Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the Board of the Euro-pean Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE), please allow me to introduce our multiple short course programme ‘Education Days Buenos Aires 2015’, which will take place on 4-8 May 2015 in Buenos Aires, Argen-
tina. Education Days have generally been organized in Europe and Russia and EAGE is proud of bringing this learning event to ‘La Reina del Plata’ again and organize it in collaboration with the AAGGP.
I am delighted to see that the EAGE Education Days is taking place for the second time in Latin America contributing to our theme ‘Making a Difference on a Global Scale – Narrowing the Gap’ between professional developments across the regions.
The event consists in a one-day and 2 two-day short courses delivered by distinguished geoscientists and professionals. The courses are carefully selected to ensure a consistent pro-gramme with appeal to a broad geoscience and engineering audience. Please visit the Learning Geoscience Education Por-tal to learn more about the programme.
Education Days is an ideal platform to increase knowledge and awareness of new methodologies for geoscience specialists. These short courses do not only reflect the latest scientific de-velopments in geosciences but also demonstrate applications of these theories to real-life problems.

Jornadas Educativas Buenos Aires 2015
Estimados colegas,
En representación de la Asociación Argentina de Geólogos y Geofísicos Petroleros (AAGGP), es una gran sat-isfacción coorganizar con la EAGE estas jornadas por segunda vez en Argentina. La primera, realizada en
mayo de 2014, contó con la participación de 62 colegas y fue todo un éxito. Es de destacar que, entre los participantes, hubo 3 estudiantes de las universidades nacionales de Tucumán y de La Plata que fueron becados por la AAGGP.
En esta ocasión, el programa contempla tres cursos cortos a ser dictados por muy destacados profesionales, dos de ellos en con foco en temas de sísmica (anisotropía aplicada y atributos sísmicos en relación con flujos de interpretación) mientras el tercero se relaciona con aspectos y modelado geomecánico de rocas tipo “shale”.
Mediante la coorganización de la segunda edición de estas jor-nadas, la AAGGP reafirma sus vínculos con la EAGE y acerca nuevamente a sus afiliados, estudiantes, docentes y profesion-ales de Argentina y Latinoamérica una muy interesante pro-puesta educativa.

Monday 4 & Tuesday 5 MayUnderstanding Seismic Anisotropy in Exploration and Exploitation: Hands OnDr Leon Thomsen (Delta Geophysics)CPD Points: 10
This course covers all areas of applied seismic anisotropy, with class exercises and ample time for full discussion. Because anisotropy is such a fundamental concept, it covers topics in seismic acquisition, processing, imaging and interpretation, all based on seismic rock physics. This is not a ‘methods course’ but rather a ‘concept course’.
Participants’ profileGeophysicists should attend who have a working knowledge of conventional exploration geophysics and wonder how it can be that we use isotropic concepts to acquire and analyze data that come from rocks that, after only brief thoughtful consid-eration, must clearly be anisotropic. The course is particularly important in this era of unconventional resource plays.
Wednesday 6 & Thursday 7 MayShale Gas GeomechanicsDr Hamed Soroush (Petrolern Ltd)CPD Points: 10
This is an interactive course presented in two modules: ‘Geo-mechanical Modeling’ and ‘Geomechanics Applications for Shale Gas’. In the first part, the importance of geomechanics in the development of shale gas resources will be discussed. Con-structing 1D to 4D geomechanical models using geology and drilling information, well logs and core data from off-set wells is the major part of this section of the course. How to calibrate the model with regional stress and rock strength data will also be discussed.The second part includes different applications of geomechan-ics related to shale plays. Mechanical and chemical wellbore instabilities, hydraulic fracturing design and optimization, maximizing production from natural fractures, compaction and subsidence, casing collapse and multi-lateral junctions are applications that will be covered in this module. The differ-ences between geomechanical analysis in conventional and unconventional reservoirs will be explained and special atten-tion will be paid to rock anisotropy.

Este curso cubre todas las áreas de la anisotropía sísmica apli-cada, con ejercicios en clase y tiempo suficiente para amplias discusiones. Debido a que la anisotropía es un concepto tan fundamental, el curso abarca temas sobre adquisición sísmica, procesamiento, tratamiento de imágenes y su interpretación, todo ello basado en física sísmica. No se trata por tanto de un ‘curso de métodos’ sino de un ‘curso de conceptos’.
Perfil de los participantesLos geofísicos interesados deben contar con un conocimiento práctico sobre geofísica de exploración convencional y tener curiosidad sobre por qué utilizamos conceptos isotrópicos para adquirir y analizar datos provenientes de rocas que, después de sólo una breve y meticulosa consideración, deben estar claramente en estado anisotrópico. El curso es especialmente importante en esta época de yacimientos no convencionales.

Este curso interactivo se presenta en dos módulos: ‘Modelado Geomecánico’ y ‘Aplicaciones Geomecánicas con Gases de Es-quistos’. En la primera parte se discutirá la importancia de la geomecánica en el desarrollo de recursos a partir de gases de esquistos. La construcción de modelos geomecánicos 1D - 4D utilizando información geológica y sobre perforación, regis-tros de pozos y datos básicos sobre pozos off-set conformará la parte principal de esta sección del curso. También se discutirá cómo calibrar el modelo usando datos locales de esfuerzo y resistencia de la roca.La segunda parte incluye diferentes aplicaciones de la ge-omecánica relacionadas con yacimientos de esquistos. Las inestabilidades mecánicas y químicas en pozos, el diseño y la optimización del fracturamiento hidráulico, maximizando la producción a partir de fracturas naturales, la compactación y la subsidencia, el colapso de cámaras y uniones multilaterales son aplicaciones que se tratarán en este módulo. Las diferen-cias entre el análisis geomecánico en yacimientos convencion-ales y no convencionales se explicarán también, prestándole especial atención a anisotropía en cada roca.

Friday 8 MaySeismic Attributes and their Applications in Seismic InterpretationDr Behzad Alaei (Rocksource ASA)CPD Points: 5
Seismic attributes have been increasingly used in both explora-tion and reservoir characterization and have been integrated into the seismic interpretation process. Seismic attributes will be introduced with their applications in seismic interpretation using examples from different sedimentary basins and also through certain attribute analysis workflows. It is aimed to provide geoscientists with the minimum required knowledge of how each attribute is generated with a greater emphasis on the applications in exploration and reservoir characterization. Elementary trace-based attributes, dip-azimuth, coherence, fault attributes and frequency decomposition will be present-ed individually as well as in different workflows to identify and extract certain geological objects.
Participants’ profileThe course is aimed at geoscientists involved in exploration and production projects where seismics play a role and who wish to learn:• the basic theory of main seismic attributes used in explora-
tion and production• the applications and how to integrate them in exploration
and reservoir characterization studies.

Los atributos sísmicos se han utilizado cada vez más tanto en la exploración, como en la caracterización de yacimientos y se han integrado en los procesos de interpretación sísmica. Se mostrarán los tributos sísmicos con sus aplicaciones en la in-terpretación sísmica utilizando ejemplos de diferentes cuencas sedimentarias y también mediante flujos de trabajo de análisis de atributos. Esta sección tiene como objetivo proporcionar a los geocientíficos el conocimiento mínimo necesario sobre cómo se genera cada atributo con un mayor énfasis en apli-caciones de exploración y caracterización de yacimientos. Los atributos basados en trazado primario, sistema dip-azimut, co-herencia, atributos de fallo y descomposición de frecuencias serán presentados de forma individual, así como en diferentes flujos de trabajo para identificar y extraer determinados obje-tos geológicos.
