WWES NEWS Dr. Williams—Principal Mrs. Parisi—Assistant Principal Mr. Sawa—School Counselor December 21, 2017 We've had a fun and busy week, and that's before the Sing-along and classroom parties! This is one of those weeks that are special in an elementary school-- we've had a Grinch day, we've had staff and students dressed as elves, and we had our annual staff Ugly Sweater contest. Our Student Lighthouse Team organized a Marketplace event this week to sell items to raise money for charity. We received a donation of nine boxes of children's books from Suzanne Degley at Barnes and Noble, books that will be given away to our students. We've had a fun and busy week, and that's before the Sing-along and classroom parties! This is one of those weeks that are special in an elementary school-- we've had a Grinch day, we've had staff and students dressed as elves, and we had our annual staff Ugly Sweater contest. The sweater with my pictures attached won again -- that's three years in a row!

The spirit of the season is all around us. Our Student Lighthouse Team organized a Marketplace event this week to sell items to raise money for charity. We received a donation of nine boxes of children's books from Suzanne Degley at Barnes and Noble, books that will be given away to our students. Our PTO organized a wonderful staff appreciation luncheon last Friday -- much appreciated by all! A group of staff and families went caroling Tuesday night in the community of North Glen Village. Everywhere you turn, the joyful buzz of the holidays.

Please remember that we're planning to load up buses for the WWES School Night with the Pacers on Monday, Jan. 29. You should have received Pacers packets this week and our letter inviting you to ride with us. We hope you can be part of this special WWES event.

Whether you're staying close to home or traveling, we wish you Merry Christmas and a safe, restful break. We will see you on Jan. 3.

Special Area Spotlight:

Media Center

This week your child participated in the Hour of Code. Coding is what makes it possible for us to

create computer software, apps, and websites. All students at WWES had at least one hour of

coding this week.

What is the Hour of Code? The Hour of Code is one-hour of computer science. The Hour of Code

began as a one-hour coding challenge to give students a fun first introduction to computer science

and has become a global learning event, celebration, and awareness event.

Why computer science? Computer science is foundational. Computer science is changing every

industry. Every 21st-century student should have the opportunity to learn how to create technology.

Computer science concepts also help nurture creativity and problem-solving skills to prepare

students for any future career.

How can your child continue learning this skill? Click on this link https://hourofcode.com/us/learn

Parisi Press:

WOW!! How is it possible that 2017 is coming to an

end?! We all say it, right? Time passes by quickly for

sure and the holiday seasons can either push us over the

edge a bit or it can cause us to slow down and

appreciate those around us. As I reflect on the school

year, I can't help but be thankful for your children, our

staff, and the amazing families we have at WWES. The

smiling faces we greet each morning bring us such great

cheer throughout the day. I hope you all have a wonder-

ful winter break and I look forward to seeing everyone in 2018!

Westfield Washington Schools

Elementary School Culinary Competition

We’re thrilled to announce that the date has been set for the annual culinary competition at your school! Please mark your calendars for Wednesday, February 21, 2018. This year, we’re accepting en-tries grade 1 through 4.

The idea behind this event is to help educate the kids in HEALTHY EATING HABITS. Too often we hear about obesity in kids and kids not making the right choices in terms of their eating habits. That’s why we want kids to submit recipes for their favorite healthy Asian Fusion food!

Judging will be based on the following criteria:

* Originality * Kid Friendly * Ease of Preparation * Healthy Attributes

* Plate Presentation * Taste

Timeline of the event:

A flyer will be sent home electronically to the students, and be available in the cafeteria, describing the event. Included with this flyer will be a blank recipe card. Kids who would like to participate need to fill out the recipe card and return it to their teacher. Teachers will collect the recipe cards and give them to building office or cafeteria. Buildings return recipes to their cafeteria lead or can be sent to Karen Ogden @ Support Services no later than Friday, January 12th A distinguished panel of administrators will evaluate recipe submissions and narrow the number of finalists down to 2 kids per school. Those finalists will be formally invited to a Culinary Competition “Cook-Off” on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 tentatively scheduled for 4:30pm. All Finalists will receive a framed plaque, t-shirt, chef hat and apron. The local press will be invited to take pictures of the kid’s creations and parents and teachers can view (and taste!) the final product during the reception portion of the event. Transportation of the kids will not be provided on February 21st for the competition. Kids will need to be dropped off and picked up at Westfield Middle School. Each group of kids will have a kitchen staff member assigned to help them to ensure that there are no safety issues. This will ensure safe food and preparation practices are followed and no one gets harmed.

As an added bonus, our competition is just one of 258 local competitions that Sodexo will be orches-trating across the country in February & March. The winning recipe from each event will be entered to win a national competition in March. More details will follow, but we’re lining up some great prizes for those that are chosen to receive national recognition!

Please let me know if I can answer any questions or concerns.

Tips to be a Finalist in this Year’s Culinary Competition

Have your eye on the prize? Here are some tips that may help!

1. Be original - You don’t have to be like everyone else. Consider putting a new twist on your favorite Asian Fusion recipe.

2. Be creative - A student once submitted a recipe for “dill cookies!” Sounds terrible, but they were actually great! Don’t TRY to be too weird, but we love to see recipes that are different!

3. Don’t do recipes that are too easy or too complicated.

4. This doesn’t have to be your own, original recipe. You can get them off the Internet or anywhere, but try to alter it slightly to make it your own!

5. SORRY, only ONE person can make each recipe at the competition.

6. We are looking for healthy Asian Fusion food recipes, so try to avoid recipes with a lot of sugar or fat in them.

7. At the main competition, judges will consider the following 6 criteria:

* Taste

* Originality

* Ease of Preparation

* Healthy Attributes

* Kid Appeal

* Plate Presentation

The use of one or more of the following ingredients will earn up to 3 bonus points at the judging:

* Low Sodium Soy Sauce * Low Sodium Teriyaki Sauce * Brown Rice

* Bok Choy * Fresh Mushrooms * Lean Chicken

* Lean Pork * Rice Noodles * Tofu

* Garlic * Ginger

GOOD LUCK & HAVE FUN!!!!
