THIS MONTH

GB CALL UPRowing star Matt Gotrel has been invited to

train with the National Squad this winter.

Since taking up the sport in 2009, Matt has

gone from strength to strength competing

for Loughborough University and Nottingham

Rowing Club to medal at a range of events

including the British Championships and the

BUCS Regatta. His recent successes have got

him noticed and the GB training programme

which will take place in Caversham this winter

sees Matt move one stroke closer to becoming

a part of future teams that will compete at the

World Cup, World Championship and Olympics.

Congratulations and the best of luck to Matt!

NETBALL DOWN-UNDERCurrent students Sophia Candappa and Jodie

Gibson have kicked off the winter netball

season in a different way. Having both already

been selected for the England U21 squad to

compete at the World Youth Championships in

Glasgow in 2013, the girls are currently touring

Australia and New Zealand for the Quad Series.

With the Australian leg of the tour complete,

with losses to Australia and New Zealand and a

victory over South Africa, the girls are gearing

up to re-meet all three squads in New Zealand

over the coming weeks. Best of luck girls!

HONORARY LIFE MEMBERSHIP FOR LIV MURPHYFormer England captain and current

Loughborough Lightening coach, Olivia Murphy

has recently been awarded honorary life

membership to England Netball. The award

was presented at a recent test match in

Birmingham between England and Jamaica by

Janet Wrighton MBE. Awarded in recognition

of ‘her significant contribution to the sport as

a player and a coach’, the award signifies that

Liv is an ambassador for netball as well as an

outstanding role model.

ENGLAND REACH THE FINAL OF ICC WOMEN’S WORLD TWENTY20 TOURNAMENTA collection of Loughborough graduates,

current students and a Loughborough college

student narrowly missed out on glory in Sri

Lanka in the final of the ICC Women’s World

Twenty20 tournament. Having powered through

the group stages winning all three of their

group games, the girls faced New Zealand

in the semis. Winning with 94/3 (17.2 overs)

compared to New Zealand’s 93/8 (20 overs),

the girls were set to take on Australia who they

had beaten in the group stages. The match was

tough, with captain Charlotte Edwards blaming

a ‘lack of discipline’ for the four run loss to the

Ozzies. Although a disappointing end, the squad

were remarkable and current Loughborough

student Anya Shrubsole was a particular star,

claiming 2 wickets for 32 runs against Australia

in the group stages.

As this issue of

WOW goes to

print, the kick-off

of the IMS 2012/13

season is very much

underway. Tug-of-

war saw a powerful

performance from

the victorious Rigg-

Rutt, giving them a great start to the season

but the opportunities for points has only just

begun. Many of the league matches have also

commenced with netball and hockey being just

two of the sports that have already seen some

action.

Many of the freshers will be introduced to

some of the traditional rivalries between halls

that not only adds, but defines the competitive

intensity of IMS. October’s sing-off was a

chance to test the competitive waters of the

other halls. IMS provides the opportunity to

battle out those rivalries on an array of sporting

grounds, truly testing the talent and strength

for the chance to be crowned champions. Last

year’s IMS winners, Faraday, will be looking to

repeat their overall victory, while the other halls

will be doing their best to dismantle Faraday’s

dominance.

IMS offers a total of 29 sports for students both

in halls and living in town to take part in. With

some single-sex leagues and some mixed one-

day events, there’s an array of chances to get

involved. If you are interested, speak to your

Sport Secs and make sure you keep up to date

Loughborough Students Rowing Club has had one of the best summers in memory. Current students and alumni combined forces to take on BUCS, break records at Henley Royal Regatta and race at the U23 World Championships. To suggest the club is proud would be an understatement.

BUCS finals showcased unyielding strength across

LSRC. Loughborough Sportsman of the Year,

Jonny Walton, dealt with the choppy Holme

Pierrepont course with style, claiming gold in the

Championship Single Sculls.

LSRC members filled three of the six lanes in the

Intermediate Singles. Ed Couldwell and Matt Gotrel

instantly set the pace, winning gold and silver

respectively while Chris Baker came in sixth. Alex

Evangelidis stormed to gold in his first ever BUCS

event in the Intermediate Lightweight Single Sculls.

The women’s team, encouraged by the success of

the men the day before, shaped another exciting

day on the water. Pippa Whittaker easily won her

Championship Single Sculls and the senior eight

also stepped up to the plate.

Women’s Captain, Ruth McKellar, expressed how

“After a challenging year struggling for boats,

the senior girls eight had a really good weekend.

After coming second in our heat we were into the

repêchage... We narrowly came third putting us

into the final. Since we began the day just aiming

to get into the reps, we were really happy to get

into the final regardless of the overall result…

We really enjoyed our BUCS experience and look

forward to many more in the coming years.”

Shortly after, the men were back on the water

in their pairs. Couldwell and Baker won the

Intermediate Double Sculls and Gotrel and Walton

won the Championship Double Sculls by a nail

biting 0.13 seconds. By day three, not only had the IN O

club already exceeded expectations, but chances of

more medals arriving remained. Jonny Nash dealt

with the pressure of his first BUCS with flair; bringing

home silver in the Beginners Single Sculls, proving

the club will retain the ability to bring home success

in years to come. Craig Turner and Rich Watton won

gold in the Lightweight Double Sculls, which was

quickly followed by the Championship Quadruple

Sculls where Craig, Ed, Jonny and Matt came in

second.

With seven gold’s and three silvers, the weekend

was undoubtedly one of the most successful BUCS

events ever for LSRC who topped the medal table

for the very first time.

Matt Gotrel and Rich Watton made history at

this summer’s Henley Royal Regatta by being the

first Loughborough students to win at the world-

renowned event. Matt and Rich were part of the

Nottingham Rowing Club A boat with Loughborough graduate Pete

Muhley, and Nottingham RC member Ed Mace.

After a tough draw, the five days leading up to the final saw exciting

victories with the boys outclassing 32 other crews to win the Wyfolds.

On the final day, members of LSRC and Nottingham RC combined vocal

forces on the riverbank to help cheer the crew to victory. At the half

way marker the boys were trailing, but with the help of the roar of the

enclosures at the end of the course, they managed to row through their

Australian rivals and secure a stunning victory by two lengths.

LSRC colours flashed past the riverbank frequently over the five-day

regatta. Ed Couldwell joined the Great British M4x in the Prince of Wales

Quadruple Sculls, beating New Zealand in the semi but unfortunately

losing to Leander in the final.

Craig Turner and Alex Evangelidis were part of the Nottingham B crew

that made it through to the Friday, but unfortunately were beaten by

the Australian crew that went on to compete in the final, and with Jonny

Walton also competing, LSRC spectators constantly had reason to cheer.

This year the British Championships were greeted by less than ideal

weather conditions, promising a turbulent three days of racing.

Pippa Whittaker, rowing in Nottingham RC lycra, cruised through the

heats of the Single Sculls, easily making it into Sunday’s final where

she dominated to take home the victory. Whittaker faced tougher

competition in the World University Championships at the end of the

summer, where she achieved a sixth place finish in the Double Sculls.

As English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish oarsmen gathered in Cardiff bay a

week later for the Home Countries competition, Richard Watton, Peter

Dean, Peter Mulhey and Ed Mace presented a formidable crew. Rowing

in the Coxless Four, they started strong but unfortunately were hit by

wash and had to stop rowing. Joining another club, the boys competed in

the eight, producing a good race but proving unable to defeat the Welsh

force.

As the summer progressed, Jonny Walton was part of the GB Team

who flew to Italy for the 2012 European Rowing Championships.

The development crews continued the success of their Olympic and

Paralympic teammates, securing the best-ever haul of five medals. Jonny

and his GB crew-mates narrowly missed out on a place in the top six

in the men’s Quadruple Scull, but won their ‘B’ race to finish seventh

overall. Matt Gotrel, as part of the eight, made it to the final via the

repêchage, eliminating Russia along the way. In a very close race, GB

finished fifth in the ‘A’ final.

Overall LSRC’s summer will go down in the club’s history books and will

be talked about for years to come. The club is looking forward to what

the future has to offer and hopes this year’s freshers will step up to the

plate and see what they can achieve too!

JAMELL ANDERSONSHOOTINGFOR RIOLoughborough student Jamell Anderson has had a successful basketball career so far. He currently plays for both Loughborough and BBL side Leicester Riders. With his eye on Rio, WOW caught up with Jamell for a chat.

You started playing in high school, when did you

realise or were you told that you had potential to go a

lot further?

When I was in school, my teacher who was also the

basketball coach was from America so he knew a lot

about the sport. He saw the potential and told me

that if I learnt the basics at that level and took that on

board then I could do well. From then on I thought I

would work hard and see how far I could go.

What is it about basketball that you love so much?

Why basketball?

There are loads of things I love about basketball; the

fact that it is a team game and I am a team kind of

person; how fast the game is played, the speed and

the fact that everyone on the court can score. There

is a lot of heart in basketball. It comes down to grit

and how hard you want to work and if that suits your

personality.

Your heart defect, how did that affect you when you

found out? Was there a moment where you thought

your basketball career was over?

Yeah, when I found out it was obviously a huge

shock. I had no idea that I had anything like that and

I did think that it was over and I would have to quit

basketball. I was told by the doctor that I had three

options. He said I could quit basketball and I would

be fine for the rest of my life, I wouldn’t need an

operation or medication or anything like that. Or I

could take tablets every day for the rest of my life,

or there was the option of an operation. My mum

stepped in there and I tried the pills. They didn’t work

but it didn’t deter me in any way. I was desperate

to play basketball and I was really enjoying it so the

operation was the best option to take. I think that it

affected my family more than me, they were obviously

upset and even more so because it was the first time

I’d been to hospital for anything and it was a pretty

big deal.

Was that the hardest part of your career so far or have

you had other lows?

That’s definitely been the biggest challenge. People

that know me noticed the difference in me after that. I

was unbreakable. It built up a lot of strength in me on

and off the court, I kind of became fixed in my goals

and how important basketball was to me.

What has been the highlight of your sporting career

so far?

Definitely being selected for U20s Great Britain. The

first time I played and seeing my name on the top…

It was huge. Before then basketball was more of a

dream. I was training all the time and the club was well

organised but in terms of success, I hadn’t had any.

As soon as I made GB it became real. I thought ‘I can

actually do this now..’ I wouldn’t say I was motivated

diagnosed with a rare heart defect

called Wolff-Parkinson-White

Syndrome (WPW) which affects

between 0.1% and 0.3% of the

population. Jamell recovered from

two heart operations and went on

to represent Great Britain at U20

and England. He captained

Loughborough’s BUCS side to glory

last year and will be hoping for a

successful season with both them

more by the experience, it kind of just made it more real. More recently,

it would be going to the finals with Leicester Riders last year.

Has being at Loughborough Uni helped you significantly with your

sporting aspirations and if so, why?

Definitely. I wouldn’t just say that, it really has. From the way they set

everything up to the world-class gym. Everyone here supports you. Any

staff member you speak to is willing to help you, they really go all out.

Since I’ve been here I’ve just had no stress. The little things are always

sorted so you can just get on with what you’re supposed to.

What does your current training and playing regime entail?

Well, I’m in the gym three times a week. I work on a lot of conditioning

for my knees and back. A lot of basketball-orientated movements and

good flexibility all over. I’m improving the areas the GB told me to,

including upper body strength. I often play three games a week; one on

a Wednesday for Loughborough University and two on the weekends

for Leicester Riders. I train every day and twice on a Monday and a

Tuesday.

From your position now, what would be your ultimate goal?

Rio in 2016 is my biggest goal at the minute, it’s what I am keeping

my eye on definitely. A National Coaching System called T16 has been

established which I am part of. It takes players a tiny bit older and

younger and prepares them for Rio by training them and putting them

in a good position to get picked.

What advice would you have for any aspiring basketball players or

sports people in general if they want to make it as far as you have?

Well I guess, before I got selected for GB it was more of a dream. I kept

focused on it. In my mind it was just a matter of time. The only reason

I made the team was because of my effort, how hard I worked and

they could see that. If you work hard and show you work hard the rest

sorts itself out. I just want to say thanks for Loughborough University

and Loughborough College, Bob Jarun and Leicester Riders for all their

support. Also, to TASS (Talented Athletes Support Scheme) and friends

and family for their support.

Thanks Jamell, WoW wish you the best of luck for the season and we’ll

keep an eye out for you in Rio!

With the support of the Loughborough’s Sports Development Centre and the University’s Business School, the Loughborough Basketball Programme has recently been joined by Mackenzie Westcott from Bradley University for the upcoming academic year. Following a strong American colligate career competing against some of the nation’s elite teams such as Louisville and Butler, Westcott joins Head Coach Matthew Harber within the Division 1 National League squad. Mackenzie will undoubtedly add depth at the guard spot and an elite competitive intensity. Coach Harber commented on the decision to sign Westcott this summer. “Mackenzie is of a very strong basketball pedigree and it didn’t take me

very long to realise that she would be perfect for our programme. I’m

confident that Mackenzie will add a lot of value to our programme and

offer advice and guidance to our younger players.”

Mackenzie is keen to get the season underway now that she has settled

into the schedule here.“My first impression of Loughborough is the

campus is HUGE, I did my undergraduate studies in the states at a much

smaller university. Basketball at Loughborough seems to be on the rise

and I’m happy to be a part of the success here. It’s obvious to me the

staff here are determined to make both the basketball program and all

other Loughborough activities engaging, instructive and successful.

“I’m incredibly excited to play in the UK because I know Loughborough

has a great athletics tradition. Playing overseas has always been a

goal of mine and I’m grateful the staff here and in Leicester have

given me the chance to further my career and abilities by joining their

programme.”

As well as competing at the highest level for Women in the UK and

studying for a MSc in Finance and Management, Mackenzie has

www.lufbra.net/WOW 9

committed to giving back to the Loughborough programme and has been

appointed as the Head Coach of the Student Riders’ Second team.

“At Loughborough, they are dedicated to improving the player’s basketball

savvy while also making strides in their personal improvement. From being

around basketball since I was in fourth grade, I think I will be able to teach

these girls from my own observations and experiences. It’s good to bring

people in from the outside to help give a new perspective.”

Coach Harber is excited to have Mackenzie on board the coaching

staff for the upcoming season and is looking forward to promoting her

development as a coach.

“Our decision to have Mackenzie join our coaching staff this year has

worked out really well. Her schedule allows her to train and play for

our top team and have the time to work with our younger and less

experienced players as the Head Coach our Division Two National League

team. She is a great role model for all of our student-athletes and it’s

so refreshing to see someone like Mackenzie giving back to our club and

offering a positive experience to the players who she works with.”

THEBIG MATCH

As the squads filed out onto the floodlit home ground, Loughborough looked powerful and strong. The purple and white was a strong contrast to United’s red and white strip. As the 2,000-strong crowd gathered on the crisp October evening, the boys prepared themselves for Loughborough’s biggest Big Match football fixture to date.

Future football star Ben Pearson displayed

some quality footwork as United weaved

the ball through the Loughborough players,

allowing Pearson opportunity to quickly slot

the ball away and give the visitors an early

lead. The Loughborough force tried not to let

the early goal deter them, displaying some

long balls and applying some pressure that

kept United within their own half for a while.

However, the opposition took full advantage

of some confusion within the Loughborough

defence with James Weir scoring a second

goal for the Red Devils. Free kicks and short-

lived breaks frequented the first half as a

rapid pace was established.

A controversial tackle on the side-lines and

a corner awarded to Loughborough minutes

later roused great cheers and some chanting

from around the stands. However, they were

unable to score and a quick getaway and

some superb skill from United led to Mats

Daehli putting away a third goal from the

visitors. Within eight minutes, Pearson was

back and managed to replicate his earlier

success giving United a four goal lead.

Trying not to let their heads drop,

Loughborough strung a sold succession

of passes together and slowly moved

the ball into United’s final third. Safe play

was interspersed with fiery moments of

sporting inspiration as both teams took the

opportunities of breaks. No. 2, David ‘Tino’

Tarawali made an impressive move down

the right wing but was not

met by a decent ball. The

half-time whistle blew and the

boys made their way to the

changing rooms 4-0 down but

with a lot left to play for.

Loughborough re-emerged

looking revitalised and

boosted. The home crowd

had filtered down to United’s

defending end to maximise

support. A stronger start to the

second half lifted the crowd

as the Loughborough boys

showed improved movement

and a stronger presence on

the ball. However, Manchester

United were rewarded a free

kick and in the seventh minute

of the second half, United’s

tally moved up to five as

Andreas Periera scored.

The Loughborough boys retaliated quickly

with a shot on target that unfortunately

didn’t convert to a goal. Shortly after

Loughborough made three substitutions with

Emmerson, Matusiak and Howard replacing

Lowton, Tarawali and Webb. Hopefully the

fresh legs will bring Loughborough a change

of form. Within a minute, United reinstate

their dominance with No. 5, McNair taking

the score up to 6-0.

The boys in purple soon gave the crowd a

reason to cheer as a free kick was taken

by Daniel Nti and nicely finds its way past

United’s goalkeeper to give Loughborough

their first goal of the match. A definite boost

in confidence could be seen in the home side

following Nti’s goal. Attacking formations and

smooth switches showed the crowd a very

different Loughborough side and utterances

of a possible comeback fluttered around

the crowds. Their hard work and enhanced

morale invited Emmerson to take a shot on

goal which unfortunately, didn’t make a mark

on the score sheet.

Loughborough’s No. 18 Sam Cook would

have better look in the final folds of the

game. Following calls for a penalty from

the United players, Loughborough knew

they only had minutes to go and were

determined not to let United add to their

plethora of goals. The ball was moved quickly

into United’s defending half and it would

be Loughborough’s Sam Cook who would

deliver the last goal of the match.

Moments later the final whistle blew and the

boys were left defeated but not disgraced as

United took the victory with a final score of

6-2. A great display of sporting talent from

both sides, the Big Match season is most

definitely upon us.
