From the Pastor May 17, 2020
The past few weeks we’ve discussed the purgative age of the interior life—it’s characteristics, dangers, and the path forward in the spiritual life. For those who are faithful to prayer, service, and the rooting out of vices in
their life, God will eventually draw them into the Dark Night of the Senses. This dark night is the first of two great purifications that God accomplishes in the soul of one who earnestly seeks to grow in divine intimacy. This purification is necessary for four general reasons. First, though the soul has earnestly tried to root out sin and vice from its life, it finds that there are a number of deeply rooted thoughts, feelings, and desires, that leave it susceptible to venial sin. This deeper transformation is impossible to affect by means of the soul’s own efforts; therefore God undertakes the work. Second, as mentioned in a previous installment, pride is difficult to overcome for those in the purgative age as, what they perceive to be fast spiritual growth, generally leads them to have a sense of personal holiness that exceeds their actual state of advancement. God’s activity during this time, as we will see, addresses this temptation. Third, the prayer of the purgative age leaves one keenly aware of God’s presence within creation, but not in the soul. In this dark night, God will slowly accustom the soul to a
new, more interior form of prayer. Fourth and finally, the souls in the purgative age, even when on guard against the trap of sentimentalism, can’t help but associate, to one degree or another, their emotional states with their relationship to God. God’s method of affecting this purification is straightforward. He begins to lessen, then fully remove, any sensible, emotional content from one’s life of prayer. Simultaneously, he increases the soul’s desire for intimacy. This twofold motion causes interior suffering, but slowly begins to expand one’s capacity for divine intimacy and a deeper, purer encounter with God. As this capacity grows, God will begin, slowly but surely, to acquaint the soul with a new form of prayer, contemplation. It is the sprouting of this new form of prayer that signals the transition from the Dark Night of the Senses into the Illuminative Age of the interior life. We will continue with a further reflection on the nature of contemplation, as distinct from discursive meditation (the form of prayer proper to the Purgative Age), when we continue the series. Praised be Jesus Christ, now and forever!
In Christ,
Fr. Nicks

6TH SUNDAY OF EASTER REFLECT: “LOCAL ACTION: a message from Jeff Mathias, Blue Mt. Food Bank- “In response to COVID-19 the BMAC Food Bank has had to cancel or postpone both fundraising and volunteer events this spring. We are working 6 days per week with close to 50 National Guard troops to keep up with the demand for food assistance in 5 counties. BMAC is currently conducting 5 weekly drive-by food distributions that serve over 1,000 households in Walla Walla and Columbia Counties. We are serving roughly 5% of the WW County population weekly and 7% of the population of Columbia County weekly. [Sites include Walla Walla, Touchet, Burbank, Prescott and Dayton]. The average family is receiving 3.5 days worth of food assistance in each box. We anticipate that the economic recovery will take much longer than the phased plan for lifting COVID restrictions and that we will see elevated levels of need through this year and into the next....DONATIONS ARE GLADLY ACCEPTED, but we are focusing on MONETARY DONATIONS AT THIS TIME.” You may make checks out to your parish, marked Food for the Hungry or give directly to the Blue Mt. Food Bank. Go to www.bmacww.org for more information or to donate online. NATIONAL ACTION:

The word Novena is derived from the Latin novem, meaning nine. This is the number of days that Our Lady and the twelve Apostles prayed in the upper room for the coming of the Paraclete, which came to them on the 10th day. The Ascension of the Lord is Thurs. May 21 but is no longer a Holy day of obligation in many dioceses (including ours) so the feast is moved to the following Sunday. The Novena to the Holy Spirit. O Holy Spirit, O my God, I adore Thee, and acknowledge, here in Thy divine presence, that I am nothing and can do nothing without Thee. Come, great Paraclete, Thou father of the poor, Thou comforter the best, fulfil the promise of our blessed Savior, Who would not leave us orphans, and come into the mind and the heart of Thy poor, unworthy creature, as Thou didst descend on the sacred day of Pentecost on the holy Mother of Jesus and on His first disciples. Grant that I may participate in those gifts which Thou didst communicate to them so wonderfully, and with so much mercy and generosity. Take from my heart whatever is not pleasing to Thee, and make of it a worthy dwelling-place for Thyself. Illumine my mind, that I may see and understand the things that are for my eternal good. Inflame my heart with pure love of Thee, that I may be cleansed from the dross of all inordinate attachments, and that my whole life may be hidden with Jesus in God. Strengthen my will, that I may be made conformable to Thy divine will, and be guided by Thy holy inspirations. Aid me by Thy grace to practice the divine lessons of humility, poverty, obedience, and contempt of the world, which Jesus taught us in His mortal life.
Oh, rend the heavens, and come down, consoling Spirit! that inspired and encouraged by Thee, I may faithfully comply with the duties of my state, carry my daily cross most patiently, and endeavor to accomplish the divine will with the utmost perfection. Spirit of love! Spirit of purity! Spirit of peace! Sanctify my soul more and more, and give me that heavenly peace which the world cannot give. Bless our Holy Father the Pope, bless the Church, bless our bishops, our priests, all Religious Orders, and all the faithful, that they may be filled with the spirit of Christ and labor earnestly for the spread of His kingdom.
O Holy Spirit, Thou Giver of every good and perfect gift, grant me, I beseech Thee, the intentions of this novena. May Thy will be done in me and through me. Mayest Thou be praised and glorified forevermore! Amen.

Padre Nicks
