The Wisdom of Solomon or The Book of Wisdom – Posing a Question
The Book of Wisdom dates from the 2nd Century BCE. It is a Jewish work, written in Greek, probably in Alexandria, Egypt. It is a beautifully written, po-etic collection of sayings and advice. Most thought it was written to advise rulers. It has been attributed to Solomon, probably because he was thought to have been wise. But the first statement in our reading for today is a bit jarring – “God did not make death.” Which seems to beg the question - well then, who did? Most theologians seem to think that we, once again misusing the gift of free will, are responsible. Hmmmm… I’m not sure I follow that. I understand from Wisdom that “the generative forces of the world are wholesome,” without “destructive poison.” I want to believe that “God created us for incorruption and made us in the image of his own eternity,” but… If death entered the world because the devil is en-vious, I have a really hard time buying that everyone who experiences death must belong to the devil’s “company”! ADULT FORUM
ADULT FORUM will meet today at 11:30 a.m. (following the 10 a.m. service) in the Conference Room. We contin-ue our series “Painting the Stars: Science, Religion and Evolving Faith”. This month’s presentation is entitled “Evolutionary Christianity.” Christianity is changing as the world is changing. People say they are “spiritual” but not “religious”. There is a holy longing within people for a con-scious awakening. How can the church honor the blessed unrest within them (us) and acknowledge their yearning for what their hearts know is possible in this world? Our world is radically divided and we as church need to pro-vide opportunities for discussion. We need to address how we adapt to the changes around us. We also need to figure out how we can both learn to utilize the media that surrounds us, yet teach asceticism to our people so that they can hear the “still small voice of God”. This DVD pre-sents some challenging concepts for us to hear and dis-cuss.
Worshipping With Us
Episcopal worship is participatory. We stand, we kneel, we respond vocally during parts of the ser-vice, sometimes with singing! Please join in at your level of comfort. If you’d like to learn more about what we as Episcopalians believe and do, or if you have any questions, please fill out one of the yellow cards in the pew and give it to Mother Susan or one of our ushers. We hope you feel welcome here and that you will come back often to feed your faith.
A Word About Receiving Communion in the Episcopal Church
All are invited to the Altar to receive. If you would like a blessing, just cross your arms over your chest. If you decide to receive only the bread, extend your hand for the wafer and cross your arms over your chest to decline the wine. For the wine or grape juice you may guide the chalice to your lips by placing your hand gently on the chalice’s base and guiding it. Or you can dip your host (wafer) into the wine. Or you can give the host to the Lay Eucharistic Minister, who will dip the host into the wine and place it in your mouth.

Food Pantry
Next week, July 7 & 8 we are collecting Syrup for the Pitman Food Pantry. All do-nations are greatly appreciated and ac-cepted.
CLASS will meet on Sunday, June 5, follow-ing the morning service in the Conference Room. Our topic this month will be "Evil, Suf-fering & A Loving God." Mark your calendar for the next study of Up-pity Women of the Bible! We'll begin on Thursday, September 8 at 9:30 a.m. (following Morning Prayer). Our focus for this study will be the book of Judith. Watch for more details toward the end of summer.
Our Church is Going Green!
The Church of the Good Shepherd is undertak-ing a “Green Church Initiative”. We are in the early stages of forming a Green Team to lead our efforts in “Going Green”. The Church of the Good Shepherd has already undertaken many valuable steps in the right direction and there are several more ways in which we can significantly reduce our energy use, lessen our impact on our planet and save money. To that end, we have placed recycling bins in the Par-ish Hall and kitchen and other areas of the Church. Please look for these bins when dis-carding your trash and remember to dispose of your recyclables in the appropriate bin.
BIBLE STUDY ON
THURSDAYS @ 9:30 AM
Thursday a.m. Bible Study is a series called “First Light”. This is a 12-session DVD study of the historical Jesus and the Kingdom of God with John Dominic Crossan and Marcus Borg, two of the world’s leading Jesus scholars on location throughout the Galilee and Jerusa-lem. No books to order, no homework to do!!! Just come and join us on Thursday mornings at 9:30 a.m., in the Conference Room. Watch the DVD and join in the discussion.
