I have enjoyed my life in Tajikistan. Its people are awesome. One day we
went to visit a child on the outskirts of
the city. I visit those who have difficulty
getting to school (or whose family
member forbids it). This little girl can’t
walk, but is smart. We were told that she
was too heavy to carry, so they stopped
sending her. Even with wheelchairs,
there are many barriers to proper
education for the disabled. This is part
of life here; values are different. Children
need encouragement and strength to
face a society that says they can’t. But
parents need to realize that the fight is
worth it and their child is as important
as anyone else. My job helps me to
recognize not only the visibly disabled
but also the emotionally disabled. We all
are damaged in our own way; how we
pick ourselves up makes the outcome
different.
A little boy (with Down’s Syndrome)
I have been working with for over a
year has shown great improvement in
listening and comprehension skills. He
can now recognize over ten colours, say
five letters, count to five on his hands
and draw a straight line—small feats
perhaps, but these little achievements
are precious and should be celebrated.
I want the teachers I work with to
understand this.

TURKEY Creative Artists
Turkey/Afri-Asia Creative Outreach
(TACO) is looking for musicians, sound
technicians, artists, and those skilled in
drama, mime and puppets to join their
team ministering throughout the Near
and Middle East and Central Asia.
A training and language study
programme is offered as well.
Excellent opportunity for interns!
1–2 year term available immediately.
CENTRAL ASIAAgriculturalist
Village families barely make enough to
feed themselves through the winter.
Years of poor agricultural practices mean
the soil quality is decreasing. Many
farmers grow wheat or cotton year-after-
year to meet government quotas. They
are usually poorly paid.
Some are willing to experiment with
new crops or farming methods but need
advice and mentoring to try new things.
Our organization already has
pilot projects underway, including a
promising fruit drying project. However,
without agricultural specialists on
staff, the training and advice we can
offer is basic. 1–2 year term available
immediately.
NAMIBIADiscipleship training
Sit beside African brothers and sisters in
an intense discipleship course covering
topics such as: The Father Heart of
God, Identity and Destiny, Evangelism,
Communication Skills and Relationships.
Then put into practice what you’ve
learned. Ministries include community
development through practical work
like building projects and skills training;
ministering to communities with sports,
youth work, evangelizing, preaching,
serving the poor holistically and working
with the church in Africa.

Polio Rehabilitation Project
In 2010, Tajikistan experienced
an outbreak of polio that left 700
young people with paralysis. Today,
community-based rehabilitation support
rooms are being set up across the region
for affected children concurrent
with training medical, social and
educational departments of the
government, community leaders
and parents. Therapy equipment has
been provided by Operation Mercy.
Local authorities are committed to
provide staff to work with disabled
children.
As part of the project, Operation
Mercy is establishing and equipping
support rooms in strategic locations
for families with disabled children.
We want to model inclusion by
expanding a polio support room
to be an integrated kindergarten for
children affected by polio, cerebral palsy
and hearing loss where they will play and
learn alongside able-bodied children.
Offering hope to people with disabilities
Operation Mercy* has worked in the small,
landlocked nation of Tajikistan since 1993,
leading in providing model programs for early
intervention, rehabilitation and integration for
children suffering from disabilities, diabetes, or
paralysis caused by polio outbreaks. Orphans
and children from low- and no-income families
are also provided with aid.
This is a unique opportunity to express
the care and concern of Jesus to a nation.

Wheelchair Project
One major barrier to inclusion for Tajiks
with disabilities is that wheelchairs are
not readily available. The government-
imported chairs are one-size-fits-all,
often not fitted properly for children.
Little or no training
is provided with the
chair.
Operation Mercy
is establishing a
pilot wheelchair
workshop that
will assemble
customized
wheelchairs
and provide a
service package
including referral,
prescription,
distribution, fitting
and user training. The Ministry of Social
Protection is very interested in the
project.

Let us PRAY
Pray for yourself and those around you
to have courage to examine your passion
and commitment to God’s kingdom
mission. Are you open to change?
Pray for OMers, past and present, to
have deep lasting impact on their peers
as they challenge them in mission. Pray
that seed sown in faith will bear fruit
in God’s time. Pray for adjustments
whether entering new cultures or re-
integrating at home.
Pray the four mission options on p.8 and
many more will be fully recruited—and
include Canadians! What about yourself?
Pray for Operation Mercy in Tajikistan
and other places in Central Asia: for
protection physically and spiritually,
adequate funding for projects and
constant opportunities for tactful
witness to Christ.
Pray for Canadians Jonathan & Fiona
Thiessen and the work in Russia. Pray
that the team will be able to train
hundreds of Russians in mission in
the coming year. Pray for Victor to
stay strong and focussed and that his
testimony will impact thousands.
Pray that the many who came to Christ
during Canadian outreaches will be
integrated into good churches and that
there will be more churches ready to
host outreaches in 2013.
Pray that key staff positions in OM
Canada will be suitably filled soon.
Perhaps you are an answer to prayer?
Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is
plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of
the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his
harvest field.” (Matthew 9:38)
