such a way that it/they will be understood without too much effort on the part of the reader. Such writing will flow and the reader will find it accessible.
Good writing will accomplish the above as well as being interesting or even engaging to read.

activities Skill in reading is required to be an
effective writer When reading you need to be
aware of the style and approach the author is using and not just the story he or she is telling

Writing as a communication Writing offers an opportunity to communicate
facts, opinions, attitudes and emotions But before you can communicate you need to
decide what it is that you want to communicate and how you want to communicate it
So start out thinking about what your message is and how you can say it most effectively
Most of us communicate verbally a lot of the time …. and not so well at that! We do not often communicate in writing

Good writing is a craft Good writing is a craft type skill Craft type skills cannot be learnt
from text books – at least by most people
A lot of practice is required and much trial and error
Ultimately good writing call on the the authors creativity

Writing come naturally? Writing and particularly academic
writing does not come naturally to many people
Most people have to work hard at becoming a skilled academic writer
Expect it to take time and also expect to have to write and re-write paragraphs

First task - The Content The first task is to decide what you want
to say Make notes about the subject and
experiment with different ways of saying it
Lots of notes and lots of trials are often useful
You may have more than one message and if so list the different messages

Plan the paper Take time to understand your message Make sure you are stating your
message in clear and plain English Watch out for mistakes – typos,
spelling and grammar just a few of the possible mistakes
Know your audience Make it interesting for others to read

Be sure To understand the ‘question’ Only to write on topics about which
you have some knowledge Don’t try to bluff your way through
a paper If you are unsure of your facts
research them again until you know what you are talking about

Structure of writing Most written communications will
have a start, a middle and an end and they will be in that order
As a new author you will be well served to follow the above order
As an experienced author you may choose the order in which you wish to write
