Waste and Resource Management
• Technical support in developing sampling / testing protocols and best practice guidance documents to support mechanical biological
treatment (MBT) plant monitoring, landfill methane emissions modelling (using GasSim), hazard assessments for recycling of
thermal treatment residues and management of complex characterisation programmes (Environment Agency, trade associations).
• Characterisation of wastes to provide an evidence base on the composition, leachability and biodegradability of the new generation
of inorganic and organic treatment residues (Defra).
• Quantification of the agronomic benefits and environmental impacts of wastes applied to land, including composts, anaerobic
digestates and industrial waste residues (Defra).
• Assessment of the importance of carbon and nitrogen ratios of municipal and commercial composting feedstock in effective process
performance and odour management (SNIFFER).
• Assessing the impact of different waste treatment processes on biodegradability characteristics and biogas production
potential (waste management companies).
• Waste technical briefs for Defra policy readership on six areas including emissions from organic waste treatment and leachability of
organic wastes applied to land (Defra).
• Waste management options appraisal for oil industry wastes. Process selection criteria included security, robustness, resource
depletion, energy consumption, hazard reduction and cost (Oil and Gas Company).
Waste Testing
• Monitoring of waste treatment facilities(MBT, material recovery (MRF), thermal treatment, composting and anaerobic digestion) to
assess material flows, waste composition, waste biodegradability / other characteristics, hazardous properties, environmental
risks and landfill acceptance of various wastes and products (commercial clients, trade bodies).
• Batch and continuous digestibility trials of multiple and variable feedstock for characterisation, rate predictions and quality
assurance on input feedstock; to optimise biogas yield and biosolids quality from various digestion systems; and to evaluate the
impact and risks from processing (commercial clients).
• Environmental compliance monitoring of treatment residues (commercial clients).
Anaerobic Digestion
• Odour assessment (using dispersion modelling techniques) for various operations including wastewater treatment works
incorporating anaerobic digestion, combined heat and power (CHP), raw sludge thickening and dewatering digested sludge
(wastewater utilities).
• Assessment of odours associated with sludge products and the development of procedures for predicting odour emission rates from
the storing, processing and moving of sludge products (Multiclient).

• Assessment of the options for handling, treatment and disposal of the liquid /sludge waste streams and the identification of any
requirements to ensure compliance with international standards and assure the security of the disposal of these streams
(commercial clients).
• Technical evaluation and market research on novel anaerobic digestion or other wastewater treatment processes (wastewater
utility).
• On-going development and revisions to the Carbon Accounting Workbook for estimating operational GHG emissions (UKWIR / The
Carbon Trust / Water UK).
• Development of software tools to estimate capital and operating costs including carbon emissions for construction and operating
facilities, life cycle analysis of sludge treatment and recycling networks including gaseous emissions (MASTAR) (UK water and
wastewater utilities).
Environmental Risk Management
• Quantitative and qualitative risk assessments including: the relative impacts of waste applied to land under paragraph 7 exemptions
(Defra); probabilistic modelling and quantitative risk assessment of plant pathogens (commercial client); Bioaerosol risk assessment
for composting in windrows (SEPA).
• Health risk assessments of acute and chronic exposure to landfill gases and particulates (SEPA).
• Preliminary environmental and human health risk assessments for a range of waste streams using existing data to support waste
protocols projects (Environment Agency).
• Preparation of REACH registration documentation, development of exposure scenarios and assessments of risks to human health
and the environment (air, water, waste) (commercial clients).
• Life Cycle Analysis of the practicalities and impacts of using short rotation coppice to provide effluent polishing and biomass crops
for energy production (EU LIFE/Environment Agency).
• Review and development of targeted, risk-based approaches to inspection and compliance assessment (SNIFFER).
Sampling, Surveys and Data Management
• Data evaluation and statistical analysis-based projects e.g. Scottish Food Waste Analysis (2009); expert analysis for 'Down the
Drain' (2009), PAS100 review: data analysis and testing (2009); and Home Composting Diversion Modelling (2008) (WRAP).
• Sampling and survey methodology design and data evaluation e.g. sampling framework for the Welsh 2007 Industrial and
Commercial (I&C) waste survey; an interactive reporting database for I&C waste statistics; Asset Data Quality Management
Framework and Standards (Environment Agency Wales and water utilities).
• Water Framework Directive reporting including management of electronic submissions made by all Member States through WISE
(Water Information System for Environment) and developing the website for data collection and analysis (European Commission).
• Statistical assessment of waste arisings and treatment data with provision of user-friendly outputs to support the European
Commission's dissemination programme (Environment Agency).
