COLONIALISM
exploitation by a stronger country of weaker one; the use of the weaker country's resources to strengthen and enrich the stronger country
Name a colony
Who ‘colonised’ it?
Is the country better or worse off through of being colonised? Explain your answer.
COLONIALISM CONTINUED
Colonialism normally refers to a period of history from the 15th to the 20th century when people from Europe established colonies on other continents. The reasons for the practice of colonialism at this time include:
1. The profits to be made.2. To expand the power of the ‘homeland’.3. To convert the indigenous population to the
colonists' religion.4. To escape persecution in the ‘homeland’.
THE COLONISATION / SCRAMBLE FOR AFRICA
The Scramble for Africa resulted in occupation and annexation of African territory by European powers between the 1880s and the First World War in 1914.
As a result of the heightened tension between European states in the last quarter of the 19th century, the partitioning of Africa may be seen as a way for the Europeans to eliminate the threat of a European-wide war over Africa.

AVATAR AND TRIBALISM
IDEAS ABOUT TRIBALISM IN WRCG Tribalism in its almost infinite variations has been in the
minds of man for perhaps a hundred thousand years. We could argue that tribalism has held man back for
that span of time or… We could argue that tribalism actually best served
man's intellect and ability for that span of time until man was 'ready’ to move on.
Tribalism (in any form outside civilization) was not born from man's mind, but rather from his environmental instinct (like other animals) and like it or not, it served man's animal survival through the test of time.
“The birth of capitalism has broken free man's mind only for those that have taken the time to understand it.” (controversial statement)
AGRICULTURE
AGRICULTURE
is the production of food and goods through farming.
Agriculture in Botswana is practiced primarily to feed the country, rather than for export.
However, agricultural production is not sufficient to meet domestic demand.
Though the majority of people in Botswana practice agriculture (80 percent), it contributes only 4 percent to GDP and accounts for only 15.6 percent of formal employment.
Environmental factors have determined the kinds of crops and animals that can be raised in the country.
Much of Botswana is part of the Kalahari Desert, with a dry and drought-prone climate. The primary crops are corn and wheat, which are grown in the wetter eastern parts of the country.
The drier parts of Botswana are suitable for non-intensive cattle raising, similar to the western United States. Botswana's only important agricultural exports are meat and animal hides.
AGRICULTURE IN WRCG
When Rain Clouds Gather is based on a famous agricultural project at the Bamangwato Development Farm, the farm Head lived on for fifteen years as a refugee when she arrived in Botswana in 1966.
In Botswana, the sandy, saline soil is considered unsuitable for agriculture. Because there is little rainfall, it was considered an ideal place for an agricultural project in which many of the climatic conditions could be controlled through irrigation.
The novel tells the story of an English scientist (Gilbert) trying to work with the traditions of Botswana and the resistance to an agricultural program.
Much of the scientist's work is accomplished through the South African refugees then thought of as a burden to many of the people of Botswana, who are known as Batswana.
