Blessing Box “Take what you need, leave what you can.”

Have you noticed the yellow “Blessing Box” that has been located on

our church property? This box has been placed at St. Luke’s by the

Mom’s Club of Hickory. “A Blessing Box” is a mini food pantry for our

neighbors in need. The Mom’s Club will be adding items as needed and

they encourage anyone from St. Luke’s to help keep the box well

stocked of food and personal items. Our thanks to St. Luke’s Church

Trustees for approving this new outreach program to our community.

St. Luke’s Church Endowment News

Did you realize that St. Luke’s UMC has a Church Endowment? Each year earnings from

this fund are used in a variety of ways to positively impact the mission and ministry of

St. Luke’s. Over the past five years these monies have updated our church parking lot,

purchased new worship screens/televisions for the FLC, purchased new tables for the FLC,

constructed the basketball court, purchased new church computers a new church server,

and supported many other important projects. If you would like to become a participant in

this endowment as a Wesley Society member, please contact Lisa Lail in the Church Office.

Beginner Guitar Class to be offered in March

Dust of your old guitar and come learn how to play and enjoy the gift of making

music. Class will be offered each Wednesday in March from 7:15 p.m.—8:00

p.m. in the Youth Building Room 500. In these lessons you will learn how to

hold the guitar, tune the guitar, basic chord structures, tablature, and your first

three chord songs. This is a fun class for all ages. Please contact Pastor Joe at

828.327.9837, if you would like to learn more about this class.

Are you looking for a Sunday School Class?

For the past several months a new Sunday School Class has been meeting in the Church Administration Building Conference Room #202. This class is often video based with question/discussion to follow. Since its inception the class has covered a variety of topics and currently is focused on the themes of religion, ethics, and politics. On Sunday, February 16th the class will be starting a new study, and this would be great time to come and visit. Of course, you are invited to come and join anytime as there is always a place for you.

CHARLES M. SNIPES SCHOLARSHIP

Applications are now being accepted for the Charles M. Snipes Scholarship, which is offered by the United Methodist Men.

The Charles M. Snipes Scholarship provides scholarships to graduating high school seniors or those who have graduated within the past three (3) years, or who have earned or will earn their GED by June 30, 2020.

Applicants must be an active member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church or have been active in the Church’s youth activities (CROSSFLAME, Mosaic Youth, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Youth Missions, etc.) for a minimum of two (2) years.

Applicants must be graduating high school seniors, or individuals who have graduated or earned their GED within the past three (3) years, applying for enrollment in an accredited college, university, community college, business, or trade school.

The Charles M. Snipes Scholarship will be awarded on Graduation Sunday, which is May 17, 2020.

The completed scholarship application form and supporting documents must be submitted by March 31, 2020 to Lisa Lail, Church Administrator.

CROSSFLAME Fundraiser Spaghetti Lunch

CROSSFLAME will host a Spaghetti Lunch, February 16 in the Fellowship Hall following the 10:55 a.m. worship service. The menu will be spaghetti, salad, bread, dessert and drinks. Along with the meal, they will present a special program of Disney songs from Broadway!

CROSSFLAME is raising funds for their trip to Appalachian State University on February 22 and for their Summer Tour to Kansas City, June 5-13.

Please plan to join us for music from “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Tarzan,” “Moanna,” “ The Lion King,” and other Disney favorites!

CROSSFLAME to Sing the National Anthem for App State’s Basketball Game

CROSSFLAME has been invited once again, to sing the National Anthem at the Appalachian State University Men’s Basketball game on February 22. We have purchased a block of tickets at $5.00 per ticket. St. Luke’s Missions Alive - 2020

Grandview and Northview Middle Schools will be partnering with the State Employees' Credit Union for an event called The Reality of Money in the coming months. In this event, seventh grade students will learn about personal finance, and have the opportunity to manage a budget in this fun and informative simulation. We're looking for Community Volunteers to help us with the activity. This event will be held at Grandview on February 27th from 11:15 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., and at Northview on March 31st (times TBD). February 2 - Hickory Soup Kitchen (Goal $2000) As the only Soup Kitchen in Hickory, we serve our neighbors on the average of 215 people with 325 plates of food daily, plus providing safe shower facilities, take home groceries and much more. We participate in a variety of events to raise funds and awareness, collect goods and more. We rely on volunteers to make our mission a reality. Located at 110 2nd St Place SE, our hours are Monday thru Friday 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. Changing lives, one plate at time!

February 9 - NETworX Catawba Valley (Goal $700) a

faith-based initiative that engages the community to help move

families out of poverty, children succeed in school, and address

systemic solutions to poverty.

The Gathering = Family

Since The Gathering started in August, Helen J Ferrell, aka “Mama Helen”, has become a

staple volunteer. Helen, seventy-five years young, was born in West Virginia but has lived in Virginia, New Haven Connecticut and North Carolina. She showed up the first day at The Gathering with a passion and eagerness to serve. She jumped in to cut desserts, set-up the dinning room, prep the food counter, carry out trash, and whatever else needed to be done. Her humility and willingness to serve inspires others and provides a platform for others to get to know her story. Mack McLeod, a United Methodist Man, took time to get to know Helen and now deems her an honorary member of United Methodist Men. Each week she comes in, puts on her apron and goes to work, but I often think about what drives her to live a life of compassion?

Helen is one of eighteen and grew up having to care for others. But when I asked her what drove her to live a caring life, she said it was her grandmother. Her grandmother was teaching her to fish one day and on the creek bank had a heart attack. Helen, fourteen, sat with her grandmother until help arrived. In that moment, she knew that she was going to care for people. She uses her gift of compassion as she volunteers at the Hickory Soup Kitchen, Salvation Army, drives people to and from the bus station, when she is serving at Westview, and when she provides clothing and food to those in need. She has a heart for those living on the margins and believes every person matters and should receive care and love.

Helen herself has experienced hard times. She has lost two husbands, a child, lived through breast cancer, and a liver transplant. Through it all, she has kept on going. She believes if people experience the love of Christ, they will know the Love of Christ. She encourages everyone to come to Westview or The Gathering to experience love for yourself. She believes without this ministry; people would feel lost. She looks forward to coming each week because this is her time with family. We hope you will take time to get to know “Mama Helen” at The Gathering dinner Church, Wednesday’s 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and remember this is a place for everyone at God’s table. St. Luke’s Becoming a Wheel of Care

St. Luke’s is a caring congregation that provides wonderful support

and care for folks through Barnabas Ministry, Prayerful Stitchers, the

Bereavement Team, Greater Hickory Cooperative Christian Ministry

Hospitality Team, Prayer Team, Monday Visitation Team, and so

many more. Currently these ministries operate as silo ministries that

operate somewhat independently and do not overlap, connect or

partner in anyway with each other or other ministries in the church.

Because Caring for people is a collective effort of the church, St.

Luke’s is implementing a Caring Congregation model written and developed by Rev. Karen Lampe,

Minister of Congregational Care, at Church of the Resurrection. The Caring Congregation model

streamlines congregational care ministries under one unit as one comprehensive wheel of care for the

whole congregation and community.

Because caring for others is an intimate task, Leader (s) for each care ministry spoke will be vetted,

trained, and equipped to lead their specific area of care ministry. Essentially each Care Minister will be

living out their baptism in being a priest (the presence of the Holy Spirit) to others. They also will be a

part of the Congregational Care Ministers that meet on a monthly basis and share important

information and needs, as well as, learn new ways to cross care for people.

Because each spoke of care is essential to the entire new Care Ministry Model, the central leadership of

the pastors and a Congregational Care Coordinator, Beth Osbahr, is necessary to help facilitate and

communicate with all Congregational Care Ministers. Beth Osbahr will oversee the Congregation

Care Ministry Team and work with the pastors to ensure every care need is communicated and

tended to.

So how do we begin implementing this new care ministry model? A grant was awarded to St. Luke’s to

host the Caring Congregation Training Event, Friday, April 3 and Saturday, April 4. This event

will allow training for current care ministry teams, individuals vetted by pastors, and offer new

opportunities for people to vision and think about how they might use their gifts to care for people.

This Training is open to those who are currently serving in a care ministry or have an interest in being

a part of this new comprehensive care model. The Cost is $50.00 per person. Registration is available

ONE Ministry seeks to create an opportunity for families with children from birth-5th grade to develop a mentoring/intergenerational relationship with an individual or couple at St. Luke’s. This re-lationship can take many forms. The main purpose of this ministry is to help our young families to connect to their faith community and to help them know they are loved and cared for. Many of these families do not have extended family in the area and very few of them know generations beyond their own both in the church and in the communi-ty. The saying “it takes a village” is needed today more than ever. At the baptism of each child, we, the gathered faith community promise that to-gether we will raise these children to know God’s love. This is where ONE ministry is called to put hands and feet to those words. Individuals or couples are needed to share in this ministry with our families. I thank you for your "Love thy neighbor" spirit. Especially now that those months of cold nights are upon us once again. But what an opportunity to continue representing Christianity with its

sleeves rolled up!

Our Warming Station usually becomes active when the tem-perature is expected to be 32 degrees or lower by 10:00 PM on any given Sunday evening. On those evenings we will need a driver(s), volunteers to cook a warm dish or two for our guests, along with some kind voices and friendly faces.
