asphalt Laboratory.

    e. Other - record receipt, payment, etc., information on appropriate

form(s) as described in the WYDOT Construction Manual (i.e., E-221).

Note: Wait until each lot is complete before submitting samples

and documentation to the WYDOT Materials Program Asphalt Laboratory. A >standard= lot equals 5 sublots, but may vary from three to seven sublots depending on circumstances. If an >incomplete= lot exists at the end of paving season and project continues the following year, submit the lot >as is= for testing - do not wait until the next season to complete it.
