Overview

Integrated design analysis for casing and tubing configurations

Landmark’s WELLCAT™ software provides precise solutions for both wellbore analysis and integrated casing and tubingdesign. The software calculates accurate downhole temperature and pressure profiles which can be used for pipe-bodymovement and casing and tubing load analysis. WELLCAT software is the tool of choice for many companies operating inhigh-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) deepwater or heavy oil drilling and production environments.

The software integrates five modules into a common environment to provide more accurate and reliable solutions to complexdesign problems. Thermal effects are modeled for drilling and production operations. A comprehensive analysis of loads andstresses on casing and tubing is provided, including service life analysis. Detailed analysis of the entire casing system isprovided to understand the effects of annular pressure buildup and the interaction in the casing and tubing systems within awell. Loads and their resulting wellhead movement are evaluated to determine the integrity of the well tubulars.

WELLCAT software is a component of The Engineer's Desktop™ software suite of technologies, which enables integratedoperations reporting, drilling and completions engineering and well planning workflows. The Engineer's Desktop suite isintegrated on the Engineer's Data Model™ software platform.

Multistring Design ModuleThe Multistring Design module predicts pressure andvolume changes due to annular pressure buildup (APB)when the well system heats up as a result of productionoperations or the injection of hot fluids into the well.

The Multistring Design module determines the movementthat occurs to the wellhead during the life of the well.Movement is calculated due to strings being run andcemented, static loads being added or removed from thewell (nipple-up BOP, hang-off drillstring during a drive-offsituation) and pressure or thermally induced loads appliedto each individual string in the well. Analyses are linked toDrill, Prod, Tube and Casing.

The Multistring design module is useful for:

• Trapped annuli in subsea operations for determination oftubular burst and collapse loads due to APB

• Structural integrity of uncemented (unsupported)conductor/structural casing in platform operations dueto wellhead movement and load redistribution

• Wellhead movement analysis also includes; Point ofFixity, Lock- Ring Rating, Lift Off Analysis andProgressive Failure Analysis features

• A comprehensive well-soil interaction model forMultistring well stress analysis. This model predictswellhead movement and determines the integrity of the foundation.

VIT ModelingThe VIT (vacuum insulated tubing) enhancements addcritical technology to the WELLCAT modules aimedspecifically at solving vacuum insulated tubing (VIT)applications for deep water and heavy oil design problems. The deep water capabilities include temperature mitigation

enhancement (usingvacuum insulatedtubing) and well headmovement progressivefailure analysis. Theheavy oil capabilitiesare designed for hightemperature steaminjection scenarios.

The VIT option isused to model vacuuminsulated tubingwithin WELLCATapplication. VIT isused to mitigate therisks of annular

pressure buildup (APB), cold startups and heavy oilproduction when using the latest VIT systems.

Annular Pressure Buildup

• In deepwater, high-temperature and high annularpressure can cause casing strings to collapse and henceoperators use VIT to mitigate the risk. VIT temperaturemodeling using the Temp Mitigate module combinedwith the WELLCAT Multistring design module helpsmodel these possible scenarios.

Cold Startups

• In some subsea completions, a cold startup (initial flow)can be hampered or made impossible because oftemperature losses and hydrating near the seabedmudline. VIT minimizes this problem by maintainingwellbore temperatures to prevent hydrate formation. Themodeling of these temperature and pressure conditionsfor VIT can now be analyzed using the WELLCAT TempMitigate feature.

Heavy Oil Production

• In heavy oil production scenarios VIT helps maintainlower viscosity levels in steam flooding, "huff and puff "and steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) projects, reducing the need for artificial lift techniques andincreasing total ultimate recovery (reservoir draw down).

• Temperature and pressure modeling for vacuuminsulated tubing using the Temp Mitigate featurecombined with WELLCAT Steam injection modelingmodule is possible in heavy oil production scenarios.

Well head movement progressive failure analysis enables auser to obtain axial loads and contact forces of the entiresystem after the hanger rating is exceeded. WELLCAT willdistribute the loads through the system once the hangerrating are exceeded and only stop reporting once the ratingequal the loading condition.

VIT modeling is integrated withmultiple WELLCAT software capabilitiesincluding temperature simulation, stressand multistring AFE analysis.

The VIT and Progressive Failure Analysis features arelicensed separately to be used in conjunction with theProduction, Tube and Multistring design modules.

Steam ModelingThe WellCAT Steam modelling option is used to modelmultiple steam injection scenarios including injectionthrough tubing, injection down the tubing annulus andsimultaneous injection though both tubing and annulus.

The modeling handles super-heated steam or saturatedsteam with a given quality. The technology uses the rigorousPVT model for steam and water developed by the NationalInstitute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

Transient or steady-state calculations output steam qualityverses depth and fluid temperature and pressure versesdepth analysis. In addition the calculations output steamquality verses time at a specified depth to help determine thesteam breakthrough at the perforations.

Temperatures calculated for the wellbore or wellborecomponents can be used within WELLCAT for stressanalysis, annular pressure buildup analysis, and wellheadmovement calculations.

Detailed Results PresentationPresentation of calculation results on-screen allows user-configurable, multi-pane spreadsheet and plot formats withuser definition of custom and preconfigured display tabs.Presentation of print results is in both standard and user-configurable formats.
