Objectives

• Demonstrate how in a very short time IMS has moved from a standard/theory to actual applications

• Update on trials, applications, where IMS fits with convergence, key learnings

• Key Finding in various markets Japanese priorities vs North America vs European Key learnings and pitfalls

Trial Observations

• Japan is ahead of all other markets

• Europe is ahead of N. America

• CALA just starting to get up to speed on IMS

Trial Observations

• We are in multiple trials and some deployments

– 12 trials, 5 deployments– MRFC and MRFP function and multiple applications have been IMS

certified– Trials have validated our roadmap on Applications UM, Conferencing

moving to Video– No killer application; seamless user experience across networks, access

and services promises convenience, and carrier savings– QOS and Security becoming the major operational issues

• Softswitch vendors are still the anchor component

– Integration and Interop issues are slowing deployments

Learnings from Trials and Deployments

• Here are the milestones met in the trials:– Key applications including Voice Mail, Unified Messaging,

Conferencing, Privacy Screening, Find Me Follow Me in addition to our Mereon 6000 Media Server have been IMS certified by the trial carriers

– In 2006, it has moved from trial to deployment with 5 Tier One carriers

– These trials started in 2005, giving added momentum to our already ambitious IMS plans

– Video, Security, Resiliency have proven to be critical for success in these trials

Challenges to IMS deployment

• HSS deployments• Consolidation of the major players• New models in rapid application deployment

– Web based applications– Microsoft enterprise ambitions

• FMC – with WiFi/WiMax• Inertia
