50 Standard Interview Questions Don't just read these questions—write down your answers, as if you were at the interview and then practice and rehearse the answers in advance. Don't let the employer interview be the first time you actually formulate an answer in spoken words. It is not enough to think about them in your head—practice! Sit down with a friend, a significant other, or your roommate and go through all of the questions. If you have not yet completed a mock interview, do it now. Make the most of every single interview opportunity by being fully prepared!

Ms. Joyce Denisenko (This is who you are writing your letter to)Cribs and Crayons Child Care Center1010 Brown St.West Columbia, SC 29167-7644

Dear Ms. Denisenko:

In response to your newspaper advertisement, I am writing to apply for the position of caretaker on the toddler floor. The enclosed resume will show you the experiences I have already had working with children.

Any place caring for children needs responsible and dependable employees. I not only enjoy children, but I realize what an important job child care is. Toddlers need a loving, safe environment, where they can learn and grow. Parents need to feel confident that caretakers will provide close supervision, creative activities, and nutritional food for their children. I am a person you and the parents could count on to provide consistent and excellent care to the children.

I would be happy to come in for an interview at any time. You can contact me at 517-739-0641 after 3:30 p.m. or by leaving a message on my family’s answering machine. Thank you for considering my application.

Sincerely,

Mitchell Corbin

Thank You Letter

You will write a thank you letter to serve as a follow-up to a job interview. It is considered proper etiquette to send a letter within the first three days of your interview to express your appreciation for the interview and the time they spent with you. A thank you can go a long way.

Thank You LetterYour application and resume have gotten you and interview and that interview went well! Rock on! That’s awesome! So, now what do you do? You wait in anticipation, as to whether or not you got the job. Right? Wrong! You follow up! Write them a thank you letter for their interest and their time. This should be done within a day or two of the interview. A good follow-up letter includes:

A thank you comment A statement confirming your interest in the job and what you have to offer them, as an employee,

with specific reference to the interview. A statement saying that you would be willing to answer further questions. Your phone number and the times you are available for calls.

Letters of Recommendation Write-upOnce you have decided and/or collected all three letters of recommendations, write a one paragraph description of EACH person who wrote you a letter.

Write-Up (format of your choice) – Describe each person who wrote you a letter (one paragraph minimum for each person). In describing a person who wrote you a letter you should talk about:

How you know the person How long you have known the person Why you asked the person to write you a letter What the person does for a living What qualities you see in that person.

Rationale for the write-up: If an employer goes on to read this he or she should be able to learn more about the person recommending you. Make sure that what they are learning makes the person a more credible reference! You may put all three descriptions on the same page, but in doing so you must make sure all three names are clearly visible (ex: in bold, underlined, etc.) and that the descriptions are separate from one another (example: several blank lines between your description for each person or a dark line between each description, etc.)

Requesting Letters of Recommendation and ReferencesIf you are interviewing for a job, you can expect that the potential employer will want to check your employment references before offering you a position. Employers usually check three references, so having at least that many prepared should be your goal. Ask for a letter of recommendation in person. This shows the person how serious you are and it results in a more effective recommendation letter. Anyone who writes you a letter of recommendations should be thanked. Be sure to extend your appreciation.

Good references are powerful and often have the potential to make you or break you so be selective when choosing your references or asking someone to write you a letter of recommendation. It is not uncommon for a candidate to lose out on a job offer because of an unexpected poor reference by a person they chose for a good recommendation. It is actually more common than you might think!

Be considerate when asking someone to write you a letter of recommendation by providing him or her sufficient time to write a letter of recommendation for you. If you have not had past employment a good sources to ask for references and letters of recommendation are acquaintances, neighbors, clergy members, teachers, coaches, a mentor, or someone outside of your family whom you have known a long time. You should ask at least one of the persons you listed as a reference at the bottom of your resume to write you a letter of recommendation. DO NOT have friends and family write letters for you, unless you work for them!

Mention specifics that you would like included in your letter of recommendation and provide your references with the information and materials they need to give you a good recommendation. Below is information you may give to someone who has questions about writing you a letter or recommendation. Note: I have provided you with copies of “Information for Writing Letters of Recommendation” and the “Example Letter” for easy distribution. These resources may be useful to the people writing letters for you.

Example Letter

May 5, 2005Dear Sir or Madam:

This is a letter of recommendation for Lindsay Cole. Lindsay has tutored my son in math for the past two years. Lindsay is a kind and responsible person. She gives careful attention to details and she has a pleasant personality that enables her to work well with people.

Lindsay has high standards for herself, which she displays through the goals she has set for herself. One day she hopes to own her own advertising business and it is my opinion that she is not only capable of doing so, but that she will succeed in doing so. Lindsay is creative, and the quality of her work, whatever it may be for, is always done at her best potential.

From the time I have observed Lindsay tutor my son and some of the other kids in the neighborhood I have learned that Lindsay has the ability to manage people, time, and a number of tasks efficiently. She is able to do this in a calm and friendly manner. Lindsay is also able to work cooperatively with other people and she can be trusted with confidential information. Lindsay is privy to personal information about my son and she has gained our trust and respect.

I believe that Lindsay possess many talents, talents that would enable her to work within a variety of professional settings.
