- sharing online video for education
DESCRIPTION
Openly accessible online video is a useful resource in supporting teaching, learning and research. However, due to the large and growing amount of video available on the Internet (60 hours uploaded every minute to YouTube alone) searching for and finding useful material is extremely difficult and is restraining the use of these resources. Although studies have demonstrated the importance of Communities of Practice to support the use of online video there are no examples of successful peer-produced interventions that link educators and learners use of this content with pedagogic practice. In October 2011 www.edmediashare.org was launched as a proof of concept knowledge sharing website by JISC Digital Media in the UK. The aim of this project is to study the demand for an online resource that can meet the needs of educators and learners searching for useful online video. Initial findings have shown that, following an encouraging early phase and a high number of visitors, few individuals have engaged with the site or shared the video they use and their practice. Studies show that altruism, identification, and reciprocity have a significant and positive effect on knowledge sharing and present opportunities for creating useful online resources. However the experience with edmediashare demonstrates that developing successful communities that encourage educators to freely share their knowledge is problematic. This presentation describes the development of edmediashare, explores factors influencing engagement with the site and examines potential future directions.TRANSCRIPT

What a great opportunity
to collaborate and produce
a really useful resource!
…more people need
to know about it! Ros Smith, eLearning Consultant, UK
Fantastic! Really pleased to see
that this isn't simply another place
to upload video (plenty of spaces
to do that already), but instead
to embed media already published
elsewhere. Chris Grant, Head of IT Services, Alton College, UK
