A Message from Their Excellencies

Greetings unto the populace of the Great Barony of Wastekeep!

Summer is well upon us and the temperature is rising! As the predictions for the weekend of Ye

Merry Greenwood suggest that it will be well into the 100 degree mark, we take this

opportunity to thank in advance all who participated on behalf of the Barony. The follow up

Arts and Sciences gathering at Howard Amon Park is on Wednesday, July 1st - wear garb and

bring your projects!! Thank you to Lord Thorgrimr for pulling this together for us.

Baron Steinbjorn is still recovering from his surgery and following all of physician's and lovely

wife's instructions so that he can re-join everyone as soon as possible. Baroness Katherine will

be at the A & S gathering at the Park on the first and at July Coronation, the 17th - 19th. We

are looking forward to another successful Inlands Encampment! Your assistance in setting up

the Baronial Pavilion on the Eric and Travel Pavilion in our encampment will be much

appreciated.

For those who have declared their intention to participate in the Sergeant's and Courtier Trials

on August 8th, please make sure you have joined the Study Group on Facebook. If you were

unable to make a formal declaration at Springfest, and wish to be included in the trials,

Baroness Katherine will hold a brief court at July Coronation so that you may declare at that

time.

In light of the recent change in status for the Canton of Akornebir, the Baron and Baroness wish

to do everything possible to help the eastern baronial lands to re-group and once again become a

full-fledged Canton. The populace in those areas are holding Newcomer's potlucks and

continuing to have monthly fighters practice under the guidance of Brother William. We

encourage all who can to support those activities!

We are looking forward to another wonderful tournament season with all of you!

Baron Steinbjorn Tros and Baroness Katherine of Akornebir

Baronial Gatherings

Fighters’ practice is outdoors at Howard Amon Park in Richland Tuesdays & Wednesdays at

6:00pm. Fighters’ Practice includes practice for heavy armored combat, youth armored combat, and rapier.

Non-fighters are encouraged to attend, bring projects to work on, observe and-or ask/answer questions. We are

getting a lot of interested people & families watching combat, looking at projects, or asking questions about

what we are working on. Newcomers and experienced members are always welcome. For those who would like

to keep up to date on what’s going on with practice, send an email to subscribe to the fighters’ email groups:

[email protected] or for rapier WasteKeepRapier-

[email protected].

Baronial Council: (Business Meeting) 2nd Thursdays - This monthly event is not in costume and newcomers

are always welcome. It is here that upcoming activities are planned, budgets are discussed, etc. All are welcome

to contribute ideas. The July 9th

meeting location is in the meeting room at Sterling's Famous Steak Seafood &

Salad Bar, 890 George Washington Way Richland, WA 99352. Participants for the Baronial Council Meeting

are encouraged to show up at 6:00 (or before) if they would like to order dinner or to socialize prior to the

The Barony would like to invite everyone who can attend to

help support a follow up demo on the Wednesday after Ye

instead of making them wait for four months until Baron’s Ball to

see what we are all about.

Please come in garb to dance, fight (heavy, YAC, and fencing),

bring your A&S projects finished or not, picture books, and or

anything else you can think of that a new member may be

YIS

Baron Steinbjorn

I will be unable to participate in this month’s Open Armoring but I leave you

to the capable hands of milady Tanya of Wastekeep and Lord Thorgrimr, who

have more than 20 years armoring experience at your disposal.

Lots of people, both new and experienced have been attending these open shop nights with

accessories, acquire new arts & sciences training/skills, and to enjoy the comradery and

friendship offered by the citizens of the Barony of Wastekeep.

NEWCOMERS ARE NICE…Once You Get to Know Them

Advice to Established Members

By Elise Fleming (Alys Katharine)

Having to talk with newcomers can be unnerving for some people, but we all share one thing in common – we were all, once upon a time, newcomers to the SCA. Somehow

we survived the “newby” period to become the more “experienced” member. For many, orientation to the SCA was provided by a friend who was already a member, but

nowadays more and more people are coming into the SCA by themselves. Therefore, many groups have an official host (chatelain/hospitaller) whose main function is to meet

new people, answer questions, give out literature and steer the newcomer to the appropriate resources. However, an official chatelain should not exist so that no one else

need bother with new people. The chatelain supplements each individual member’s

efforts to greet new faces. How can you help welcome a new person?

First, go up and say hello. If you are not that “old” in the group, ask if the person is new. Sometimes it is a veteran member who is showing up after a long absence! Sound

pleased, but not gushy, that the new person was interested enough to come. New people have a need to be noticed. Greeting someone is an easy way to provide simple

recognition. Keep in mind that you are probably far more comfortable in the SCA than the new person is. The SCA is your bailiwick. You can afford to provide the recognition

the newcomer needs to feel more secure in the strange environment and be glad he or she came. This is known as courtesy to strangers, and dukes as well as commoners

practice it.

Introduce the new person to your friends and to those working on crafts. The new person may not remember who they are, but perhaps the members will speak with the

newcomer later in the meeting or at future meetings. Being left alone and ignored is

very hard on a new person!

Ask what the newcomer knows about the SCA. That gives a place to start a conversation and to fill in some gaps in knowledge. Ask why they came to the SCA and

listen with courtesy. Inquire about modern-day hobbies and interests. It may help you identify what areas they might like to know more about. When you want to go back to

your business, suggest that they might like to look around and then come back to talk with you before they leave. Check back with them before the end of the meeting if they

haven’t come back to you.

Ask the person if you can explain what is going on. Too often, established members will say, “If you have any questions, just ask,” and then walk away. New people often do

not know what they want to know, or they may not have a question that they think is worth asking.

Page 12: WWaasstteekkeeeepp WWoorrdd · Baroness Katherine will be at the A & S gathering at the Park on the first and at July Coronation, the 17th - 19th. We ... The site is the Northern

Instead, try something like, “Come with me while I…” and then explain what is going on. Experiment with:

• “May I explain…?”

• “Are you interested in…?” • “What do you like to do?”

• “What are your interests/hobbies?” • “Would you like to talk to someone about… (leatherworking, cooking, embroidery,

fighting, armor, calligraphy, archery, costuming, music, brewing, etc.) ?” • “What can I explain?”

• “May I introduce you to someone who knows about…?”

Help the newcomer participate. If the group is participating in some activity such as dancing, do be sure that you invite the newcomer. Don’t wait for the dance leader to

think of it. And don’t expect that most newcomers will ask a member to dance!

Remember, too, ladies, that if there are not enough lords, you can ask a female newcomer to dance with you. Use the nice touches of courtesy such as “my lord”, “my

lady” and polite gestures such as a slight bow or curtsy, especially if you are in garb. Being called “my lord” or “my lady” enhances the feeling of participation and offers a

touch of confidence to the newcomer.

See that newcomer information is available. Arrange with the seneschal or chatelain/hospitaller to have newcomer material brought each week, such as a copy of

the kingdom’s newcomer booklet, the SCA’s Forward into the Past, a copy of Tournaments Illuminated and/or your kingdom’s newsletter. You might also want to

have a copy of Compleat Anachronist, instructions for making simple garb, a photo album, and so forth. Include a local group handout listing meeting place and times,

especially for guilds or interest groups, a contact person and phone number or e-mail address. Give out a copy of the group’s newsletter. Bring an SCA membership form and

an order form for items from the Stock Clerk.

Get the newcomer’s name and contact information. Ask them to sign a “guest book”

so that you have a way to contact them if they come to several meetings and then don’t show up. Ask why they haven’t been attending. Their reasons may be illuminating!

With all this, keep in mind that a newcomer may suffer from overload. There is so much

to see and learn! There are too many people doing too many quality pieces of handcrafts and the newcomer may feel as if he or she can never measure up to the experienced

member’s level of skill. Having been told something once is no guarantee that the new person heard it or will remember it. That is why brief, informal newcomer meetings can

be so important and why continued, personal contact from you, the established member, is so vital to their continued participation.

May you never lack for something to say to a new person and may your group never

lack a steady supply of new people!

Thorgrimr ~ Follow-up Demo after RenFair put inquiry out online and from the responses I received it looks

like the Wednesday, July 1st practice following Renfair is the best time. (Please see event flyer included in the

Word) Great time to capitalize on the interest generated at the fair instead of making people wait until Baron’s

Ball in October to see what we ae all about. Stjarna: I will be doing dancing that Wednesday too.

Steinbjorn ~ If you had planned on carpooling with me to events this season please verify that I will be

attending that event now so other arrangements can be made if I cannot go. Thank you

Canton Business

Please see Canton business meeting notes on the following page.

Gudrun: We had a great response to Springfest and had 4 families showing interest. Please see last paragraph of

the Canton business meeting notes on the following page.

As a Barony we need to help support the Canton in their endeavors to regain active status.

Hammr: It would be great if some of the more experienced fighters could come to fight practice to help teach us

new fighters more skills, even if they do not get into armor. I would like to see about starting a war unit to drill

and fight together. Fregus: I would like to support this too since even though we have a superior force, behind

the Ship-crew at events & we tend to get split up because we are not a fighting unit. Ysabella: Let’s start a

discussion online to talk about this topic.

Fergus, Brother William, Melissa, Cora, Lili, Sara, Aiden, Brycen.

Called to order at 6:15pm

Information from the Baronial and Kingdom Seneschals:

Because we currently have no seneschal we are in forbearance. We have two years to create a

group, with a seneschal again. All of our Canton property goes to Baronial storage. The Canton

funds are moved to an account which is held by the Barony until the Canton is reinstated.

We can no longer have official Canton gatherings (Fighters Practices, A&S, business meetings)

without Baronial representation.

Discussions:

BBBBQ will become an unofficial gathering. Champions can return regalia.

AYLI can remain as a Baronial event. It is being Event Stewarded by two Baronial members.

Decisions:

We plan to regroup and start up again in a year. Take time to get new members up to speed.

Plan to keep a Tuesday (the same week as the Baronial Council Meeting) Fighters practice in

Walla Walla. It will be an official Baronial Practice.

We will have unofficial, occasional, fighters practices on Sunday afternoons in Walla Walla and

Pendleton.

There will be a Newcomers Potluck Night once a month. The 2nd Tuesday after the Tuesday

Fighters practice. Planned to be held at Katherine’s to keep it closer to the middle. We can do

A&S, rapier, what officers do, archery, etc. The first one will be on the 23rd of June.
