Can Anything Good Come Out of Nazareth?Since my sermon today will focus on Samuel, I thought Id say a few words about this jaded comment from Nathaniel found in our Gospel. Its the beautifully unexpected, and its all over the place in the Jesus story. Out of death comes a resurrection. Out of the ashes new life shall rise. Out of slums comes redemption. Out of Nazareth comes the King of Kings. Kingdom logic pulls the proud into the dirt and exalts the humble and gives dead cities heavenly hope. “Can Anything Good Come Out

of Nazareth?”

Since my sermon today will focus on Samuel, I

thought I’d say a few words about this jaded

comment from Nathaniel found in our Gospel.

First century Nazareth had nothing to recom-

mend it. It was a small backwater town north of

Jerusalem with probably no more than 480 in-

habitants. Scholars believe it was filthy and no

one, nothing of note ever came from or would

come from Nazareth.

The following is from a blog by Kenji Ku-

ramitsu, a former “evangelical” and current

Episcopalian. (Of course, I’d like to think we’re

all evangelical)

“Nazareth is Detroit, Rio, Calcutta, Selma, In-

glewood.” He reminds us that God’s logic is not

what we’re used to. Kuramitsu calls God’s logic

“kingdom logic.”

“That’s the beauty of kingdom logic. It’s never

what you’d expect, but it makes some strange

sort of sense deep in your bones.

It’s the beautifully unexpected, and it’s all over

the place in the Jesus story.

Out of death comes a resurrection.

Out of the ashes new life shall rise.

Out of slums comes redemption.

Out of Nazareth comes the King of Kings.

Kingdom logic pulls the proud into the dirt and

exalts the humble and gives dead cities heavenly

hope.

So no matter whether you’re in a village or a

ghetto or a residence hall or in the suburbs or a

backwards little town in Palestine…

just smile and remember that, of all places,

something good came out of Nazareth.”

Blessings, Mother Susan

Worshipping With Us

Episcopal worship is participatory. We stand, we kneel, we respond vocally during parts of the ser-vice, sometimes with singing! Please join in at your level of comfort. If you’d like to learn more about what we as Episcopalians believe and do, or if you have any questions, please fill out one of the yellow cards in the pew and give it to Mother Susan or one of our ushers. We hope you feel welcome here and that you will come back often to feed your faith.

A Word About Receiving Communion in the Episcopal Church

All are invited to the Altar to receive. If you would like a blessing, just cross your arms over your chest. If you decide to receive only the bread, extend your hand for the wafer and cross your arms over your chest to decline the wine.

For the wine or grape juice you may guide the chalice to your lips by placing your hand gently on the chalice’s base and guiding it. Or you can dip your host (wafer) into the wine. Or you can give the host to the Lay Eucharistic Minister, who will dip the host into the wine and place it in your mouth.

SNOW REMOVAL

We are in SNOW season and we will need your help with snow removal. There is a sign-up sheet in the Parish Hall. We have a snow blower & shovels or you can use your own. Thank you in advance!

Annual Meeting

The ANNUAL MEETING of the Church of the

Good Shepherd will be held immediately fol-

lowing the 10am Holy Eucharist on Sunday,

January 28, 2018.

A Word About Receiving Communion in the Episcopal Church

All are invited to the Altar to receive. You may stand or kneel. If you do not wish to receive, but would like a blessing, cross your arms over your chest. If you decide to receive in one kind extend your hand for the wafer and cross your arms over your chest to decline the wine. If you desire to receive the wine you may guide the chalice to your lips by placing your hand gently on the chalice’s base and guiding it. Or you can dip your host (wafer) into the wine. Or you can give the host to the Lay Eucharistic Minister, who will dip the host into the wine and place it in your mouth.

Gluten-free Communion Hosts

Gluten-free Communion hosts are available for those with allergies. Please let the priest know.

Bible Study

We are now looking at the Book of Acts. How did a rag-tag group of disciples become the Church? How did all of this get going? 7PM on Tuesday nights.

Inquirers’ Class

INQUIRER'S CLASS will meet on Sunday, June 5, following the morning service in the Conference Room. Our topic this month will be "Evil, Suffering & A Loving God." Mark your calendar for the next study of Up-pity Women of the Bible! We'll begin on Thursday, September 8 at 9:30 a.m. (following Morning Prayer). Our focus for this study will be the book of Judith. Watch for more details toward the end of summer.

The Annual Meeting – Sunday, January 28, after worship

There are those among us who would rather watch paint dry and that is understandable. Business meetings may not be fascinating but they are necessary, and if you are someone who supports Church of the Good Shepherd then your presence is necessary. A meal is pro-vided and new Vestry members are elected and votes are taken concerning the adoption of our 2018 budget.

Church of the Good Shepherd has run very well for a number of years – basically for two im-portant reasons. God has been good to us. We trust that will continue, with God’s help. We don’t do anything without God’s help!

The other reason is YOU! Part of what makes Good Shepherd so successful is that all of you step up. Everybody participates. So please consider our Annual Meeting another oppor-tunity for participation.

We’ve Gotta Lotta Sickies

Around Here!

Now that Christmas is over, many of us are ex-periencing a let-down that results in, “Finally, I have enough time to be sick!” Colds and flu are popping up all over the place. Let’s promise each other to take care of ourselves and to take care of each other by vowing that if we’re sick, we’ll keep our germs to ourselves and not share them. “Sharing is caring” except when you’re sick. Stay home! Mother Susan or Deacon Carl can bring you the Eucharist. God bless everyone who is ill and we pray you recover soon!

Don’t Forget About our Squirrels’ Nests! One in the Back of the Church

and One in the Parish Hall. All Waiting to Take Your Spare Change!
