Choosing an event

● Select something that interests you● Find a partner● Think about what you already know--will this

event help you build on that knowledge?● Look at your calendar--some events require

more building and preparation time than others--select one that fits your schedule

● �A team of 2● �Build a wood and glue structure that will

attach to a vertical testing wall and hold the weight at a distance from the wall

● �Goggles will be provided and the testing apparatus

● �Scored by highest Efficiency Score which equals—Load Scored (g)/Mass of boomilever (g)

Experimental Design

● �Team of up to 3 students● �The team will design, conduct and report

the findings of an experiment during the competition

● �Rubric is provided for scoring

● �Team of up to 2● �Construct and test a free flight rubber-

powered helicopter● �Must be 3 grams or more● �A flat balsa wood disc, large enough to

cover a dime, must be the upper most part of the helicopter

Metric Mastery

A team of 2 will estimate andthen measure objects in metricunits.The properties to be measured may include mass, volume, density, area, force, distance, time and temperature.

● A team of up to 2● Teams design and build a robot capable of

performing certain tasks on a playing field provided at competition.

● Sample tasks, move: legos, AA batteries, ping-pong balls, tennis ball

Rocks and Minerals

Rocks and Minerals

● �A team of up to 2, will show knowledge of rocks & minerals by completing tasks at different stations.

● �Identification and answering questions about classification, properties and the rock cycle are the types of tasks

● �Students will need to prepare a three ring binder to bring to the event. Field guides are not required at Wredling and hand lens will be provided if needed.

Sounds of Music

○ A team of up to 2 will build two instruments, of any kind, based on a 12 tone tempered scale,○ They will perform a major scale,

a required melody and achosen melody with each instrument

Wheeled Vehicle

● A team of 2 will design, build and test one vehicle that uses a non-metallic, elastic material as its sole means of propulsion.

● The vehicle should travel a distance between 7 and 11 meters as quickly and accurately as possible.

Road Scholar

○ �A team of up to 2 will respond to interpretative questions on state, internet or atlas maps and USGS topographic maps, or satellite images

○ �For the WREDLING event students are asked to bring a binder of notes

that they prepare and a calculator. (Protractors, rulers, symbol sheets and maps will be provided)

6/7th grade only Write It, Do It

○ �A team of 2 will effectively communicate with a colleague in writing by having their partner construct a device from this written description.

○ The task may involve Legos, pipe cleaners, straws, and other kitchen type items, Lincoln logs,

Knex, etc.

6/7th grade only Mystery Architecture

○ A team of 2 will build at the competition with the materials given.

○ Students will have a limited about of time and supplies to complete the task. Sample tasks could include making a bridge or tower to hold something or reach a certain length.

○○ This is a Wredling only event and not on

the national list for team competition .
