We want to hear from you!Share your news – about

career changes, weddings, travel and births – with fellow alums.

First-year students took part in their inaugural Emmanuel volunteer experience during the College’s 15th Annual Day of Service on September 7th. Nearly 430 students participated in the tradition, volunteering their time to Greater Boston area nonprofit organizations throughout the day for a total of 1,724 hours of service.

Students spent time among 10 different service sites, which included the Franklin Park Zoo, the Greater Boston Food Bank, Community Servings, Cradles to Crayons, Muddy River Clean-Up, Marian Manor, St. Ambrose Family Shelter, St. Mary of the Angels Parish in Roxbury, Mission Grammar School, and the newly added site of ReVision Urban Farm, a small garden in Boston that provides fresh, affordable, locally grown produce to families in the city

with limited incomes and transporta-tion access.

The Annual Day of Service introduced new students to some of the volunteer opportunities available to them at

Emmanuel and throughout Boston. The day also allowed for new students to get to know one another and bond with their new classmates through service.

“Serving the community is an important part of Emmanuel’s culture and tradition,” said Associate Director of Community Service and Service Learning Deirdre Bradley-Turner. “Inviting new students to take part in a service event during Welcome Week is a wonderful way to welcome students to Emmanuel. It is an opportunity for new students to get involved, meet other students and see and serve one of Boston’s many neighborhoods.”

In addition to the Day of Service, the College also held the annual Volunteer Fair on September 15th. The fair featured various organizations throughout the Greater Boston area. Students made connections with representatives from each organization and chose volunteer opportunities that proved the best fit for them.

Students Volunteer in and Around Boston During Annual Day of Service

2010-2011 Marks College’s Largest Undergraduate Enrollment in HistoryThis fall, Emmanuel welcomed the largest undergraduate enrollment in its 91-year history. Enrollment has more than tripled from 528 undergradu-ates in 2000 to 1,750 now currently enrolled for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Since the College became a coeduca-tional four-year college in the fall of 2001, applications have risen dramati-cally as have our academic standards, making Emmanuel a school of first choice for an increasing number of high school graduates.

Emmanuel Squad Performs Well at Boston Area Model UN Conference

ReVision Urban Farm was a new service site for the Annual Day of Service this year.

Student volunteers assist students and their families during Move-in Weekend.

Emmanuel College’s Model UN team had a great showing at the Boston Area Model UN (BarMUN) Conference during the weekend of September 30th-October 3rd, hosted by Boston University’s International Affairs Association. Three students won awards at the conclusion of the weekend-long conference; Jason Young ’12, Adam Campbell ’13 and Alec Simonette ’14. Along with winning Honorable Delegate for New France, Simonette also won the Lufthansa raffle, which includes a free trip to anywhere in Europe.

The BarMUN Conference is a collegiate conference hosted each October by Boston University’s International Affairs Association. It

is a multi-disciplined, fast paced, and interactive simulation involving over 200 collegiate delegates and 100 staff members.

“[It] is a great starting event for the members of the club, especially new members because of the smaller committee sizes, which allow more participation and hands-on experience in resolutions,” said Young. Additional Emmanuel participants included: Andrew Moyseowicz ’11, Micha Maalouf ’11, Nora Cashell ’14, Angela Anthony ’14, Andrew Young ’13, Jack Davidson ’14, Tim O’Sullivan ’14, Cesar Zayas ’14 and Chris Fitzpatrick ’13.

Emmanuel College Special Instructor of Art Emily Parsons, students Brittany Jordan ’11, Christine Aufiero ’11, Michaela Alexander ’11, and alumna Jennifer Walsh ’08 volunteered at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston’s (MFA) special event “Artist for a Day” on August 28th in an effort to reach out to families of U.S. armed forces service members.

The event was in conjunction with the MFA’s Artful Adventures Program, which provides opportunities for children ages three and older to connect with art and culture through engagement with the museum’s collections, combining gallery exploration with an art-making activity. As part of the art activity, the Emmanuel volunteers guided children through the creative process, using the art lesson as a means of teaching participants how to communicate ideas and emotions through art. Children were provided sketchbooks to take

home to continue to develop their sense of self-expression.

More and more, art therapy is being recognized as an effective approach to helping military members and their families overcome psychological and emotional challenges. The form of expressive therapy is not simply cathartic, but aids in improving or maintaining mental health, fostering self-expression, enhancing coping skills and managing stress. “Making art is relaxing and enjoyable, which in itself is therapeutic,” said Parsons, who herself has loved ones in the service. “This was a fun, low-key day for these families. Always having that feeling of uncertainty hanging over their heads makes it even more important for these families to have an outlet for expression and have an opportunity to enjoy some time together.”

Mary Lou Maney Cahalane had happy news to report. In celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary, Mary Lou, her husband Bill, their three children, son-in-law and two grandchildren took a family trip to Ireland in July. They spent a week in Cobh Co., Cork, where Mary Lou’s nine first cousins and their families hosted an anniversary gathering. They then stayed a week on Bere Island in Bantry Bay where her mother and her father’s mother were born. They visited two first cousins and many other relatives in Ireland. With her strong interest in genealogy, Mary Lou was pleased to spend time at the newly opened Bere Island Heritage Centre and worked on family genealogy.

Congratulations to the Cahalanes. I am sure there are many more anniversaries being celebrated among our classmates. Let us know about these events!

It is with sadness that we report that our fellow Emmanuel classmate, Mary Sapienza, died peacefully on August 27, 2010, at Massachusetts General Hospital after suffering an unexpected brain aneurysm. She will be missed. Mary and Cindy Jobin, her lifelong friend and partner of 43 years, consistently stayed in touch with Emmanuel classmates Ellen Lawler Ugi and Eileen Mawn. They affectionately called themselves “The Four Seasons” because each of them had a birthday in a different season of the year, and they would faithfully get together to celebrate their birthdays.

Congratulations to Charlotte Smith, who received the highly respected Cheverus Award from Cardinal O’Malley at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross on November 22, 2009. The award, with its medal that bears the image of Bishop Cheverus, was established in 2008. Charlotte was one of 133 recipients who received the medal on the feast of Christ the King. The Pilot described the recipients as “those who quietly and humbly build Christ’s kingdom in this world” (11/27/09 issue). Charlotte has been a Eucharistic Minister for many years, and currently makes 10 plus communion calls weekly to private homes, and monthly to three nursing homes. She has been active in her parish as a member of the Legion of Mary, as a supporter of its monthly drawing, and as a money counter. Charlotte has also participated in pro-life efforts. Most notably, she has been in charge of the sale of carnations at her parish on Mothers’ Day weekend for 23 years. This event benefits Framingham Birthright. In addition to her Church-related commitments, Charlotte helps ensure that the Council on Aging newsletters

Daniel Robert Helkey, Class of 2013, son of Martha Murawski Helkey ’82 and Roger Helkey of Santa Barbara, Calif., has returned to Emmanuel as a sophomore majoring in biostatistics. Daniel, an Eagle Scout, is excited about attending Emmanuel, living in Boston down the road from Fenway Park, and being involved in intramural sports, especially ultimate frisbee. Daniel has three brothers, Christopher and Benjamin who are attending Bishop Garcia Diego High School in Santa Barbara and Matthew who is homeschooled.

By day, Barbara Curtin Graceffa creates web pages for UMass Boston’s McCormack Graduate School of Policy Studies. After hours, she uses her design talents in other ways -- she owns and operates a part-time interior decorating business, “Secretary of the Interior.” Her latest client is the Boston Marathon. The Boston Athletic Association (BAA), the folks who put on the Boston Marathon, has commissioned Barbara to make two commemorative quilts celebrating their sister marathon in Ohme, Japan.

In 1966, when Japanese-U.S. relations were

still strained following WWII, an English-speaking Japanese reporter reached out to the organizers of the Boston Marathon offering to sponsor two U.S. athletes to travel to Japan to run in the Ohme race. Not only did the BAA accept their offer but they also agreed to sponsor two Japanese marathoners in Boston. Forty-four years later, the reciprocal relationship continues; a delegation of Japanese reporters and officials from the Ohme race were in Boston again in April 2010 to cheer on their runners in the Boston Marathon and a representative from each group was given a quilt designed and sewed by Barbara.

The quilts incorporate sport shorts, T-shirts, silk marathon ties and embroidered patches from both races as well as Japanese fabrics from table linens, handkerchiefs, and batiks previously gifted to members of the board of directors of the Boston Athletic Association. Each patchwork wall-hanging is approximately 36x72 inches in size.

Barbara has won blue ribbons for her quilts in the past and is honored to be associated with this international gift of goodwill. The quilts were presented to the Japanese during a private ceremony during marathon weekend in April. It is expected that at least one of the quilts will hang in the City Hall in Ohme.

Grace Siegel DeGregorio would love to hear from all of her friends from her Emmanuel days! For almost 33 years Grace has lived in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her husband Edmonde is a lawyer, their son Anthony (21) is a junior music major and son Joe (almost 20) is a sophomore communications major. Both sons are currently at the University of Dayton. For the past 13 years, Grace has been an editor/writer for Living Magazines, a monthly, community-based publication. She works from home which is fabulous for her! She and her husband do a lot of volunteer work at their church, their sons’ former high school (St. Xavier), and for a peer support group “Reach Out to Grieving Parents.” As a family, they love to travel to their timeshare condo in Longboat Key, Fla., every summer. Grace says, “We are blessed.”

More than 50 members of the Class of 1975 attended events during Reunion Weekend 2010, with many classmates staying overnight in Julie Hall. Highlights included a Friday night concert on campus, the anniversary Mass for Sr. Janet Eisner’s 30 years as president and our class dinner on Saturday evening. I enjoyed catching up with old friends and pass on some of the details gathered.

The award for greatest distance travelled goes to Maura Hagan, who came from Boulder, Colo., Maureen Kelly, who traveled from San Francisco, Calif., and Pat McCarthy, who lives in Virginia. Maura writes: “It was great to be back in Boston and reconnect with the wonderful women that graduated with us.” Maura works as deputy director of the National Center for Atmospheric Research and also reports that her daughter, Taylor Forbes, graduated from Emmanuel with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2004.

Lucy Flynn, who attended a Saturday afternoon reception with her husband George O’Toole, is vice-president of global marketing at Raytheon.

Joan Kenney, who works at Cape Cod Hospital reports “absolutely loving living fulltime on Cape Cod,” where she is developing a new passion in artistic painting.

Kathleen Creegan Damaskos, Maureen Farrell and Sheila Gilligan, were joined by Gwen Oesterle Thakur, who ran in the 5K road race during the weekend and was also a reunion committee member.

Ann Marie Martineau writes: “I think the Class of 75 is aging gracefully; I dare say we’re almost mature!” Ann Marie, a social worker, is clinical director in the Inpatient Psychiatric Unit at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton, Mass., and says she is enjoying raising her 13-year-old daughter whom she adopted from the Ukraine.

Karen Hume Baptiste shared photos of her gorgeous new granddaughter Isla Jane, and enjoyed the weekend with classmates Karen Cooney Burke, Celeste Vezina, Susanne DiLiddo Campagna (whose son Daniel ’07, performed at reunion with his a cappella singing group Fermata Town), Anna Mantgiaris Rapp, Cheryl Bumpus Daily, Ronalee Keenan Crocker, Martha Gavrey LoPorto, Susan Lantagne Schranz, Maureen McLelland Lovejoy, Denise Cynkus Leslie, Gail McCarthy Graziano and Marie Campagna Franklin. I was happy to share with classmates my recent career change after 24 years on staff of The Boston Globe. I am now enjoying a new venture as a full-time professor of communication at Lasell College in Newton, Mass.

Gwyn Oesterle Thakur, who did a great deal to help with reunion planning and outreach, recently launched a new website, www.conventioncenterplace.com. Whether you are an exhibitor, attendee or business traveler Gwyn advertises that this website will help you with your booth and travel planning. Check it out. Gwyn’s daughter,

We pray for the following alumni who passed away or were remembered at a Memorial Mass in the Emmanuel College Chapel from July 2009-September 2010.

Emmanuel College Campus Safety Officer Andrews “Andy” Kyere is preparing for what will be his fourth military tour. He will officially leave for Iraq in January, but is now involved in specialized training for his next deployment. Kyere has been with the United States Army Reserves for the past 11 years as a combat lifesaver. He also serves as a non-commissioned officer in the Patient Administration department.

“Growing up, I always wanted to be an officer and a gentleman,” said Kyere about joining the U.S. Army. “I have cousins that are in the military and I asked them about their experiences. After I talked to them and thought about it more, I knew that joining the military was something that I wanted to do.”

Kyere previously served tours in Bosnia, Kosovo and most recently

Iraq. While serving in Iraq, he was honored for his service with a Bronze Star medal, one of the highest military awards that a U.S. military soldier can receive. This award is based on indi-vidual actions during a soldier’s tour. “I don’t care about the awards. I just care about saving lives,” said

Sister Janet Eisner, SND informed the audience about the history of convocations, which serve to remind colleges of their missions at the start of the academic year. She said that Emmanuel has stayed true to its mission “to educate students in a dynamic learning community rooted in the liberal arts and sciences and shaped by strong ethical values and a Catholic intellectual tradition,” since the earliest years of the College. Sister Janet continued by recogniz-ing the Emmanuel students, class by class. She encouraged members of the senior class to continue making Boston their extended classroom, juniors to continue experiencing the real world through internships, study abroad and community service, the sophomore class representatives to remain focused as they declare their allegiance to a particular area of study, and the fresh-men to begin to make an imprint on Emmanuel. “When you first came to Emmanuel

in 2007 you planned to make Boston your extended classroom,” Sister Janet said to the senior class. “You still have your senior year to fulfill those plans. Have you been to the Museum of Fine Arts lately? The Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum? The Boston Symphony? This year may you appreciate even more the Emmanuel education with a program that builds both character and career.” Murphy began her remarks by reminiscing of the days when she was “just a little girl with big ideas” in her college years. Those big ideas were what led her on the road to her career as a filmmaker. Murphy explained that prior to becoming a filmmaker she worked as a journalist and was often upset by how much information she was forced to leave out of each story. She began her own production company where she could make documentaries to tell the stories of people around the world.

“Almost every unnerving thing that could possibly happen to you when

traveling has happened to me, but taking the rough road has truly been a small price to pay to get to meet the people I met along the way,” Murphy said of her travels while shooting documentaries. “People who want to make life easier for others who have drawn the ‘proverbial short straw’ in life.” Murphy explained that success in life and following your dreams is all about taking small steps toward what we believe. She referenced the summer reading selection, Three Cups of Tea, acknowledging one man’s ability to make a huge difference.

“Never underestimate how much you continue to not know,” she said. “While we all still have so much to learn, we also have so much to do. If you want to make a difference today, you already have the power to do that.”

Murphy told the story of the two women featured in her documentary “Beyond Belief.” She explained that

the hardships of being a widow in Afghanistan are unimaginably worse than that of being a widow in the United States, which is why the two women who lost their husbands in the attacks on September 11th created a foundation to help. The foundation gives Afghan widows the basic tools needed to achieve a measure of independence and care for themselves and their children.

She closed her remarks by reminding students to take advantage of the opportunity they have at their finger-tips to get a great college education. Murphy emphasized that the education the students have and will continue to receive at Emmanuel is something that other people in the world only dream of, especially those Afghan widows fighting for an education for their own children.

“Despite their differences,” Murphy said of the Afghan widows, “we all have the same basis for our big ideas; security, health, happiness and education.”
