In September 2012 the Jack Studio Theatre invitedplaywrights with a connection to south east London tosubmit unperformed plays to the theatre.The three plays which form our season were drawn fromthese submissions.

MARTIN MCNAMARA (The Magic Hour) is a freelancejournalist and producer who has worked for nationalnewspapers, magazines, Associated Press TV and BBCRadio 4. He won a screenwriting bursary from the BBCand had a short play performed at The Soho Theatre.Martin was brought up in Camberwell.

VINAY PATEL (Bump) studied writing at the Royal CentralSchool of Speech and Drama. He has had work performedat Theatre 503, the Bush, the NYT, the White Bear andRich Mix, as well as winning competitions held by the BBCand Shine Drama. Vinay was born in Sidcup and grew upin Bexley.

MELANIE PENNANT (No Rhyme) is studying for an MA inScreenwriting at the London College of Communication. In2011 she won the International Student Film Organizationcompetition with her screenplay Hit and Run. No Rhyme isMelanie's debut play. Melanie lives in Lewisham whereshe looks after her two young children.

Dennis O’Neill has died, and his family gather at thehospital as the priest prays for his soul. Whilst twosons try to remember how to mourn the dead, anolder generation evokes the remorse and sense ofloss of unwilling migrants from an indifferent Ireland.The Magic Hour is a darkly comic family drama setin a waiting room of a London hospital.

“He loved a good funeral. He would go to thefunerals of people he didn’t know.He used to rate them. Mostly it was about howgenerous they were with the drink and how muchsinging there was. He always said the English didn’tknow how to die.”

After ten years apart, Dan and Jayesh run into eachother in the maternity ward of their hometownhospital. They share an anxious night as they waitfor their partners to give birth. But as the old schoolfriends reconnect, it becomes clear that the pastthey shared was not as straightforward as itseemed, and that they and their families face a verydifferent future.

“It's always gonna say Dartford on her birthcertificate though. Can't ever change that."

Please join us in our writing workshops if you want totry out something new, or if you have an idea you wantto develop.

1. Synopsis SurgeryGet it right before you write! This workshop is about honinga workable blueprint for your play. Pitch and kick ideasaround and get feedback from group discussion to moveyour play forward.Saturday 11 May 2–4pm (12 participants max)

2. Creating CharactersCome and find challenging new ways of creating threedimensional characters for your play. Through groupexercises we will invent characters with lives of their own,discover their needs, their environment and the startingpoints for a play scenario.Saturday 18 May 2–4pm (16 participants max)

3. Writing for OneEver wanted to create your own one person show but didn'tknow where to start? This workshop gives you the tools tofind the essence of your stage persona and differentapproaches to how to best tell your own story on stage.Saturday 25 May 2–4pm (12 participants max)
