Tip 3WRITE CONCISELY

EASY TRICK TO MAKE YOUR WRITING MORE CONCISE

Don’t use pronouns that have no noun referent (words such as “it” and “there” that don’t take the place of nouns)

Original: There is no reason for us to go.

Rewrite: We have no reason to go.

USE THE “REAL” VERB

Changing verbs into nouns adds unnecessary words!

“Consider” versus “take into consideration”

“Tends” versus “tendency to”

“Pressured” rather than “under pressure”

AVOID INTERPRETIVE WORDS

Words that can’t be (or aren’t) quantified

“small”

“large”

“very”

“relatively”

WORDS WITH SIMPLER EQUIVALENTS

In order to = to

In the event that = if

Utilize = use

On the other hand = however

TAKE AWAY Pronouns must take the

place of nouns

Use the real verb

Avoid interpretive words

Use simplest word or phrase possible
