Honoring our VeteransThis Veteran’s Day week, PBS and WTVP continue to air “Stories of Service”—programming that explores and honors veterans’ experiences and provides a deeper understanding of our country’s military historyDebt of Honor: Disabled Veterans in American History examines the way in which the American government and society as a whole have regarded disabled veterans throughout history, beginning in the aftermath of the Revolutionary War and continuing through today’s conflicts in the Middle East. The film combines personal stories, told by distinguished disabled veterans, with deep history narrated by leading scholars in the fields of disability studies, history and psychology to illustrate the human cost of war and the enormous sacrifices of military service. These sacrifices are brought to life through hundreds of carefully curated still images and archival footage from across the country. New from six-time Emmy Award-win-ning director Ric Burns, Debt of Honor airs Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 8 p.m.
In Independent Lens “Stray Dog” on Monday, Nov. 9 at 9 p.m., viewers meet Ronnie “Stray Dog” Hall, a motorcycle-riding, stereotype-shattering Vietnam veteran trying to come to terms with his combat experience and help others. Iwo Jima: From Combat to Comrades on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. follows survivors of perhaps the fiercest battle of WWII as they return to Iwo Jima for a Reunion of Honor. And WTVP is honored to present an encore of The Greatest Honor on Thursday, Nov. 12 at 9 p.m. Nominated for four Emmy awards, this film by Kane Farabaugh tells the story of John Amm, a distinguished WWII vet from Pontiac, Illinois.
Explore the most extraordinary places on the planet—Mount Everest, the Grand Canyon, Victoria Falls, the Amazon and more—in Earth’s Natural Wonders. This three-part series visits six continents to learn how these natural wonders evolved and hear rarely told stories about the challenges their inhabitants face—from killer bees to man-eating tigers. Wednesdays, Nov. 4-18 at 7 p.m. Pictured: Ice Fall doctors climbing snow peaks, Khumba Ice Fall, Mt. Everest.

Meet Nature Cat!New friends, new times! The PBS KIDS lineup is changing as of Nov. 16. See the grids for full details.
Nature Cat is swashbuckling his way into the schedule this month in an exciting premier event! When his family is home, Fred is a normal house cat. But when they leave…Tally ho! He transforms into Nature Cat, “backyard explorer extraordinaire.” There’s just one problem—he has no instincts for nature. But with the help of his friends, Nature Cat embarks on action-packed adventures that include exciting nature investiga-tions, “aha” discovery moments and humor, all while inspiring children to go outside.
In Wild Kratts: A Creature Christmas, a holiday party quickly turns in to a rescue mission when favorite creatures are suddenly disappearing around the globe! Our heroes must race against time to thwart their greedy archrivals’ most miserly scheme yet! Will they be able to return their baby animal friends to their homes in time for the holidays?
The two programs air together as a special 90-minute block on Wednesday, Nov. 25 at 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. The special presentation encores Thursday and Friday at the same times, and Saturday and Sunday beginning at 7 a.m. Nature Cat will continue Mondays and Wednesdays at 7 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. beginning Nov. 30.

A time for giving thanksWTVP has much to be thankful for this year; a fact evidenced by the more than one hundred volunteers who gathered in our studio for our 29th annual Volunteer Recognition Reception. It was awe-inspiring to walk into a room of so many people dedicated to the mission of local public media, especially knowing that they represented only a fraction of the hundreds of volunteers who work so selflessly throughout the year. Thank you to all of you who help make WTVP the important community asset it is, in and for Central Illinois. This is also the time of year we give extra thanks to our veterans and their families. As a former officer in the Navy, I am honored that PBS and WTVP showcase programming throughout the year that highlights stories of service and those who serve. This month we are pleased to add local specials to PBS’ national offerings, includ-ing an At Issue on treating military trauma and an encore of The Greatest Honor, the Emmy-nominated film by Kane Farabaugh about John Amm, a WWII veteran from Pontiac.
Our thanks also go out to you, our loyal and active members. Your continued support of WTVP makes an enormous contribution to the quality of life in Central Illinois. I look forward to thanking you in person at the many events we have planned throughout the season. And on behalf of everyone at WTVP, I wish you and yours a safe and happy Thanksgiving.

Making North AmericaWhat are the secrets that lie beneath your feet?
Mighty, elemental forces molded North America—fiery eruptions, titanic floods, the grinding of great ice sheets, and massive impacts from space all shaped our homeland. Discover how forces of almost unimaginable power gave birth to our continent in NOVA’s Making North America.Hosted by renowned paleontolo-gist Kirk Johnson, this spectacular road trip through a tumultuous deep past explores three fundamen-tal questions: How was the con-tinent built? How did life evolve here? And how has the continent shaped us? “Making North Ameri-ca” reveals the incredible story of a majestic continent.
Airing Wednesdays, Nov. 4, 11, and 18 at 8 p.m., this epic series unfolds in a forgotten world that existed long before our own, crossed by long-lost mountain ranges, deserts the size of Africa, and vast inland seas spanning the length of the continent. Explore beloved landmarks like the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone National Park from the inside out as we witness the clash of nature’s creative and destructive forces.

The PilgrimsDiscover the harrowing and brutal truths behind the Pilgrims’ arrival in the New World and the myths of Thanksgiving. Director Ric Burns explores the history of our nation’s beginnings in this epic tale of converging forces.
“From childhood on, Americans are taught to think of the voyage of the Mayflower and the coming of the Pilgrims as the true founding moment of America,” said Burns, “and we honor them as such every year on Thanksgiving—even though they came thirteen years after the founding of Jamestown in 1607. The real story of the Pilgrims —who they were, what drove them on, what happened to them in the new world, how they succeeded and how they failed and why we remember them as we do—is far more gripping, poignant, harrow-ing and strange—and far more revealing—than the Thanksgiving myth we think we know.”
“The Pilgrims,” narrated by cele-brated actor Oliver Platt, endeav-ors to tell the true story of a small group of religious radicals whose determination to establish a sepa-ratist religious community planted the seeds for America’s founding. This two-hour documentary, pre-miering on American Experience on Tuesday, Nov. 24 at 7 p.m., includes stunning recreations that bring to life the stark, true story of America’s early radical settlers and features the final film performance of the late actor Roger Rees.

What’s Up Doc?As a thank you to our loyal supporters and Doc Martin fans, WTVP is serving up a special treat on Thanksgiving Night. After your dishes are washed and the family is settling down for the night, join us Thursday, Nov. 26 at 9 p.m. for a preview of the first episode of the long-anticipated Doc Martin Season VII!
The full series will not be released until sometime in January, but we’ve se-cured rights for this small taste of what’s coming in the new—and reportedly final—season. And what is in store for us in Port Wenn? Heartbroken after Louisa’s (Caroline Catz) departure at the end of Season VI, the new series finds Martin ready to make some changes and win his family back.
But wait…there’s more! Also in anticipation of the new season, tune in for a new behind-the-scenes special looking at the making of Season VII. Shot on location in the picturesque seaside village of Port Isaac during filming of the series, Doc Martin – Seven Grumpy Seasons features interviews with producers, cast members, and director Ben Gregor. This pledge special promises to be an enjoyable sneak peek at what Martin Clunes - the Doc himself - is calling the “best” series yet. The special premieres Saturday, Nov. 28 at 8 p.m.
Andrea Bocelli Sings the MoviesLegendary tenor Andrea Bocelli pays musical tribute to the silver screen in a lush concert of beloved songs from the movies. Joined by Grammy-winning producer David Foster, the renowned tenor performs fresh arrangements of memorable favorites from blockbuster classics—including The Godfather, Scent of a Woman, Dr. Zhivago, Once Upon a Time in America, Breakfast at Tiffany’s—and famed composers such as Leonard Bernstein and Ennio Mor-ricone. Hollywood luminaries John Travolta, Ryan O’Neal, Ali McGraw, and Andy Garcia join Bocelli onstage to speak about the films from which the songs derive. Andrea Bocelli: Cinema airs Friday, Nov. 27 at 8 p.m. on Great Performances.
But this is just one of the stunning performances coming your way this month as part of the the PBS Arts Fall Festival. Chita Rivera hits the stage once more in a performance-studded tribute to her more than 70-year career (Great Performances, Nov. 6 at 8 p.m.). Onstage in America: Honky throws political correctness out the window in a stage comedy about racism in America (Nov. 6 at 9 p.m.). Live from Lincoln Center: Act One reimagines Moss Hart’s captivating memoir for the stage in a vivid perfor-mance starring Tony Shahoub (Nov. 13 at 8 p.m.). And First You Dream:
The Music of Kander and Ebb features sparkling new arrangements of some of the greatest songs to ever grace a Broadway stage, performed by a stellar Broadway cast (Nov. 20, 8 p.m.).

A TV studio becomes a house of horrors in the Screening Room original short “Beta”. And finally, K.M. Jamison’s “Inhumane” explores the visceral fear of a young woman who finds herself in the clutches of a serial killer. Ghosts, ghouls, and psychos are all present and accounted for on the next episode of The Screening Room, Saturday, 11/7 at 11 p.m. Don’t watch it alone!

Alice’s RestaurantFifty years ago, in 1965, Arlo Guth-rie took out the trash following a “Thanksgiving dinner that couldn’t be beat.” The hilarious account of actual events that precluded Arlo from military service in 1966 went on to become Alice’s Restaurant, a platinum-selling record in 1967, and a full-length motion picture in 1969. Today it’s as much a part of Thanksgiving tradition as cranberry sauce.
For the first time in a decade, folk icon Arlo Guthrie brings The Alice’s Restaurant Massacree in its entirety to the stage. On the 50th anniversary of Arlo’s arrest for littering, Alice’s Restaurant 50th Anniversary Concert with Arlo Guthrie premieres Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m.
Quartetto Gelato“We are Quartetto Gelato from Toronto!” So starts a dazzling program of mind bending musicality where having fun is serious business. WTVP is spooning up a taste of Quartetto Gelato for you Friday, Nov. 20 at 10 p.m. on Sound Bites with the Peoria Symphony Orchestra. Known for virtuosic showpieces, romantic tenor arias, pyrotechnical solos, blazing gypsy show pieces, multi-instrument mastery and a World Accordion Champion, Quartetto Gelato’s theatrical stage presence and relaxed humor will establish an intimate rapport with viewing audiences as easily as it did with our studio audience.
In addition to this premiere, “Symphony Sundays” continues Nov. 1-22 at 3 p.m. with more Sound Bites. This month’s encore con-certs include “Marcia & Friends”, “Mike Block: One World Cello”, “Piano Parables with Jade Simmons”, and “Music for Four” with the Lincoln Quartet.
Sound Bites with the Peoria Symphony Orchestra is a collaboration of WTVP and PSO and made pos-sible by funding from Sid and Flo Banwart. Additional support provided by the Peoria Symphony Guild.
SPY— The (Long) GoodbyeTune in Saturday, Nov. 21 beginning at 8 p.m. (notice the early start time!) for the 45-minute series finale of SPY. Or catch the encore Thanks-giving night, Nov. 26, at 10 p.m.
This “Viewers’ Choice” winner from our “Great BritCom Vote 2014” met with mixed reviews once it hit our schedule this past summer. Some of you found it delightful and refreshing, others a brand of humor not to their standard. Whether you gave it jeers or cheers, our short rights window for the series is about to close so this is your chance to say goodbye.
Next up for the latter half of our BritCom hour is Moone Boy. This “Staff Pick” is an entertaining semi-autobiographical series written by and starring Chris O’Dowd as the imaginary friend of 11 year old Martin, the youngest child in the large, loud Moone family. Moone Boy will join the WTVP schedule on Dec. 12 at 8:30 p.m. following As Time Goes By.
