In the last two years, the number of news and current events resources available through the library has vastly increased. The most recent improvement has been the significant upgrading of our America’s News online news product. It can now be found on our online databases page as Access World News. Access World News is a full-text news resource consisting of over 3,300+ local, regional, national and international sources (of which 1,400+ international sources). With this upgrade we now have access to a number of Kentucky Newspapers, including the London Sentinel-Echo, and newspapers in Corbin (Times-Tribune), Middlesboro, Harlan, Richmond and others. But the most significant change is the enhanced online version of the Lexington Herald-Leader. We recently were informed that the Herald-Leader would no longer have daily delivery service in our area, and a subscription by mail would mean a delay of a day or two. So we upgraded to Access World News and now all our patrons can access the newspaper anywhere. In addition to the access we had (1983-Current) we now have Lexington Herald-Leader Web Articles and Blogs. Most importantly we now have a page image version for recent issues. The page image interface takes a little getting used to, but it is much like reading the paper version – you can also download pages or selections to PDF. This expanded resource joins last year’s addition of ProQuest’s Global Newsstream. Global Newsstream enables users to search the most recent global news content – with archives that stretch back into the 1980s – from over 2,500 news sources including newspapers, newswires, news journals, television and radio transcripts, blogs, podcasts, and digital-only websites in full-text format. It incorporates the U.S. Newsstream, Canadian Newsstream, and International Newsstream databases. All titles are cross searchable on the ProQuest platform. Through ProQuest we also have the New York Times and NYT Historical collections with full text of the Times from 1851 to the present. If all this is not enough, we also have our longstanding Newspaper Source (EBSCO). Newspaper Source provides selected full-text for 25 national (U.S.) and international newspapers. The database also contains full-text television & radio news transcripts, and selected full-text for more than 260 regional (U.S.) newspapers. And finally, if you are looking for something a little different, check out ProQuest’s Alt-PressWatch. Alt-PressWatch includes full-text newspapers and magazines from alternative, independent presses, providing multidisciplinary resources for researchers seeking an alternative to mainstream media perspectives. www.quotefancy.com

From the Reference Desk Sean Jump

Vampires are everywhere, and there's certainly no shortage of reading material out there for undead aficionados to sink our teeth into. The following list is a snapshot of my personal favorites, ranging from acknowledged classics to more obscure pieces that I think are worthy of remembrance. And no, the omission of Interview With the Vampire and Salem's Lot is NOT an oversight. Carmilla. Sheridan Le Fanu's classic tale of a young girl haunted by an obsessed vampiress. Beautiful, lyrical, and deceptively eerie.

Dracula. The standard by which all vampire stories are measured. Though uneven and at times a bit slow, Dracula’s power remains undimmed.

Immanuel’s Veins. Terrifically atmospheric and terrifying novel that explores the true nature of the evil behind vampirism. Most vampire novels have an inherently Christian undercurrent, but Immanuel’s Veins brings the religious element to the forefront. Blood of the Impaler. The best "sequel" to Dracula yet written. Progeny of the Adder. One of the first novels to introduce the vampire as urban serial killer.

Bring on the Night. Interesting characters--including likeable heroes and a truly diabolical vampire--combine with taut suspense to make this little-known book one of the best of its kind.

The Pale Lady. This short novel rivals Carmilla in terms of atmosphere and gothic ambience, but features a more dynamic climax including an exciting sword fight between the hero and the vampire. 30 Days of Night. Movie tie-ins are often forgettable, but this time the novelization is even better than the film. The Fangs of Morning. Similar to the author's earlier and better known novel (see above), but stands on its own in terms of thrills and overall readability. I am Legend. The story of the last man on earth as he struggles to maintain his humanity in a sea of the undead.

The library provides a service to the faculty, staff, and students of Union College called Interlibrary Loan. Interlibrary Loan allows us to borrow materials from other libraries that we do not have in our collection. We can borrow items such as journal articles, books, and DVDs. Because the physical items such as books and DVDs must be shipped, you should plan accordingly. It can take a couple of weeks for us to receive the requested item.

Stop at the front desk or email [email protected] for more information. Interlibrary Loan

The library recently received a cookbook from the estate of an alumni member. The cookbook, Southern Sideboards, includes lots of great southern dishes. With pumpkin being a staple of the fall season, what could be better than a pumpkin cake recipe? This book is available for check-out from our Kentucky Appalachi-an Heritage collection. The call number is KAH 641.5975 S727 1978, if you’d like to take a look at it.
