World Wide Sires Beef Sire Directory. Featuring Angus, Red Angus, Charolais, Shorthon and Simmental Sires.TRANSCRIPT
Dear friends,Welcome to the 2010 World Wide Sires BeefSire Directory!
2010 represents the beginning of a “New Era”for World Wide Sires in the Beef ArtificialBreeding industry in Australia.
From the resources of Accelerated Geneticsand Select Sires who are both leaders in theWorld Beef Genetics, World Wide Sires arepleased to offer the Australian Beef industry anexpanded product and breed range.
Our goal is to provide a range of genetics that will not only increase theprofitability of your herd but also add to the longevity of your breedingnucleus. With a strong focus on balanced EPD’s and Indexes we alsoplace lot of emphasise on other traits such as:
• Docility• Mature Size• Structural Correctness• Fleshing Ability
We don’t only research individual sires, we research their Sire, Dam andSiblings, assessing all the traits listed above which can’t always bemeasured in an EPD or Index.
The reliability of highly accurate data submitted on sires is extremelyimportant. We research not only the individual bulls, but also the peopleand the programs behind the bulls. Another important factor we alwaysconsider is the size of contemporary groups. Many of our successfulproven sires and young sires of the future have been sourced frombreeders in the USA who run large herds and manage largecontemporary groups and submit highly accurate data.
World Wide Sires has the resources of not only our professional staff herein Australia, we also access to the resources of the highly trained andrespected staff from the Beef Dept’s at both Select Sires and AcceleratedGenetics.
Our team are committed to providing the Australian Beef industry withproducts, knowledge and service to enhance the productivity andprofitability in your breeding goals.
All the best for a great season in 2010.

When selecting bulls to use in your breedingprogram, there are a variety of selection toolsavailable. Some breeders put emphasis on ExpectedProgeny Differences (EPDs) or actual performancedata, while others may select bulls based onpedigrees or phenotype. However, breeders areencouraged to utilize EPDs as their main geneticprediction tool.
In the process of choosing a bull, breeders sometimesassume that the bull with the most desirable actualperformance will produce the most desirableprogeny. Although a sire’s individual measurementsand performance of his progeny are related, theserelationships are inconsistent and difficult to predict. An EPD takes into account not only the bull’s ownperformance, but also the performance of hisancestors, siblings, and progeny, making an EPD thesingle best estimate of progeny performance.
Even the most disciplined breeders are sometimestempted to use a bull’s mature height to predict framescore of his progeny. However, a bull’s actual matureheight is somewhat influenced by environmentalfactors and management practices. Beef breeders arestrongly encouraged to use EPD measurements suchas Yearling Height (YH) and Mature Height to ensurethey are making the most genetic progress to meettheir goals. The YH EPD, reported in inches, iscalculated using hip height measurements taken whenthe bull is around one year of age. Yearling HeightEPD has a strong positive correlationto mature height (.8), making the YHEPD very useful when selecting formature frame size.
Two Select Sires bulls that sort theirway to the top of the list for largerstature and mature size are 7AN234
Rito 1I2 and 7AN258 TCTotal. These bulls share thesame mature height (57.5inches) but they have verydifferent EPDs for YH (Table1). For example, when twogroups of cattle with similargenetics and managementare randomly mated to thesetwo bulls, you would expectcalves sired by TC Total to bean average of one-half inch(or ¼ frame score) taller at ayear of age.
When selecting bulls for anytrait, including stature andframe size, it is imperative touse genetic prediction toolssuch as EPDs and EBVs.Using the actual matureheight of the bull as aselection tool decreases theaccuracy of selection vs.EPDs. Using both the EPD and the actual matureheight overemphasizes the bull’s own performanceand underemphasizes the performance of relativesand progeny. Breeders should focus on using EPDs astheir main selection tool whenever possible in orderto achieve maximum genetic progress.

Using Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) is thefastest way to make genetic improvement in beefcattle. Breed associations calculate EPDs using vastamounts of data collected on economically importanttraits. The power of this data is tremendous. EPDvalues are derived from:
1. The individual’s own performance record2. Progeny records3. Records of other relatives in the pedigree4. Genetic correlations of traits
As progeny records are added to a sire’s record, theaccuracy of the EPD increases. EPDs values are notexact and actual progeny differences will vary fromthe predicted values. Breeders are encouraged to useproven bulls with high accuracies more heavily thanyoung bulls with low accuracies.
Although the EPDs reported in sire summaries mightvary by breed, most breed associations commonlyreport these traits:
Calving EaseBirth WeightWeaning WeightYearling WeightScrotal CircumferenceMilkCarcass Traits
EPD - Expected Progeny Difference - The expecteddifference in performance of an animal’s progenycompared to the expected performance of another’sprogeny. EPDs are meaningless until they arecompared to EPDs of another animal. For example, ifSire A has a birth weight EPD of 4.0 and Sire B hasa birth weight EPD of -2.0, then calves from Sire Bwould be expected to average 6 pounds lighter atbirth than calves from Sire A if the bulls are randomlymated in the same herd. EPDs are designed tocompare sires within the same breed.
Acc. - Accuracy - A measure of reliability of an EPDexpressed between 0 and 1.0. Accuracies closer to1.0 means the EPD is a more reliable estimate of asire’s true genetic value for the trait.
% Rank - Based on percentages, this indicateswhere an EPD ranks in the breed population.
CED or CE - Calving Ease Direct is the difference inpercentage of unassisted births when a sire is bred toheifers. A higher number is desirable.
BW - Birth Weight EPD predicts the difference inaverage birth weight. Reported in pounds, a lowernumber is desirable and is associated with increasedcalving ease.
WW - Weaning Weight EPD predicts the differencein average 205-day weight. Reported in pounds, ahigher number is desirable.
YW - Yearling Weight EPD predicts the difference inaverage 365-day weight and is reported in pounds.
YH - Yearling Height (Angus) - The YH EPD predictsthe difference in yearling hip height. Reported ininches, ideal values vary depending on productiongoals and desired mature size of animals.
SC - Scrotal Circumference - The SC EPD predicts thedifference in yearling scrotal circumference of a bull’smale progeny. Reported in centimeters, a largernumber is desirable.
CEM or MCE - Calving Ease Maternal is expressedas a difference in percentage of unassisted births of asire’s daughters as first-calf heifers. Reported as apercentage, a higher value is desirable.
Milk - The milk EPD predicts the difference inaverage 205-day weight of a bull’s daughters’calves. Reported in pounds, ideal milk values dependheavily upon the nutritional environment of the herd.
MWW - Maternal Weaning Weight (Simmental);M&G - Milk and Growth (Hereford); TM - TotalMaternal (Red Angus) - The EPD predicts theWeaning Weight of a bull’s daughters’ progeny andreflects both the milking ability of a bull’s daughtersand the growth potential of their calves. Reported inpounds, higher numbers are generally desirable.
$EN - Cow Energy Value (Angus), expressed indollars saved per cow per year, the EPD assessesdifferences in cow energy requirements for daughtersof sires. A larger value is more favorable whencomparing two animals (more dollars saved on feedenergy expenses). $EN savings differences accountfor lactation energy requirements and mature size ofcows.
Stay - Stayability (Red Angus & Simmental) - Thestayability EPD predicts the probability of a bull’sdaughters staying in production to at least six yearsof age. Reported as a percentage, a higher value isdesirable.
Carcass Traits - Carcass EPDs are calculated forcarcass weight, marbling, ribeye area and fatthickness using weighted averages of yearlingultrasounds and progeny carcass data.
Economic Indexes - designed to exploit the valueand convenience of multi-trait selection, economicindexes merge several EPDs into a single value andare expressed in US dollars. Several breeds publisheconomic indexes that are often associated with aspecific phase of production or a suite of traits forwhich the breed excels. Examples include growth, maternal ability, carcass merit and combinations ofthese.
