This presentation has been created for my class of twenty-two, grade four students. The topic is our Fish Friends Atlantic Salmon Project. The purpose of this presentation is to assess the student’s understanding of the life cycle of the Atlantic Salmon, of its general characteristics and of how to be steward for this species. Students will access this self guided presentation themselves on the classroom pod of computers from a given link within our class wikispace (http://fish-friends-interaction.wikispaces.com/). It is expected that the students will complete one of the activities from the presentation in approximately ten minutes. This assessment will be only one small component of the Fish Friends project.

This grade four project begins long before the salmon eggs are delivered as students are taught about what an ecological footprint is and what we can personally do to reduce our own footprint. The students are led to see that our Fish Friends Project is one way to do this and as a result the students create the appropriate habitat for the salmon eggs. The class will be supported to learn that a habitat is a home which provides the basic needs for living things. Students are also exposed to a salmon’s life cycle and to finding out what conditions must exist for the eggs to survive. The aquarium is set up and students discover how to regulate the temperature in the tank so that it is most like the temperature in a salmon’s natural environment when the eggs arrive. Over the course of the project, the children gain knowledge about such concepts as: what makes up a habitat; how a change in habitat affects plants and animals; how people change habitats; how people can preserve a habitat; and how all of their hard work helps to reduce their ecological footprint. Specific to the Atlantic salmon, students learn about the water cycle, the importance of reducing our use of water and other natural resources in order to protect this species and about catch and release fishing habits. Students are responsible for measuring water temperature and egg then fish growth. Most importantly of all, students learn stewardship to help them make informed decisions about their environment and to help them teach others to be more Earth friendly.

On the next two slides, there are two different Fish Friends interactions. Students will complete interaction one at the beginning of our project. Following the quiz, each student will reflect in his or her new Fish Friends journal how he or she did answering the questions. Students will return to this quiz again at the end of the project.

Interaction Two will be used as an assessment at the end of the unit. Students will be permitted to use their Fish Friends Journal to assist in playing the game. At the end of the interaction, each student will record his or her score and the amount of time it took to complete the interaction in the Fish Friends journal.
