THE PROJECT MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE (PMI) The Project Management Institute (PMI) is a worldwide organisation of nearly 250,000 professionals.
PMI is a non-commercial organisation owned by the membership of PMI and is dedicated to
advancing the profession of Project Management.

The Auckland Branch
Holds a regular meeting on the third Thursday of each month at 5.30pm for a 6:00pm start. This
includes a one hour presentation on a Project Management topic. These are always interesting
and the project managers find that they learn a lot from these sessions.
Runs regular professional development and leadership courses. PMI members get a discount on
these courses.
Organises study groups for PMI members.
Provides a Mentoring program.

you are as membership gives you many benefits for the same overall costs.
JOINING THE PMI ONLINE Becoming a member of the PMI involves an on-line application form which is available from
https://secure.pmi.org/memberapp/code/join.asp.
Once You Become a Member • You are emailed your membership number. This allows you to log onto the PMI site.
• You are mailed a welcome pack which includes your certificate of membership and the
PMBOK Guide CD.
The PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) The prime PMI document and a key element of project management studies is the PMBOK Guide.
This is a comprehensive guide to project management that:
• Covers 9 Project Management Knowledge areas
• Covers 44 Project Management process
• Is 400 pages long
• CD comes with the membership pack
• Is the basis for PMI studies
This is provided to you in electronic form (PDF) when you join the PMI (it is sent to you in your
Welcome Pack on CD and is available as a download from the members’ page of the PMI website).
The electronic version is adequate for study although most people prefer to purchase a printed copy.
PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATIONS PMI currently offers three professional qualifications:
• The Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)
• The Project Management Professional (PMP)
• The Program Management Professional (PgMP)
The PMP qualifications have excellence acceptance in New Zealand while the newer CAPM
qualification is rapidly gaining good acceptance.

Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) • In late 2003 PMI began offering an additional certification called the Certified Associate in
Project Management (CAPM).
• The exam for the CAPM™ is easier than the PMP® exam, requires less experience to qualify
to take it, but covers the same topics as the PMP® exam. Pass Mark is currently 69%.
• All questions are “knowledge questions” which are taken directly from the PMBOK Guide.

Project Management Professional (PMP) • PMP has significant experience qualification requirements. The experience hours should be
in a PM leadership role.
• The exam for PMP is much harder than CAPM, but it covers the same topics as the CAPM
exam.
• Pass Mark is currently 62%
• Questions can be “interpretive” and cover general project management knowledge as well
as topics in the PMBOK Guide.

Program Management Professional (PgMP) • PgMP has significant experience qualification requirements as both a Project Manager and a
Program Manager.
• The certification has 3 evaluation processes, an initial Panel Review of your experience,
followed by a multi-choice examination and finally a Multi-rater assessment.

Which Qualification? Only complete the PMP qualification if you are an experienced project manager.
The CAPM qualification is the ideal qualification if you want to know more about project
management and is a perfect stepping stone to the PMP qualification.
You apply on line for both qualifications. The exams can be booked and taken online at an Auckland
exam centre (currently the exams can be booked for any Tuesday of the week).
Ongoing Qualifications The CAPM qualification, once gained, is held for five years. After five years you can either re-sit the
CAPM exam or go on and sit the PMP exam (if you qualify through experience).
On the other hand, in order to retain the PMP qualification, the holder must complete 60 PDUs
(Professional Development Units) every three years. This is the equivalent of 60 hours of PM
training.
Study Options • Study Groups – These are free to PMI members. These groups are organised by the local branch
and are mentored by experienced PMP qualified project managers
• Online study - US$200 - $US800, two examples are on www.pmi.org and www.pmstudy.com
• Self Study – books from the PMI Bookshop (discounts for PMI members) or from
www.amazon.com
• A professionally run ‘Crash’ course – The typical cost is US$2,750 and details of these courses
can be found on the Internet, using a Google search on “PMP Study”. The following are PMI

How do I become PMP or CAPM certified?
1. Join PMI as a member. Do this online from http://www.pmi.org. The welcome pack from
PMI will contain the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) Guide on a CD-ROM.
2. Decide on your method of study (see PMP and CAPM Study Notes.pdf). This could be by self-
study, through a formal course, on-line study, or with help from a PMI Auckland Branch
Study Group.
3. Read the PMBOK Guide and study, study, study. If you are doing this through a study group
it takes approximately 15 weeks to complete the study group process.
4. Once you are prepared for the exam, submit your examination application online from the
PMI website. PMI will advise you if your application has been accepted or not.
5. Once your application has been accepted, PMI will advise you how to schedule the exam. In
Auckland you can sit the exam at an online centre, at other locations, such as Wellington you
must sit the paper based version.
AUCKLAND STUDY GROUPS The Auckland Branch of PMINZ coordinates study groups to assist you in preparing for the PMP and
CAPM certification examinations. At this stage, the Auckland Branch does not provide any study
group support for those people who which to which to obtain the Program Management Professional
Certification (PgMP).
The objectives of the study groups are to:
1. Help to prepare you for the exams by guiding you through the knowledge areas of the
Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) guide;
2. Provide a support mechanism as you prepare for the exam;
3. Guide you through the exam process;
4. Provide answers to questions or concerns you have relating to the exam;
5. Provide networking opportunities with other people looking to obtain PMI certifications;
6. Enhance your Project Management skills and your knowledge of the PMBOK (you can attend
a study group without the need to sit an exam)
The study groups are self-driven groups which require a serious commitment to study. The
involvement of each person in the group encourages the sharing of experiences and mutual support
in preparing for the exam.
Study group sessions are held regularly in Auckland at a number of locations. PMPs facilitate each of
the sessions and each session includes the presentation of a knowledge area and the answering of
mock exam questions.
It is important to note that the study groups are not classroom style training sessions. The study
group facilitators are there to facilitate and provide guidance and assistance only.
What does the Study Group Cost? The Auckland Branch of PMINZ does not charge for you to attend a study group. However, you must
be a member of the PMI and have joined the New Zealand Chapter. Additionally you will need to
purchase study materials.
Study Materials Study group participants are responsible for purchasing their own study materials, books and
software (if they wish to use exam preparation software). The required study materials are as
follows and can all be purchased from Amazon.com or direct from the publishers.
1. “A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge, Third Edition (PMBOK Guide)”.
This is provided to you in electronic form (PDF) when you join the PMI (it is sent to you in
your Welcome Pack on CD and is available as a download from the members’ page of the
PMI website). The electronic version is adequate for study although most people prefer to
purchase a printed copy.
2. For CAPM participants, “CAPM® Exam Prep - Premier Edition” by Rita Mulcahy.
3. For PMP participants, “PMP® Exam Prep - 5th Edition” by Rita Mulcahy.
4. Optionally you may like to purchase “Project Management: A Systems Approach to Planning,
Scheduling, and Controlling (Ninth Edition)” by Harold Kerzner. This book is useful, but is not
required for the study groups.
Although not required, there are many exam simulators on the market which may help in your exam
preparation.
As a prospective PMP you sign up to a Code of Ethics and you must respect all laws including
those of copyright and NOT photocopy books and other copyrighted material. .
Study Time and commitment You need to be prepared to commit 5-10 hours per week for the duration of the study group to
prepare for each study group session followed by 10-15 hours per week for the weeks leading up to
the exam. Most people have found that they will commit 150+ hours preparing to sit the exam.
What is the format of a Study Group The proposed schedule for a study group in 2008 consists of an introductory session followed by 13
study group sessions covering each of the PMBOK chapters followed by 2 review sessions. The
outline is as follows, however each study group may tailor this schedule:

Each session covers a topic of the PMBOK and includes a presentation on the topic by one or more
members of the group, questions and answers, and mock exam questions which are discussed as a
group.
Each session typically runs for between 1-2 hours with the review sessions running for 3-4 hours.

The first study group for 2008 is expected to start late February.
