Answer the following Questions: 1. What is your favorite movie, and which genre do you think this

movie fall under?

My favorite movie is Butterfly Circus, the genre targeted is Family and General Audiences as this movie does not constitute violence, foul language, or any form of unfavorable issues including nudity.

About Butterfly Circus

In the 1930s, America is suffering from the Great Depression. Many people are jobless and homeless, and everybody is sad and worried about the difficult economic situation. Mr. Mendez is the charismatic master of a small circus, the Butterfly Circus, and he leads his troupe through Southern California. Along the way, they perform – sometimes for free – to bring some light into the dull lives of people. One evening, they see a sign for a (traveling) carnival and a sideshowand stop to see a funfair with carousels, games, and other entertainment, including a freak show. Here Mr. Mendez meets Will, the main attraction, who has tetra-amelia syndrome, which means he has no limbs, and is on show as a freak of nature, alongside other odd characters such as a painted (tattoo)ed man and a bearded woman. Will is bitter and unhappy, but after meeting Mendez, he decides to leave the carnival and manages to hide on one of the Butterfly Circus trucks to escape. The people in the circus welcome Will, but Mr. Mendez tells him he must do something else than just be a freak to become part of the act. Will gets to know his new friends and learns that many of them have a sad past, but that Mr. Mendez has given them a second chance in life. One day Will accidentally realizes that he can swim, so he decides to perform a difficult act in the circus. He is raised to the top of a tall pole and dives into a small tank full of water. Will is now happy since he is in the show not because of his odd appearance but because of who he is and what he can do.

2. What do think is the premise of this movie?

What would happen if the man without arms and legs realized he could swim and walk? What happens if he decides to escape and find a better life even he’s at odds?

3. Explain the movie terms of the three act structure:

What is the point of attack/inciting incident?

The point of attack (also called the inciting incident) is when the protagonist of the story is prompted to change, and make a choice. It usually occurs halfway through Act I, around page 10 or so, and will drive the dramatic action for the rest of the movie. The point of attack is what forces the character(s) to go on a journey.

For example: In the movie The Hangover, the point of attack is when everyone wakes up in the trashed hotel room and realizes that Doug is missing.

What is the conflict that escalates all the way to the climax of the movie? Describe.

The most important piece of conflict is always the conflict between the main character’s success versus the failure of achieving their ultimate goal. The conflict begins when the armless person escapes and begins to explore other ways of personal escape for success but found that no one will give him success unless he puts in the effort to create his own unique talent at the circus.

The climax began when his friends could not find him at the river but actually he was struggling to learn to save himself and found that he has the strength to swim without leg and arms!

What is the final resolution in the movie? How does it end?

One day Will accidentally realizes that he can swim, so he decides to perform a difficult act in the circus. He is raised to the top of a tall pole and dives into a small tank full of water. Will is now happy since he is in the show not because of his odd appearance but because of who he is and what he can do.
