Anticipatory Set

(3 min) The teacher will play a YouTube video

about nouns. This will be a review for

Susan about the importance and

components of nouns.

Objective

(1 min) The student will be able to demonstrate

how to properly capitalize nouns

Rationale

(1 min) Being able to properly capitalize nouns is

a basic and important component of

writing. It is the main structure in the

composition of a sentence

Input

(15 min) The teacher will instruct the class using a

PowerPoint to teach the rules of

capitalization. She will expect the students

to take notes and answer questions along

the way.

1. The first letter of every new sentence is capitalized.

Example: My mother is from Seoul.

My father grew up in Taegu.

2. The pronoun I is always capitalized.

Example: Robert and I are going to discuss the political situation.

3. Titles of people are only capitalized when they are followed by someone’s name.

Example: That is the president of the United States. That is President Bush.

4. Proper names of places, specific buildings, rivers, mountains, and other geographic locations are capitalized.

Example: A: That is a long river.

B: Yes, it is the Nile River

5. Proper names of people.

Example: This is my friend. Her name is Jennifer.

6. All proper names of: things, companies, religions, deities, and languages. Ex: Intel wants to hire people who speak Spanish and French. 7. Capitalize the days of the week, months, and holidays. Ex: Valentine’s Day is on Monday, February 14th. 8. Capitalize names of documents, organizations, clubs, and historical events. Ex: The Declaration of Independence made the king of England very angry. This eventually started the United States Revolutionary War. 9. Direction words (north, south, east, and west) should only be capitalized when they refer to a region or section of a country. Ex: The West offers lots of job opportunities. A: How do I get to the Moonlight Restaurant? B: Go west 3 blocks. It is on the right.

Modeling

(10 min) To model this lesson, the teacher will have

a paragraph written on the whiteboard

without any capital letters in it. She will

then proceed to work with the students

and correct the letters.

once upon a time, there was a queen. queen

cynthia lived in her castle in a faraway land

called shangutopia. shangutopia was

located in lufecaep valley near a large river

which was called the hula hula river. this

river provided the people with fresh water,

lots of fish, and large amounts of vegetables.

Checking for Understanding

(10 min)

The teacher will now provide the students with a paragraph to correct on their ipads. She will ask them to work with a partner. During this time the teacher will walk around the room and observe corrections made to the paragraph. The paragraphs will also be sent to the teacher electronically to look over

Guided Practice

As a group, we will discuss the errors in a particular paragraph. I will have the students go up to the smart board and correct one sentence each. We will discuss as a group whether they are right or wrong. If half of the students in the class have failed to understand the concept, then I will go back and reteach the lesson.

Independent Practice

(10 min)

The students will complete a worksheet. The worksheet will

have questions on capitalization and proper nouns. The

students will have to circle letters, rewrite sentences, and

underline words.

Closure

(1 min) The teacher will collect the worksheets

and go over them just for correct

answers. She will not give the students

a grade but credit for completing the

assignment

Evaluation of Objective

(15 min)

In order to see if the students have mastered the objective. The teacher will have them complete a quiz online. The scores will be sent to her email. She will record the scores in her grade book.

Use of Technology

The students will be using ipads during

the checking for understanding. The

paragraphs in which they are editing will

be sent to the teacher via dropbox.
