stating number of hours that simulation can replace clinical experience in curriculum

BUT… no evidence yet exists to support it!

Study Goals

• Evaluate the learning occurring with varying amounts of simulation substituting for clinical hours

• Evaluate new graduates ability to translate nursing knowledge and skills into the workplace

• Highlight best practices in simulation use • Establish a recommended simulation

curriculum

• 10 schools those chosen announced November 2010

• 1,000 students

• Study begins August 2011

• Random assignment10%, 25%, 50% simulation substituted for clinical

• Follow up – one year after graduation

NLN’s Simulation Initiative

Explore the use of simulation for high stakes assessment in

nursing education

Phase I

• Convene Think Tank - June 8-10, 2010

• Review existing high stakes assessments using simulation in nursing and other disciplines

• Review program outcomes from schools of nursing throughout the country and identify those that lend themselves to assessment via simulation

Phase II

• Jeffries team develops and pilots simulations

• Oermann/Kardong-Edgren team – Evaluates existing tools, creates new tools– Obtains inter-rater reliability– Develops evaluator training
