Each concert will be held one Sunday a month in Granville Park from May through September. These shows, free and open to the public, are a great way for local bands to perform for their community and treat us all with good, family-friendly entertainment. Past band performances have included sing-along beach tunes, bluegrass, jazz, and country, and we expect just as much variety and quality for the 2012 series. Our first performance of the summer will be Sunday, May 20, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. The May show will feature The Noted Artists, a band whose music features jazz and beach songs, along with favorites by Jimmy Buffet and Louis Armstrong. Please join us Sunday May 20 for an evening of music, community, and fun. We’d like to thank the Senior Class of Salem Baptist Christian School for picking up litter around West Salem including Broad Street, Washington Avenue and beyond. Your efforts to keep West Salem clean and beautiful are most appreciated. May we all be inspired to continue this important task of keeping our neighborhood litter free!

The West Salem Garden Club is

hard at work for its biennial West Salem Garden Tour on June 9th. We are excited to announce that

this year’s tour will feature Old Salem’s Miksch

Garden and House, which was the first home garden in Old Salem.

Since a large portion of West Salem was originally farmland for the Single Brothers in Old Salem, we

will be exploring our history together and

showcasing the evolution of home gardens as well as several community gardens in what is now an urban

environment.

Save the date-June 9th! We have a lot planned; you

won’t want to miss this one. If you’d like sponsorship

and tour information, check out our website: www.mywestsalem.com/Garden_Tour.html

Meet Myshale' Spigner. During the school year, Myshale' lives with her grandmother Irma Jackson who is a longtime West Salemite. Myshale is a sophomore at Parkland High School and has run track for the last six years. She began as a third grader running summer track with AAU, and her events have included the 60m, 100m, 200m, 300m and 400m dashes as well as relays for 4X100m, 4X200m and the 4X400m. Every year for the last 6 years Myshale' has made it to the AAU Jr. Olympics, a National summer event. During the summer of 2011, the event was held in New Orleans where she ran the 4X400m relay. The team had a qualifying time that allowed them to run in the finals. They finished 4th in the nation for intermediate girls aged 15 -16, with a relay time of 3:55:11. Myshale' currently runs on the winter indoor track and spring outdoor track team for Parkland High School. Her most recent accomplishment (as recognized in a previous newsletter as an Outstanding Achiever) was to qualify to run in the New Balance National Indoor Meet for High Schools in New York City. Though she did not win any medals at that meet, the team did very well for their first time in this arena, breaking school records. The girls' track team just celebrated a first place win at the Bill Hayes Invitational at WSSU on April 7th which included 13 other track teams from the state. Not only is Myshale' an athlete, she is also a good student. Her grade point average is 2.75.
