The BUMC Tribe Youth Ministry has been busy so far this fall! We have just wrapped up our MOVE series with our Fall Mystery Retreat at Camp Loucon September 24-25th. We began the weekend with a Fifth Quarter lock-in where the St. John Youth Ministry joined us for a time of fellowship and celebration. We left out at about 2:30 a.m. for a MYSTERY Scavenger Hunt that ended at Camp Loucon, where we spent a week-end concentrating on how Christ is moving in our individual lives and what that means for each of us as followers of Jesus. Speaking of MOVING, we were blessed to be able to SERVE our church on our very first SERVE SUNDAY! We look forward to serving the first Sunday of each month in the same capacity. On September 28, we walked up the hill to the assist-ed living home, All About Home. We served the residents by singing, visiting, and playing games with them. I am so excited about the heart of this group of young people.

When we return from Fall Break, we will be in-troducing a new series called Convicted Christian. Be on the lookout for some crime scenes around our church. We will be looking at the evidence that is required to convict each of us as GUILTY OF BEING A CHRISTIAN! Our youth have been inviting friends to attend with them on Wednesdays and Sundays, and I am happy to say we have increased our TRIBE by eight new regular attendees. God is GOOD and we are BLESSED with the hearts of these KID-DOS! Pray for us as we continue to MOVE.

In HIS name, Kelly

“Because children have abounding vital-ity, because they are in spirit fierce and free, therefore they want things repeated and un-changed. They always say, “Do it again”; and the grown-up person does it again until he is nearly dead. For grown-up people are not strong enough to exult in monotony. But per-haps God is strong enough to exult in mo-notony. It is possible that God says every morning, “Do it again” to the sun; and every evening, “Do it again” to the moon. It may not be automatic necessity that makes all daisies alike; it may be that God makes every daisy separately, but has never got tired of making them. It may be that He has the eternal appe-tite of infancy; for we have sinned and grown old, and our Father is younger than we.”

October is going to be full of family fun! October 23 is Family Day at Roberts’ Family Farm. We will meet at the pavilion from 2-4 for fun and fellowship. All ages wel-come. Please note, this is a family event and not a drop off. Please let me know if your child needs special arrangements because of schedule conflicts. We will provide pizza, the reward for our peanut butter collection for the food pantry. Please bring any snacks you would like to contribute. The bakery will be open for goodies and drinks. My hope is this is a chance for families to get to know one another a little better. Trunk or Treat, Monday, October 31: We need to collect candy! A donation box is set up in the atrium for candy. More infor-mation to come from our planning team. In Children’s Church we are going through some basic theological discussions right now. The big questions in simple terms. Who is God? What name do we call God? What is prayer? These kids are learning and thinking about God as more than a character in the Bible. It is wonderful to witness.

Fifth Sunday Offering

Sunday, October 30, will be a Fifth Sunday. Our spe-cial offering on this day will go to the United Methodist Homes for Children and Youth. This offering is vital in supporting the ministry to abused, neglected and hurt-ing children and youth. It enables us to help give hope to these children for a brighter future. Please give generously and help our Methodist Homes offer these children a chance to live in God’s grace and abundant love.

Welcome, Baby Girl!

Over these next few weeks I will be preach-ing on Jesus’ mission for our church and our vision for the future. This is not a new en-deavor. Brandenburg UMC has from time to time done this very thing, often with great re-sults, but mission and vision must constantly be revisited. The mission of the church in general may not change much, but vision should be specific to a congregation and the current situation. Just what is mission and vision? Those words are thrown around in business, government, and church. Here are a few quotes and definitions I’ve found help-ful and want to share with you. Mission is about determining our biblical reason for existence and tells us where we should be focusing according to God’s word. Vision is about detecting our unique future focus and gives us a picture of where God is leading us. In the envisioning process, you travel from the present (mission) to the future (vision). You move from the universal and biblical (mission) to the unique and contextual (vi-sion). It also helps to see vision as a church’s DNA or fingerprint. No two are alike. That is why in the vision process we ask, “How does our unique congregation use its distinctive gift-mix to fulfill our special calling in our specific community?”

George Barna says, “Vision is specific, de-tailed, customized, distinctive and unique to a given church. It allows a leader to say no to opportunities, it provides direction, it em-powers people for service, and it facilitates productivity.” Vision helps a church deter-mine the difference between a good idea and a God idea. Vision allows a church to say no to some things, while saying yes to the right things that will grow the church and accom-plish the mission. A vision team was established just prior to my arriving. This team consists of Lee Klock-ow, Scott Wilson, Charlotte Shepard, Summer Brown, Jon Miller, Bill Adams, Jessie Trotter, and Steve Ward. I look forward to working with this team and the Administrative Coun-cil in discerning God’s best for your church. Please pray for these leaders, and pray for God’s vision for our church to be planted in each of our hearts.

Jeff Carter

Yes, it is that time again. We had such great par-ticipation in our shoebox drive last year that we want to challenge the church to donate 100 boxes this year. We will be distributing information dur-ing the month of October and collecting the boxes the first week of November. Please be watching and listening for further information. Please call or text Joy Adams (270) 945-7702 or Tori Aikin (270) 945-7006 with any questions. These shoeboxes will go to a child somewhere around the world who may have never received a gift in his/her life. It is a wonderful opportunity to share the love of Jesus with someone who may have never heard the Good News. Please consider putting together one or more boxes. Thanks.
