One half a day workshop held in Aditi Mahavidyalaya, University of Delhi to discussed approaches to

overcome the sustainability and scaling challenges for WASH in Schools in the Delhi NCR Region. The

eight five students and two faculties of Social Work Department from Aditi College attended and

share lessons learned, innovations and strategies for improving.

The WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) in schools movement is gaining momentum, evidenced by an

increase in international and local attention and funding, the development of school-based resources,

and implementation designs for schools all over the world, including a “Call to Action for WASH in

Schools,” launched in April 2010 at the Dubai International Humanitarian Aid Conference, by CARE,

Dubai Cares, UNICEF, World Health Organization (WHO), Save the Children, and other key partners. The

objective is to create and maintain “WASH-Friendly” Schools that have safe and healthy environments,

including adequate hygiene and sanitation facilities that allow children to be healthier, more attentive

learners. Since it is estimated that fewer than half of the schools in the world have access to drinking

water, and even fewer have access to adequate sanitation, this situation has become critical.

WWO Workshop Objectives were

Discuss the importance of the three key WASH practices

Analyze and describe the WASH problem

World Without Obstacles process the constructing a multipurpose school building in rural India.

The building is for the Gurukul Children Academy - a primary school in Belsar, Uttar Pradesh. This

project is part of WWO’s educational initiative called “Shikshit Bharat - Unite for an Educated

India.

The Principal had prepared a simple map with the measurements of the land. He had fenced the property with wooden poles and ropes last week and sent us some pics by email. Improvised paper signs along this temporary fence are indicating that a school will be built here. Locals are informed now: the first contours are becoming visible! The architect wants to see the land before he starts designing. He will visit the village as soon as possible. The exact measurements and orientation to the sun need to be checked. He also wants to get an impression of the neighbouring properties and of local building styles. It was decided that he will join the Principal when he returns to his village by train in a few days. At the end of our meeting, the contract was signed, a first instalment paid and a group picture taken. The first step is taken thanks to friends and family who raised just enough money for a first architectural design and sketches. Once our vision is clear, we can start raising big money for construction phase…

In Delhi, 64% newborns die within the first 28 days - The National Capital had the worst Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) among the four metropolitan cities between 2010 and 2012 with 30 newborns dying for every 1,000 live births, a new report has said. A substantial 64 per cent die within the first 28 days of their birth. In respect to Delhi, where 50 percent of the children live in slums and 14.71 per cent of its population is below poverty line - the focus of National Health Mission on maternal and child health, and especially new born by providing adequate number of skilled frontline health workers, building community mechanisms for monitoring and a stronger health system will enable the state to lead on tackling new born child survival, the report points out.

While there has been significant progress on ensuring child survival in India, the fact that nearly 40 per cent of neo-natal deaths occur on the 1st day of birth in India is stalling progress on achieving Millennium Development Goal- 4 (reducing IMR). India accounts for an astounding 29 per cent of the global deaths of newborns on their very first day of birth. About half the first-day deaths around the world could be prevented if every mother and baby had access to free and quality health care and skilled birth attendants.

WWO conducted a session for woman on antenatal check-ups, post-natal care and breast feeding in the slum community of South Campus of Delhi University. During the Session the information & stress that is given to the group members these are as follows topics:

Time to time check-ups with Gynaecologist, tetanus vaccine during the pregnancy.

Iron, calcium tablets and healthy nutrition diet during pregnancy.

Carry the baby in proper position while feeding & time to time consultation with doctor.

“Let’s Go To School”-Rally - The campaign has been launched with a special focus on enrolling all out-of-school children at cradles and then retaining them in classes in Belsar Block, District Gonda, Uttar Pradesh.

It has been observed that despite all efforts made over the past years, there are children who are still ‘out-of-school’. The out-of-school children comprise of drop out children and also children who have never been enrolled in the school for various reasons. The main reasons for these children being out-of-school can be attributed to engagement of children in agriculture or other labour work, sibling care, cattle grazing, weak economic condition of family, migration etc.

WWO has organized a rally “Chalo School Chale” (Let’s Go to School) on 16 August 2013 in which 60-70

students of Gurukul Children Academy School has participated along with 5-6 teachers. Students were

holding ply card with the message of Importance to attending schools, and chanting during rally Chalo

Many bright, hardworking and deserving students in India do not complete their education because of their poor economic background. Many of them are children of poor farmers and daily wage laborers who go to great lengths to provide their children basic education. The students themselves study in conditions which would not be acceptable in any developed country. They lack basic infrastructure like a table and chair sufficient books etc. In spite of these odds, they manage to qualify in the entrance exams for professional streams, but they back out due to lack of financial support. It was decided by the trust to generate funds from individuals and organizations so as to sponsor students with merit from the economically deprived rural communities to manifest progress by providing them with financial support. The Kedar Nath Educational Scholarship (KNES) Fund was started in 2012 which provides financial and material (stationary, books, uniform etc) support to children from for backward, deprived and minority communities of villages. This year we awarded six scholarships under this category to the student from GCA, Belsar.

Many families falling under the backward category, specifically financially challenged people, find it extremely difficult to buy stationary for all of its’ academic calendar. The aim of this program is to provide stationary to the villagers by giving them basic stationary like books, notebook, pens, pencils, colours etc under the Kedar Nath Educational Scholarship (KNES) Fund to children from underprivileged background in rural areas. As many children were forced to drop out of school due to financial constraints. The supports and help are to cover the costs of school fees, uniforms and stationery etc. Children - mainly from backwards classes, physically challenged, and children ‐ living far off place are highly eligible for sponsorship under this program. WWO organized school stationery kit distribution drive this year to support these families to afford and access good and quality education. This will be part of the 'Shikshit Bharat' initiative of the organization. 220 students from GCA School received the stationery kits. For the past few years, the event has been running successfully and benefitted over 1500 students.

In the contemporary world the youth is facing the most of adversity and lack of association within the society. Around 60% of the population in India constitutes of youth, yet it remains the most subjugated and marginalized. The difficult circumstances that young people face because of limited opportunities for education and training, feasible employment and health and social services, and because of a growing incidence of substance abuse and juvenile criminal behavior is deteriorating the chance of India’s quest for achieving the status of a developed Nation. WWO’s Ikanós youth empowerment program is committed to provide the best educational opportunities both formal & informal to student at all level and helps rural and urban youth through education, skill and vocational training. Our volunteers provide guidance, direction to the youth to choose best option available for the career keeping in mind about the time, resources and skill the person is having. Supporting youth will in turn lead to healthy relationships and mature adults. Volunteers realize the needs and concerns youth are much different than those of adults and support will include measures to deal with these differences. This year we assist with graduation and post graduation for dropout, facilitate scholarship and offer counseling to 15 - 20 youth to pursue their higher education from distance learning mode to complete their graduation/post graduation among them few are Mr. Sarin Prakash, Ms. Ritu, Ms. Jyoti, Mr. Santosh Kumar Rai, Mr. Inder Singh etc
