Our Communion Practice

The Lord’s Supper is a fellowship meal. In this meal Jesus expresses his fellowship with us by giving us his body and blood for the forgiveness of sins. In this meal we also express our fellowship with each other, that is, that we are united in a common confession of faith.

We at Emanuel want everyone to enjoy this fellowship meal. However, we cannot ask someone to express agreement with us until we give that person an opportunity to discover what we teach. That is why we schedule frequent Life With God classes to provide an overview of our teachings. Please ask one of our pastors for the date when the next class begins.

If you are a member of Emanuel or a member of a WELS or ELS congregation, we invite you to express our common confession by communing with us. You may wish to use the “Personal Preparation for Holy Communion” on page 156 of Christian Worship to examine yourself. Please register your intent to commune as a member or guest by filling out the Friendship Register, which is located at the end of the pew.

Non-Alcoholic Communion Wine Now Available We now offer non-alcoholic white communion wine. You will find it

in the center of the communion trays. Following our practice of offering gluten free wafers, if you need to receive non-alcoholic

communion wine, please ask the person serving the wine. The white non-alcoholic communion wine is intended only for people who, because of medical or conscience reasons are unable to receive alcohol. We hope this allows more members to receive the blessings of Holy Communion. Please pass this information on to any member

you know who can benefit from our new Communion practice.

Large Print Hymnals

Large-print copies of the service are available for anyone in need – please ask an usher for a copy.

Wheelchair Area For your convenience, there are two areas set aside to accommodate members with wheelchairs, walkers, or other special space needs. Ushers are available to assist you to the following locations:

Halfway down the middle and side isles on the lectern side of church, there is a pew with wheelchair space on either end.

In the right half of the front row, also on the lectern side, there is a larger area with wheelchair space.

Parent Room Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me.” We love children and encourage their worship. Please don’t feel embarrassed if your child is restless during the service. You are among caring people who understand. If you feel that your children are distracting others from worship, you may take them to the entryway or a parent’s room is available. There is a closed-circuit TV in the room to watch & listen to the service. An usher can assist you in locating this room, also called the “Bible Class Room”.

Attention Hearing Impaired Members Special receivers are available to help you hear the service. Ask one of our ushers for a receiver and return it to an usher after the service.

DEPRESSION More Than a Bump in the Road

A presentation on depression will be held on Saturday, November 14, at 10:00 a.m. in the Community Room.

Depression is a common mental health issue that many people experience in their lifetimes. Depression can affect children as well as adults. Depression can lead to more serious problems. The holiday season is a time when depression can be more prevalent.

This presentation will be given by Elizabeth Seelow, a professional counselor with Christian Family Counseling. The different areas to be covered in her presentation are

o What is depression? o What are symptoms of depression? o What are causes of depression? o How is depression diagnosed? o How is depression treated? o How can you help a family member or friend with depression?

There will be a question and answer time at the end of the presentation.

If you think you may have depression or know someone who has or may have depression or you just want to learn more about depression, you are encouraged to attend.

Book Fair Thank You A big thank you to all who visited our Fall Book Fair and also to all who worked at the fair. A special thank you to the 7th and 8th graders for their help in setting up and taking down the fair. We were able to purchase $868 worth of books for our school library! Thank You The Lutheran Women’s Missionary Society would like to thank all the people who donated clothes and money to the “Mission to the Children.” Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

Highlights of Quarterly Congregational Meeting October 19, 2015

The major highlight of the evening was the fact that our congregation has chosen to issue a call to Pastor Kevin Wattles to serve as our third pastor. Pastor Wattles is currently serving at Grace Lutheran Church in Falls Church, VA, a church of 600 members and 443 communicants. Pastor Wattles is a 1996 graduate of Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon, served as vicar at St Matthew in Appleton and has served at Grace in Falls Church, VA since July of 1996. Pastor Wattles is married and has three children, ages 6, 11, and 14. Please keep Pastor Wattles in your prayers as he considers this call.

Financial highlight: as of the first three months of this fiscal year we have revenues of $373,665 and expenditures of $331,626.

Our building fund loan has a current amount due of $124,065.61 and is scheduled to be totally repaid by March 1, 2016.

Our financial review (audit) of the 2014-15 fiscal year was done by Paul Hartwig, former principal at FVLHS, and Bob Becker, former business manager for FVLHS. Comments from both Paul and Bob were very favorable towards or financial policies and procedures as well as our office and school staff. They found our financial records all to be in order. They left us with several recommendations regarding possible ways to reduce some cost and to improve our benefit structure for our staff.

The final highlight is that the carpet in the church (downstairs) will be replaced, hopefully, during early November. The carpet has been ordered and should be in at the installers by the end of this week. No Astrobrites or neon colors but in a very pleasant multi shades of browns and tans. Even better, the funds to pay for the carpet, approximately $7,000 are already on hand. Not a budget expenditure, but paid for with the church’s part of the Scrip proceeds, an estate, and some previously donated funds for this purpose. Areas to be carpeted are the altar, pastors’ room, deacons’ room, and the aisles. Once we have an install date we are going to need some YOUNG, ABLE BODIED volunteers to remove and carry out the existing carpet.

Please contact Mark Niemuth, church properties director, if you can help us with this project.

All other board, pastor, principal, and staff minister reports are available for you to read either on the Emanuel web site or there are still meeting packets available either in the office or the welcome center. Approved minutes for this meeting are also available on the Emanuel web site.

Principal Foley made a few brief comments regarding our congregation possibly becoming a part of the school Choice program where public funds may be used to help families meeting federal income guidelines to attend our school. The Coordinating Council will be deciding in the next month if we want to participate and then Mr. Foley will be holding some informational meetings to tell us about the program.

Any questions or comments about this report or the meeting please contact me.

Richard Yerkey, Executive Director

Emanuel Cost per Child Recently Emanuel conducted its annual financial audit using an outside auditing group. One of the recommendations of the financial review team was to have Emanuel annually publish the school’s cost per child amount as well as the percentage of cost covered by congregational offerings. For the 2015-16 school year, the cost per child is approximately $5600 per K-8 student. The school fee of $1296/child covers 23% of this cost and congregational offerings cover 77% of the cost. Thank you for your tremendous financial support, which allows Emanuel to carry out this important ministry.
