A Month of RememberingThe greatest honor is to never forget.

The Greatest Honor is the story of a son’s last chance to understand the combat experience of his father, John Amm, a quiet farmer, husband and father from Pontiac, Illinois—and a veteran of “C” Company of the 260th Infantry Regiment, 65th Infantry Division.John Amm’s unit was the “tip of the spear” in the Allied push into Germany during the final stages of World War 2.

On the 500 mile route the unit took from Le Havre, France to Linz, Austria, John Amm and his fellow infantrymen witnessed the horrors of the Holocaust, and the cost of the war on the people in towns and camps they liberated, as well as the sacrifices made by his comrades in arms.

He remained mostly silent about this experience for almost 70 years.

This documentary from Emmy® award-winning producer, writer, and filmmaker, Kane Farabaugh details the journey of discovering John Amm’s silent heroism, what that information has done to help his own family and those he served with understand a pivotal moment in history, and the effort to preserve that story for posterity.

The Greatest Honor premieres on local public television Friday, May 22 at 8 p.m. For more about this film, see page 23.

Powell USA (Ret.), multi Grammy Award-winning music legend Gloria Estefan, and “The Voice” 2014 winner Tessanne Chin, and in performance with the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of maestro Jack Everly. Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise co-host live from the West Lawn of U.S. Capitol on Sunday, May 24 at 7 p.m. Encore immediately follows at 8:30 p.m.

Doc and DogsOur encore of Doc Martin Season 6 just concluded, so what’s a station to do? How about follow the real “Doc” (actor Martin Clunes) on a heartwarming quest to discover the origins of man’s best friend?

Heartwarming? Yes. Unlike Doc Martin, Martin Clunes is an avid dog lover. In Martin Clunes: A Man and His Dogs, he travels from the U.K. to America, Australia, and Africa, and meets many of the 400 recognized dog breeds from around the world, exploring the history and science of canines and their unique socialization with humans. Over the course of this enjoyable two-part program, airing Saturdays, May 2 and 9 at 9 p.m., he examines the pack mentality and behavioral simi-larities still shared by domestic dogs, wild dogs and wolves, unearthing the traits that allowed for the mutu-ally beneficial relationship between humans and dogs to develop.

An encore of Doc Martin Seasons 3-6 begins Saturday, May 16 from 9-11 p.m. as Doc and Louisa find themselves held hostage in the two-part opener, “On the Edge”. Single episodes continue Saturdays from 9-10 p.m. A new season of Doc Martin is in production and we anticipate it being released for air in winter 2016.

The Roosevelts ReturnWhen The Roosevelts: An Intimate History premiered on PBS last fall, it was a national event that was shared by families from the east coast to the west. The seven-part Ken Burns film found in our country’s history a human drama that captured the attention of the entire nation. The series – and the conversations it triggered – reflected our country’s ongoing interest in its history and its relevance to our times. And now it’s back. Join WTVP Tuesdays from 7-9 p.m. beginning May 5* for a series encore.

The series is a remarkable history les-son, following the lives of Theodore, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt in a single narrative through more than a century of world politics and nation building. It is also an intimate human story about love and betrayal, family feeling and personal courage and the conquest of fear.

Also returning is the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Bradley Uni-versity (OLLI) study group devoted to the series. Led by Carol May, this group will meet on a weekly basis during the broadcast to discuss the many dimensions of the Roosevelt story. His new film, American Masters: American ballet Theatre: A History, combines intimate rehearsal footage, virtuoso perfor-mances and interviews with ABT’s key figures including artists Alicia Alonso, the late Donald Saddler and Frederic Franklin; dancers Susan Jaffe, Julie Kent, Misty Copeland, Gillian Murphy, Marcelo Gomes and Hee Seo; choreographer Alexei Ratmansky and artistic director Kevin McKenzie. Friday, May 15 at 8 p.m.

Great Performances: boston Symphony orchestra: Andris Nelsons Inaugural Concert is a wide-ranging, one-night-only event celebrating the start of BSO music director Andris Nelsons’ tenure as the 15th music director of the orchestra. The musical extravaganza features two of the conductor’s close colleagues, soprano Kristine Opolais and tenor Jonas Kaufmann. Each sings selections from the Wagnerian and Italian verismo repertoires, they then join forces for a powerful duet from Puccini’s Manon Lescaut. The concert opens with Wagner’s Tannhäuser Overture — the work that first inspired a five-year-old Nelsons to a life in music — and closes with Respighi’s spectacular orchestral showcase, Pines of Rome. 1971Before Watergate, WikiLeaks and Edward Snowden, there was the Citizens’ Commission to Investigate the FBI.

On March 8, 1971, a band of suburban parents, university professors and community leaders broke into a small FBI field office in Media, Pennsylvania, just outside Philadelphia. Calling themselves the Citizens’ Commission to Investigate the FBI, the eight activists took hundreds of secret files and shared them anonymously with select members of Congress and the news media. By doing so, they uncovered evidence of the FBI’s vast and illegal regime of spying on and intimidating American citizens.

Despite one of the largest investiga-tions ever conducted, the FBI never solved the mystery of the break-in, and the identities of those respon-sible remained a secret — until now. For the first time, the members of the Citizens’ Commission have spo-ken out. 1971 is their story. Directed and produced by Johanna Hamilton, the film premieres on Independent Lens Monday, May 18 at 9 p.m.

Illinois LawmakersIllinois Lawmakers is back, Fridays at 7:30 p.m. beginning 5/1, with coverage of the final weeks of the spring session of the Illinois General Assembly. Hosted by Jak Tichenor, the series provides in-depth coverage and analysis of the General Assembly by veteran Statehouse reporters, news features, and interviews with leading lawmakers from both sides of the aisle. Join in a lively discussion of the many dimensions of the Roosevelt story based on viewing the Ken Burns documentary The Roosevelts: An Intimate History. Participants must be able to watch the series as aired on WTVP and participate in group discussions based on study questions provided by the facilitator. Participants may read The Three Roosevelts by James MacGregor Burns and Susan Dunn or Geoffrey Ward’s companion book for the TV series. These titles can be obtained new or used online or obtained from local libraries. They are recom-mended, not required.

Spearheading our Downton Abbey gala, creating our Nerd Night trivia competition, producing many on-air and new giving campaigns, attracting many new friends to the station, and serving on the search committee for our new CEO are just a few of her accomplishments, all of which were done with smart enthusiasm and a true eye on the mission of public broadcasting. She has been an unceasing ambassador for WTVP during her tenure and opened many opportunities for the station. She will be greatly missed, but we wish her well as she embarks on new adventures. Half Dance, Half Dare

We all have a family member who was in some way affected by or shaped by WWII. I was unable to ask my own grandfathers about their combat experience in World War II, and The Greast Honor is in many ways my effort to help someone else capture the opportunity to understand and appreciate the sacrifice and service of those who answered the call of their country in the most imperiled hour of the planet.

To help frame this story, I chose not to have a narrator, but rather allow the veterans profiled in this documentary tell their own story, in their own words, in their own way.

Titles help illustrate the facts of their experiences, but the story is meant to give control to those who experienced and witnessed the events firsthand.

Weaving natural sound, newsreel clips, and never before seen still images pro-vided by the veterans, this non-narrative documentary is meant to inspire others to understand why the greatest honor for the “Greatest Generation” is to never forget.

Hopefully through that process, they can record and preserve those memories and experiences for posterity, or consider contributing that story to the Veterans History Project, a project of the Ameri-can FolkLife Center at the Library of Congress.

Hailed by Yo-Yo Ma as the “ideal musician of the 21st Century”, Mike Block is a pioneering multi-style cellist, composer, and educator, acclaimed by the NY Times for his “vital rich-hued solo playing”. He has studied at the Juilliard School, joined Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble and Mark O’Connor’s Ap-palachia Waltz Trio, and toured extensively with Darol Anger’s Republic of Strings and The Knights orchestra. After becoming one of the first wave of cellists to adopt a strap in order to stand while playing, Mike was the first standing cellist to perform at Carnegie Hall. This winter he came to Peoria for an intimate,

high energy concert of classic and original compositions in front of an eager live audience in the WTVP Studio. Sound Bites with Peoria Symphony Orchestra “Mike block: one World Cello” premieres Friday, May 15 at 9:30 p.m. with an encore Wednesday, May 20 at 8 p.m. on WTVP WoRLD Channel 47.2.
