November Program Our speaker for November was professional genealogist Pam Vestal. Pam gave another excellent presen-tation, “Genealogy Tips and Tricks”. She talked about “strategies for finding, extracting, organizing and ana-lyzing information”. Some of her suggestions were to Explore the FAN Club: Friends, Family, Associates and Neighbors, Follow the Money, Check All Related Records, Look for Hidden Records, Explore Miscellaneous Records, Decipher Codes. Learn about the Guidelines (for census enumerators), Search for Name Varia-tions, Hunt for Evidence of Name Changes, Take Fuller Advantage of Google, Search by Address, Recover Missing Webpages, Take Screenshots, Consider the Source, Label Photos and Documents, Examine Framed Photos, Download, and Use FamilySearch Strategically. With all of these topics, Pam had examples and websites. It was a very helpful presentation (and now lots of ideas of strategies to try!). Pam’s website is Generations Genealogy, www.generatonsgen.com.

Willamette Valley Genealogical Society’s Family Tree DNA Project WVGS has a DNA Project for both men and women through www.familytreedna.com. If

any of you have questions regarding DNA and which tests to order, please e-mail Emily Aulicino at: [email protected]. Emily is the WVGS Family Tree DNA Project Adminis-trator. WVGS members (and non-members) receive a discounted DNA test rate rather than paying the full amount listed on the Family Tree DNA company’s home page. According to Emily, “The company then gives the society a percentage of the sale for Y-DNA and mtDNA tests, but not for SNP tests, Family Finder, nor any upgrades.

You can also get your DNA tested through the WVGS project, and then submit it to other groups. To receive the WVGS project’s discount (and earn the WVGS a rebate), go to the WVGS website, www.wvgsor.org, click on the Research tab, and at the bottom of the page click on the FamilyTreeDNA logo to go to their website.

Oregon 1916 Birth Index Statewide birth certificates are now available at the Oregon State Archives (OSA) for the first time, but only for the year 1916. Birth records are restricted for 100 years from the date of birth. They are sent from the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) in Portland to the OSA. The Oregon State Archives is allowing WVGS to publish their index to the Oregon 1916 birth certificates. This index was compiled by volunteers at the Archives and includes birth name, date of birth, county, names of parents and additional comments if needed such as a name change. A copy of the index for births in all counties in Oregon will be in a searchable pdf for-mat on our website. We will publish the surnames for 1916 Births for selected counties in Bea-ver Briefs beginning with the Fall 2017 issues. To obtain a copy of the birth certificate, visit the OSA at 800 Summer St. NE, Salem, OR 97310. Their phone number is 503-373-0701 and website is sos.oregon.gov/archives/pages/records.aspx. They are open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4:45 p.m., closed for lunch and holidays. WVGS will also go to the Archives for you to make a non-certified copy. The cost is $10 per

document. Contact Tony Hoff, Corresponding Secretary, at [email protected].

NEHGS Launches Interactive Mayflower Website In September of 1620, 102 passengers—men, women, and children—and a crew of approximately 30 people left England aboard the Mayflower to seek freedom to prac-tice their religion and opportunity in the New World. After a harrowing sixty-six-day voyage across the Atlan-tic, the Mayflower arrived in Cape Cod; by December of 1620, the passengers planted the first permanent settle-ment of New England in Plymouth, and lay the founda-tion for America. The Mayflower passengers did not, of course, land in a place devoid of people or culture. They arrived in the Wampanoag Nation. By commemorating the landing of the Mayflower, we honor the story of the Pilgrims and of the native Wampa-noag people. Their stories, collectively and individually, embody the triumphs and tragedies of life in early New England, and in the country itself. As we commemorate the landing of the Mayflower—an event of national and international significance—we will engage people in a series of programs, publications, exhi-bitions, and tours that will touch on the key themes of exploration, innovation, religious freedom, self-governance, immigration, and Thanksgiving as we honor and learn from the enduring legacies of the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag. Join us to explore your heritage, to understand your fam-ily’s unique place in history, and to be a part of the May-flower story.

Salem Public Library

On November 7th, 2017 voters in the City of Salem approved an $18.6 million bond measure to repair and renovate Salem Public Library and the parking garage. This will require that the Library move staff and books from the building. Since the Library offers so much more that books, they are look-ing to rent space for 2 to 3 years to be able to provide services to patrons. What does this mean for Willamette Valley Genealogical Society? We have our monthly meetings at the library, our book collection is available there and volunteers serve patrons from our Genealogy Desk. The staff is working on plans, that initially include our books being stored with the library’s books and a plan that we would have a desk at their temporary space to continue with our successful genealogy help program. We will have to find another place to meet on Saturdays. More to come!!

Ancestry.com One of the databases that Ancestry scanned was index cards with obituaries that were stored in the Alcove at the Oregon State Library. WVGS members cut obituaries for many years from the Statesman Journal (or Capital Journal or Statesman). These were scanned by Ancestry and posted on ances-try.com under Willamette Valley, Oregon, Death Records, 1838-2006. Users of Ancestry.com know that often results don’t show up in your initial search using the “Search“ tab. You have to search individual data-bases and often you will find more results. If you use ancestry.com and are searching for an obituary for someone who died in the Salem area (includes Marion, Polk, Linn and Yamhill counties) and may have had an obituary in the newspaper, you might find it by: Selecting Search, then Card Catalog. Type in Willamette Valley, Oregon, Death Records Then type the name of the person you are searching for. Many names in the index of our database are miss-ing the Death Year, so you will have to look through the results list. If you select “image” you can look at the obituary. Don’t forget to look at the whole image and the page before and after! The image was on an index card which had information on both sides. And some cards had information hand-written on the bottom of the card.

American Ancestors The number of people trying to determine whether they are descended from a Mayflower passenger is surging as the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims’ arrival in the New World approaches in 2020. Now, a partnership between the New England Historic Genealogical Society and the General Society of Mayflow-er Descendants is making it easier to figure out. The Boston-based genealogical society is digitizing and indexing authenticated Mayflower Pilgrim genealogies and 50 years’ worth of the “Mayflower Quarterly” maga-zine, and making them available at its research site

www.americanancestors.org

General Society of Mayflower Descendants Founded 1897

Anyone who arrived in Plymouth as a passenger on the Mayflower is considered a Pilgrim, with no distinction be-ing made on the basis of their original purposes for mak-ing the voyage. Proven lineage from a passenger, ap-proved by a Historian General, qualifies one to be a member of the General Society of Mayflower Descend-ants.
