SATURDAY, lUtlr l)ECJCILBk;H, 1055
In our notes in last Saturday's programme we said, " On the law of averages the tide must turn soon," and it so happened that even while those notes were being read our lads came along with the best performance of the season.
I Four good goals scored and some more missed, and all created by good football; that was the nett result of the game against Tranmere, but there is more to it than even the result, for several facts stand out from this game.
Perhaps first and foremost, the success of King a t centre forward, brought in two weeks ago in an emergency with the very satisfying performance of scoring three goals and seeing his team gain three points, and this after a run of six
i games without a win. Only the future will tell whether this is King's best position, but certainly so far the experi- ment has proved a n undoubted success.
The return of Ken Chaytor, who showed something of the form of last season, was a very welcome sign that still another of our youngsters is ready
1 for the senior team. Also the first home

appearance of Sammy Anderson must be regarded as very satisfactory indeed and, taken all round, the game showed the wisdom of the policy of giving youth its chancc.
On the not-so-pleasant side was the 5,000 gate. We are wondering where the remaining 10,000 spend their Satur- day afternoons. It has been said that the public will only follow a winning team and yet it cannot be said that onr home record is so bad.
We have been looking it up and here it is over the last season and a half: Played 33, won 18, drawn 9, lost 6, goals for 66, against 36. Comparing the record of Manchester United for instance, who now top the First Division : Played 31, won 20, drawn 6, lost 5, goals for 70, against 42. -
From these comparisons the winning team argument doesn't sound so good and we feel there must be something other than this that is keeping the customers away. We can understand a drop in attendance from First Division to Second, and a further drop in the Third Division, but i t is difficult to understand the huge drop from what our gates used to be and what they are now.
Today we give a welcome to Queens Park Rangers who have come up from the capital city to fill in what would otherwise have been a blank date.
The Rangers are a very old club, being founded in 1885, adopted professionalism in 1898, and joined the Southern League in 1899. Elected to the Football League South in 1920, they were runners-up in 1946-47 and gained promotion in 1947-48. The following season they finished 13th in the Second Division. They were relegated in 1951-52.
Paying their first-ever visit to Oldham we hope the match will give some idea of the relative strength of the two league sections, and that they will take back with them happy memories of Boundary Park.
