PHILOSOPHY AND POLITICS

Allah’s Warriors: The Global Islamic Militancy Movement

Join us for a mini-series on Islam where you will be introduced to the primary distinctions about historical divisions and move-ments within the Muslim religion, a brief introduction to the his-tory of Islam’s conquests after the death of Mohammad, and a syn-opsis of the radical militant side of

Islam A brief description of Koranic quotes will illustrate how militants, like members of Al-Qaeda and ISIS, find scriptural beliefs for their activities, such as the terror-ists’ attacks in Europe and the US We will have a Q&A after class Donald Sharpes Fri. 4/7/17-4/21/17 1:00-3:00pm $48 DVC Pleasant Hill Library, Room L-102A

Re-Imagining God in the 21st CenturyIn the late 19th century philoso-pher Friedrich Nietzsche famous-ly declared: God is dead! But what “God” was he really talking about? And how we may relate today to traditional conceptions of God that appear “outdated” in the age of modern science? We will explore fascinating new ap-

proaches and notions of the Divine that have emerged at the leading-edge of spirituality and consciousness research Come and join us on this insightful journey! Isabella PriceMon. 2/27/17-3/6/17 1:00-3:00pm $32JFK University 100 Ellinwood Way Pleasant Hill, (ask for room at front desk)

The Bible and Mass Media: A Strange MarriageBiblical stories, characters, and phrases have become part of the web of our everyday lives: “Honor thyself” commands an ad for Johnny Walker scotch; “Arrayed Like One of These” headlines a [non-religious] maga-zine article; a cartoon depicts Noah outside the Ark, checking in all the animals, and cautions a leering pair of lions,” It’s a manifest, guys, not a menu!” We’ll study familiar biblical passages, then view examples of me-dia which show how the author has used the passage to persuade, or chastise, or humor the reader on varied social issues, then discuss the effectiveness of each attempt Bruce ReevesMon. 4/17/17-5/1/17 10:00am-12:00pm $65JFK University 100 Ellinwood Way Pleasant Hill, (ask for room at front desk)

SCIENCE

Reconciling Science and Religion with Bill GarrettThe Paganism emergent in the 21st century is not what you might think The word “pagan” evokes multiple resonances— some colorful, some scary Historically, “pagan” was used mostly as a term of disparagement by traditional monotheistic religions: alternative phi-losophies and religions were lumped together under the designation paganus— beliefs found among unsophis-ticated rural dwellers with their “country ways,” beliefs that were scripted as both naive and tainted by a hint of savagery The tensions between science and religion are well-known: evolution or creationism?? As humans, we have a need for BOTH This class will elaborate the details of this turn in modern thinking, and speculate on why it is necessary, indeed inevitable Bill GarrettFri. 2/10/17-3/17/17 1:30-3:30pm $72DVC Pleasant Hill Library, Room L-102B Science, Technology & Social ChangeWe will examine the impact of scientific thought and tech-nological innovation on major cultures of the modern world You will learn to recognize the elements of the scientific method Dr Minichino will explain key concepts in science and technology and examine events in science that have changed cultural patterns & beliefs Camille MinichinoFri. 4/14/17 12:00-2:00pm $16JFK University 100 Ellinwood Way Pleasant Hill, (ask for room at front desk)

HISTORY

Ideas That Make HistoryIs the world of diverse ideas so complex that their de-velopment and understanding depend on the specialist? This course suggests otherwise Here, we examine the inception and development of ideas that range from myth to Marx and beyond Such an examination leads to a perspective in which all ideas are understandable because this perspective resonates with one’s own subjective history In other words, a journey through the narrative history of ideas can be a journey through our own personal history and such a journey can make the participant’s own experience accessible as a tool for both understanding and meaning Harry IzmirlianWed. 3/1/17-3/22/17 2:00-4:00pm $55 DVC Pleasant Hill Library, Room L-100

Mid-21st Century Culture: Social Class, Employment and Humanity with Bill GarrettWhat has been called the Fourth Industrial Revolution will drastically impact the nature of employment, of citizenship, and ultimately of humanity The class will consist of an elaboration and critical inquiry into a va-riety of predictions We are fast-approaching the socio-economic situation in which workers (at least human workers) will no longer be needed Many economists agree that the convergence of technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics has, in many commercial enterprises (industrial as well as non-executive admin-istrative) obviated the need the humans - at least from a business standpoint Different perspectives and view-points will be discussed Bill GarrettFri. 4/21/17-5/26/17 1:30-3:30pm $72DVC Pleasant Hill Library, Room L-102B The Renaissance with Joe AdlerJoe Adler will play his guitar and sing songs of the Renaissance Wearing a costume of the times and showing slides of events and personalities, history will come alive The Renaissance (rebirth) transformed a thousand years of the European Middle Ages into a changed Europe, as well as influencing societies worldwide From the scientific inquiry of Copernicus, Galileo and Rembrandt to Capitalism’s evolution out of Feudalism, which led to nation states, exploration and conquering of distant lands, resistance by the conquered, and kidnapping of Africans for slave-labor A religious revolution included a monk, Martin Luther, who initiated the rise of Protestantism, and a coura-geous teen-age woman, Joan of Arc, who defied reli-gious orthodoxy Joe AdlerTue. 3/7/17 1:00-3:00pm $10Rossmoor -1001 Golden Rain Road, Walnut Creek-Creekside Club Room

ROSSMOOR Walnut Creek

Enjoy a special evening where we try to recreate what it must have been like for a silent-movie era film-goer. A DVC film pro-fessor will provide a brief background behind how A Trip to the Moon came to be, along with those

who created it. Accompanied by a live pianist, the film will play in its entirety. Q&A with the film pro-fessor will proceed after the film’s showing.
