Luke 1:39-56; 2:1-7 NRSV

39 In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, 40 where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was fi lled with the Holy Spirit 42 and exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. 43 And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? 44 For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leaped for joy. 45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfi llment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.”46 And Mary said, “My soul magnifi es the Lord, 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; 49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. 50 His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. 51 He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. 52 He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; 53 he has fi lled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. 54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, 55 according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever.”56 And Mary remained with her about three months and then returned to her home.

1 In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2 Th is was the fi rst registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 All went to their own towns to be registered. 4 Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. 5 He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. 7 And she gave birth to her fi rstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

Welcome

Christmas Eve Prayer

Dear Lord, help us remember the birth of Jesus, that we may share in the songs of the angels, the

gladness of the shepherds and the worship of the wise men. May Christmas morning make us happy

to be Your children, and Christmas evening bring us to our beds with grateful thoughts, joyful

hearts forgiving and forgiven, for Jesus’ sake. Amen. (Adapted from Robert Louis Stevenson)

Christmas Eve Message Senior Pastor, Th e Rev. Dr. Robert de Wetter

Th e Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Th y name. Th y kingdom come; Th y will be done on

earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive

those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Th ine is the

kingdom, the power and the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Hymn #253, Silent Night

Closing Prayer

We rejoice in the steadfast presence of Jesus Christ, born of Mary, growing through childhood into

adulthood, in all his life manifesting the peace, love, and justice of God; his voice undimmed by the

centuries; his call and his promise as clear to us as it was to his disciples so long ago. Come to us,

Lord Jesus, Be born in us this night, in our hearts, our minds, our lives. May the light of your life be

kindled in us, And lead us to the shining truth of God with us, God for us, God in us. Amen.
