Mission: 9-1-1 DISPATCH CALLDo you know that if you’re ever in an emergency you can call

9-1-1 and a helpful police officer will come out right away to assist you? Emergencies can be scary, but it’s good to know that a friend, like Sheriff Hiya, is only a phone call away 24 hours a day. Helpee Heroes, let’s practice calling 9-1-1 so we’re ready in case there’s a real emergency.

OBJECTIVETo promote literacy and parts of speech by practicing a 9-1-1 dispatch call in this hilarious Mad Libs style activity.

MATERIALS

•HELPEE HERO HANDOUT: 9-1-1 DISPATCH CALL

DURATION•15 - 20 minutes

DIRECTIONS1. Review parts of speech with students:

•Noun: Person, place or thing (dog, car)

•Adjective: Describes a noun (pretty, smelly)

•Verb: Action (run, sing)

•Adverb: Describes a verb, usually ending in -LY (quickly, calmly)

2. Divide the class into small groups, or elect to play with the entire class at once.

3. Distribute the Helpee Hero Handout: 9-1-1 DISPATCH CALL.

4. If small groups, have a student be the designated DIS-PATCHER. This asks the others to call out a word (adjective, noun, etc.) DISPATCHER writes the work in the blank space.

5. When all the blank spaces are filled with words, each team reads their dispatch call to the class.
