ST. VINCENT DE PAUL……………………………………….(219) 659-1073

A recent bulletin from Our Lady of Consolation Parish in Merrillville stated erroneously that “all of the parishes of Whiting will be closed and one new parish will be formed at the site of the former St. John the Baptist Church.” We would like our parishioners to know that no final decision regarding the four parishes in Whiting-Robertsdale has been made. It is our understanding that discussion of the future consolidation of parishes is ongoing. We regret that the statement in the OLC bulletin may have created confu-sion and consternation among our parishioners.

Fr. Mark Peres, CPPS, Pastor, and Fr. Jerome Stack, CPPS

Congratulations, New Grand Knights! Two of our parishioners were recently elected Grand Knight of their respective Knights of Columbus councils: Adam Kazragys of Pope John XXIII Council 1696 (Whiting), and Scott Tabernacki of Trinity Council 3755 (East Side). Congratulations to both as they begin their terms as leaders of their councils.

St. John the Baptist: Iconic Building of NWI St. John the Baptist Catholic Church is be featured in the 1st Annual Iconic Buildings of Northwest Indiana Photo Exhibit. Along with photos submitted by amateur photographers, the exhibit will in-clude blueprints of the Church and proposed designs that were not built. The exhibit is at Studio 659, 1413 119th St, and runs through September 10. The exhibit is sponsored by the Times of Northwest Indiana, Whiting-Robertsdale Chamber of Commerce and the Whiting Arts Council/Studio 659.

“Lord, teach us to pray” Jesus teaches us that in our prayer God is our “Father” and just as a parent’s love for their children is unlimited, so also God’s love and care for us is unlimited. Jesus further teaches that prayer un-folds in the context of this special relationship of “Our Father,” but it is not a kinship or progeny. “Father” is a metaphor used to de-scribe our unique, intimate relationship with God. This relation-ship inspires in us confidence, with the realization that what we pray for is not as important as the fact that we address God in such intimate terms. Prayer always deepens our relationship with God and this is already an answer to what we need. St. Teresa of Avila often could not finish the “Our Father” because she found that the first few words said everything. “Father,” what a rich word! When you say “father,” you think of one who pro-vides, and the great provider for all of us is God: “Our Father, Who is in heaven.” We can see many things wrong with the world, but it is good to think of what is right in the world. Who made the sun to rise this morning? Who gives us the fruits of the earth and the rain to soften the soil? Who feeds the birds of the air and clothes the lilies of the field? God our Father. We could continue making a long list of the good and beautiful things that we can see with our eyes or hear with our ears in this world of ours, and all of them come from God: “Our Father, Who is in heaven.” Who told us all this? Jesus Christ. There are people who say that the most im-portant truth that Jesus has taught us in the Gospels is that we have a Father in heaven and He is God. (Parts taken from: Living Liturgy by Joyce Zimmerman, C.PP.S. & Deep Down Things by Richard McCullen, CM.) Take Time and Reflect. How have you found in your life that in-deed God is your “Father?”

Stewardship: Time, Talent and Gifts

MARRIAGE BANNS

Kristina Koliboski and David Borgetti II

Be Disciples of Christ. One of the first statements Fr. Jerry men-tioned to me when he came on board last September. Sounded easy enough. Be like the people Jesus affected the most; the peo-ple who were going astray and, through the work of God, found their way back to the Good News. In doing so, I have to believe each disciple learned a little (or a lot) about themselves, and oth-ers, during this process. This is also a statement I heard Fr. Mark say during our first Parish Staff Meeting last week. Again, there was something about these words that struck accord with me, but this time was for a completely different reason.

Given all that is going on in the world today – coups, gun violence, terror attacks – it could be a good thing to stand in front of that mirror and take a long look inside ourselves. What is driving our actions? Is it love? Is it kindness? Our faith can get us through times like these. If we put complete trust in God, and in His mes-sages, we will make this place better. We can also apply these steps to SJB. Faith will be a central component of our vision mov-ing forward. We can make sure we are consistent in our actions and loving in our thoughts. After all, most of the Disciples had little else besides their faith.

HOW TIME FLIES! It was a pleasure to meet and greet St. John’s new pastor, Father Mark Peres, a couple of weeks ago. Actually, some of us remem-ber when Father Mark was ordained and stationed at St. John some 22 years ago! We certainly wish Father Mark good luck and God’s Blessings! While reminiscing, we come to realize that it has been ten years that St. John’s Alumni Association, Forever Blue and Gold, has been parking cars during the grand Pierogi Fest! During this period over $100,000.00 has been raised directly for St. John School! To be most effective and efficient parking cars, additional help is needed. Alums, parents and friends of St. John School are encour-aged to donate an hour or two parking cars on Saturday, July 30. To volunteer, simply call the rectory at 219-659-0023 or 219-659-3662 or better yet, send us a message at [email protected] Thanks for helping!!

Synod 2017 Youth and young adults are not only the future of our Church, but an integral part of the here and now. Watch Bishop Donald J. Hying’s video on youth and young adults at dcgary.org/synod.htm. His July 3 column on the subject can be accessed at nwicath-

olic.org. Please begin to prayerfully reflect upon and discuss how our young people are being welcomed to become active and joyful members of our parish.
