    makes use of large, open spaces and minimizes the

    use of small, enclosed rooms like private ofces. It

    can also be refered to as Benching.

    SlatwallA Slatwallis a type shelf, often part of a panel

    system. It looks like a wall with a series of

    horizontal grooves dug into it at regular intervals.

    Various storage tools can be attached to the

    slatwall by sliding them in from the sides.

    Slatwalls are also known as Wall Tracksormore genericallyPaper Management.

    Return & L DeskA Returnis a work surface that is perpendicular

    to the main work surface or desk. A desk with a

    return can also be refered to as an L Desk.

    Bridge & U DeskA Bridgeis a worksurface that is attached between

    a desk and a credenza to form a U shape so that the

    user is sitting in a form of cockpit with writing space

    virtually surrounding them. A conguration like this is

    also refered to as a U Deskor simple a U.

    PeninsulaA Peninsulais a type of desk that doesnt have any

    drawers. It is like a table top rounded on the end with

    a metal colum under the rounded end for support.

    Using a peninsula with a desk and a bridge can also

    create a U Shape conguration and an L Desk can

    be made with a desk and a peninsula.

    pedestalA Pedestal is a small le cabinet that ts under a

    work surface. It is commonly refered simply as a Ped.

    A Box Draweris the smaller drawer at the top of a ped. It is called a box drawer because it was

    designed to store boxes of staples, paper clips, rubber bands, and other ofce supplies.

    A File Draweris the larger drawer in a ped. It is usually the bottom drawer. Normally, they are

    designed to le letter size documents front to back and legal document side to side.

    They generally come in two different congurations:

    ABox/Box/File (Left) or a File/File (Right). They can also be

    called a 6/6/12 or a 12/12, respectively, which denotes the height of

    each drawer in inches.

    pedestalA Full Height Pedestalextends

    fully to the oor and is connected to the

    workstation and helps support it.

    A Hanging Pedestal(also known

    as a 3/4 Pedestal) is a ped that is

    suspended from the worksurface.

    It is almost always a single 6/12 box

    drawer and a le drawer.

    There are also Mobile Pedestals

    and they are separate from the

    worksurface itself. Additionally, a

    mobile pedestal can often be used

    as extra seating in a work area.

    Hutch/OverheadA Hutch(or an Overhead) is a piece of furniture that

    has open shelves or cabinet doors. It is supported by being

    placed on a credenza or a desk for additional storage.

    considerably more adjustment to the height, angle, positioning etc.

    your keyboard and mouse, and is generally used to

    move the location of such input devices to an ideal

    position for the individual user.

    Keyboard trays attach to your desk or

    work surface and allow you to easily

    change the position of your keyboard

    and mouse so that it is safer and more

    comfortable to work on the computer.

    Desktop Managementrefers to a variety of products

    that help you organize your desk. This inculdes pencil

    cups, various types of paper trays, paper clip holders,

    utility trays, wastebaskets, telephone shelves, vases,

    memo trays and business card holders.

    Other TermsErgonomicsis the applied science of equipment design, as for the workplace, intended tomaximize productivity by reducing operator fatigue and discomfort.

    A Center/Pencil Draweris the shallow drawer under the desktop and is used typically tostore pencils, pens, scissors, paper clips and other work tools stored in small quantities but forquick retrieval.

    Central Locking is when the user can lock all of the drawers of his desk with one drawer.Typically it is where a user will push in his center drawer to its fullest extent and then lock it.This engages an elaborate locking system that will lock all of the drawers on the left and theright hand side.

    Core Removeable Locksare valuable lock system that allows the user to switch out thebarrel of the locks to change key combinations after an employee has severed his relationshipwith the organization or when a key is lost just replace the lock cylinder with a new keycombination.

    Keyed Alikeis a term that refers to making all of the locks in an ofce workstation have thesame key. In modular furniture, you will usually have multiple key numbers on one desk, the leftped may require a different key than the other ped.

    End Panels are the panels to the left or right of the desk, return or credenza that make up theright side legs or the left side legs. It will stretch from where the left leg and the right leg wouldnormally be, but being made of an entire panel of structural material.

    Grommetsare the holes cut out in the top of the worksurface (desk top) to allow the user tosh wires down to the oor below without having them hang over the edge of the desk.

    Modesty Panelis a vertical surface on the front of the desk that protects the knee wellcompartment of the desk from being seen by the guests. A Full Modesty Panelgoes all theway to the oor. A Partial or 3/4 Modesty Panelis when there is still an area of abovethe oor that doesnt have modesty panel. It is usually used with 3/4 pedestals providing justenoughcoverage to cover the unnished back of the pedestals.

    Base Power Infeed is the power source connection from the buildings electrical currentto the systems furniture panel. Requires a licensed electrician to connect.

    A Power Poleaccomidates power and data, originating from the ceiling.

    ATransaction Topis countertop at a reception or administrative desk at approximately42 inches above the oor designed for a standing person to conduct a transaction with aseated person.

    Castersare a set of wheels or rotating balls mounted in a swivel frameand used for the support and movement of pedestals, tables, chairs, etc.

    Panel Creeprefers to the worksurface space consumed by the width of the panel insystems furniture. The unused space caused by panel creep can add up to hundredsof feet of unusable space, depending on the size of the oor plan.
