Atlas, established on Howard Avenue in 1908 by Edward Burgess with 12 employees, was a forerunner of Allegheny-Ludlum Steel Corporation (now Al-Tech). We know they resided in Silver Creek at this time, so after we studied their pictures as youth (in fact, Clifford was very young—born 6 December 1902) we wondered if they commuted to work or boarded in Dunkirk. We then noted that several names appeared of those known to live in Brocton, Forestville and other outlying areas. Several women were included in the work force with departments listed such as hammer mill, crucible melt and wire drawing. Most women were designated office, laboratory, restaurant, or janitor. Olive Meister’s department was welfare, and B. Fuller’s was engineering. In examining women’s records, some, such as Vivian Ross Grammon and R. M. Heppel Hieghts, had crossed out maiden names and written in married names. Names were changed for reasons other than marriage. Two of the four men named Gracrykowski had changed the name to Layman. We wondered if this was the reason we are acquainted with several people named Layman, an no one named Gracrykowski. We had no guess as to why one card had the name Geo. C. Watters crossed out and the name Charles J. Griggs written in. The cards had numbers: 1, 2 or 3 in the upper right. These seemed to indicate time periods at which new cards were issued. Most of the cards in the were # 3. The # 2 cards included dates of issue, and a very few included fingerprints. In this issue we have included 10 extra pages. These additional pages have made it possible for us to also include the SURNAME LIST submitted by our membership as of February 15th. Several members who have paid dues since that date will not be on this listing and we regret these ommissions, but time limitations gave us no choice, we had to set a deadline. The ANCESTRAL FILE program is new to our society but similar programs have been well received in other places. We know that the data collected and organized within these programs can be of help to our society members as well as other genealogical researchers using the D. R. Barker library. We hope that all of our members who have not already done so will take the time now to submit their personal data. We have also included a membership application form. This form may be used to update your previously filed application (update your SURNAME RESEARCH list, make address correction, etc.), or to enlist new members. Any of these pages may be copied as needed.

The Historical Society of Dunkirk has an impressive

building located at 513 Washington Avenue in that city. In

addition to some excellent exhibits on the history of Dunkirk,

it also has some surprises for the genealogist. With help

from Lois Woelfle and John A. Nowak, we found one of

these surprises in an alphabetized file. This file contained

1263 identification cards from 1917-18 employees of Atlas

Crucible Steel Company. Atlas, established on Howard

Avenue in 1908 by Edward Burgess with 12 employees, was

a forerunner of Allegheny-Ludlum Steel Corporation (now

Al-Tech). Atlas was designated as a defense plant during

World War I. Each employee was issued a War Department

identification which included his or her name, the section

of the plant to which that worker was assigned, and the

employee’s picture. The back of the card states that the

worker must show this identification in order to enter his workplace.

We spent more than an six hours looking through the file. One usually looks

first for their own surname. We were sure no one named Barris would have worked

there, so did not follow that usual practice, and were greatly surprised to find that

Clifford and Leslie Barris were included in the file. We know they resided in Silver

Creek at this time, so after we studied their pictures as youth (in fact, Clifford was

very young—born 6 December 1902) we wondered if they commuted to work or

boarded in Dunkirk. We then noted that several names appeared of those known

to live in Brocton, Forestville and other outlying areas.

Several women were included in the work force with departments listed such

as hammer mill, crucible melt and wire drawing. Most women were designated

office, laboratory, restaurant, or janitor. Olive Meister’s department was welfare,

and B. Fuller’s was engineering. In examining women’s records, some, such as

Vivian Ross Grammon and R. M. Heppel Hieghts, had crossed out maiden names

and written in married names. Names were changed for reasons other than marriage.

Two of the four men named Gracrykowski had changed the name to Layman. We

wondered if this was the reason we are acquainted with several people named

Layman, an no one named Gracrykowski. We had no guess as to why one card had

the name Geo. C. Watters crossed out and the name Charles J. Griggs written in.

The cards had numbers: 1, 2 or 3 in the upper right. These seemed to indicate time

periods at which new cards were issued. Most of the cards in the were # 3. The #

2 cards included dates of issue, and a very few included fingerprints.

After admiring youthful pictures of several people we had known as

distinguished citizens later in life (including a next-door neighbor, our high school

principal, a Methodist lay minister, and the parents of several of our contemporaries)

we concluded that our society members will also enjoy this file. To peak your

marked that name with a (m) or (f). There was an existing index which was a great help. We used that as a starting point, editing, adding

& subtracting. Some names on that list did not have a card to match. We have marked those with an asterisk, hoping they have only

temporarily disappeared. A few cards had surnames only, and we marked these (n. g.) for no given name. (#) following a name indicates

more than one individual with the same name. Ask to see the Atlas folder from the vertical file in the office and you will find newspaper

articles and some employee magazines. The magazines indicate a company involved with the community, and also yeilds genealogical

information such as the marriage of Andy and Stella Campbell (including a photo) and the birth of a son to Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Wykstra.

THE RAMSDELL FAMILY OF CHAUTAUQUA COUNTYBy Marion Wisniewski

This work is the result of three months of my “spare time” activity. It has been a labor of love, not because it was my family, but

for the thrill of finding information, pulling it together, and discovering hidden relationships, solving mysterious questions and always

finding new puzzles to work on. My favorite is a set of twins. Why are they named Lena and Louie in one census and Ada and Archie

in the next? This work is just the beginning, including an incomplete record of two generations of the Ramsdell family of Laona, Town

of Pomfret, Chautauqua County, NY. A year from now I hope to have the information on this family completed, corrected and noted.

The Ramsdell family came to Chautauqua from New England. The earliest record I was able to link with the Chautauqua Ramsdells

was in Guilford, Vermont. In the late 1600s, this family was well situated and politically active in the town of Brattleboro, Vermont. The

names William, David, Erastus and Charles had already begun to move through the lines of the family. Some Ramsdells moved to Maine,

but the line that ended up in Laona had moved into Connecticut by the late 1700s.

Erastus W. Ramsdell was born in Hartford, CT, 1 January 1787. He married first, Mehitable (b CT). They removed to Onieda Co.

NY by 1817, then to Exter, Otsego Co by 1820. Mehitable died in Madison Co. in 1823. Erastus then married Cordelia and returned to

Otsego where one child was born, then to Laona in 1828, where they remained.

Information on the children of Erastus Ramsdell was extracted from the Death/Marriage index at the Barker Library Historical

Museum, confirmed by Town of Pomfret records and Village of Fredonia vital records. Census records and newspaper accounts gave

additional information.

William B. Ramsdell is apparently the first born of Erastus and Mehitable, or at any rate the oldest to survive to the time of the

arrival of the family at Laona.

William B. married Mary E. Johnson, b c. 1819, Otsego Co. NY, d. 19 July 1909 in Laona. William and Mary moved to Canada where

their first child, Mary E. was born in 1840. Their next child, Delos D., was born in Wisconsin in 1844. Apparently they returned to New

York by 1849 as their next child, Ernest A. was born in Chautauqua in 1850.

By the 1860 census Mary had married a Luce and had two (known) children, Minnie and Claude. Mary

may have died by 1875 as the state census of that year lists Minnie and Claude with their Ramsdell

grandparents.

Delos married three times: first to Jennie Crocker of Pomfret NY on 14 May 1880. No record of her death

is found as yet, but by 1893, Delos married second at Laona, Fanny Gisel, b. Switzerland, a resident of

Jamestown. Fanny died in 1917 at are 54 and is buried in Laona Cemetery. Delos than married third, Esther

Kendall of Fredonia. Delos died in 1929 in Laona and Esther died 25 October 1932 at the home of her sister,

Mrs. R. B. Lawson of Portland, NY. Delos outlived his entire family, his will indicating his only remaining

heirs to be his brother, Ernest, and his nephew, Ernest’s son, Howard, both living in Russell, PA.

Ernest married Ida Boyd of Laona, 23 October 1873 at the home of the bride’s parents. They moved

to Pennsylvania and remained there. So far, I have found a record of only one child, Estella M. born c. 1873/

4, who married Fred C. Goldthwaite of Brocton NY, 16 December 1893.

Erastus Worthington Ramsdell 2nd, married twice: first on 31 December 1835 to Harriet Luce (b. 15 June 1815, d. ?), second, Sarah

M. Johnson (b. c. 1818 Broomfield, Madison Co. NY, d. 19 May 1892 Laona). Because the dates of Harriet’s death and the marriage

to Sarah were not found, it is not possible at this time to indicate which child is by which marriage with the exception of Calphurnia

who was born 30 September 1836 (d. 1903 in Laona). Erastus appears to have had only three children of his own that lived to be counted

in the censuses: Calphurnia, Harriet M. and David L. Erastus W. adopted at least four children. Two appear to have been brothers,

Erastus Rich and Frank E. Rich. Lena, b. 1860 in Sweden was the third and Floyd is acknowledged in an obituary as another brother

of David. Research to date has not uncovered a record of these adoptions, but it is felt that the Rich boys may have been related to

the Ramsdell family and this theory will be pursued.

Calphurnia married Alburtus Straight (b. 1833, d. 22 September 1899 at Laona). They had at least three

children: Frederick, b. 1858 Pomfret NY, Eugene, b. 1859 Pomfret, and Emma E. b 1863. Emma married several

times.

Harriet M. (1842-24 July 1911) married 21 September 1898 Charles W. Tennant, who had been married

before.

David L. (1844-1883) married first Ellen L, then Laura E., who became his widow. According to Hyde’s

History of 112th New York Volunteers, David enlisted in the unit at age 18 as a Bugler. He was discharged

9 January 1864 at Convalescent Camp VA. At the time of 1880 census, David and Ellen are living in the same

house as his brother, Frank and his father. They have five children listed: Della B., Anna, Louis, Hattie and

Dora. There is a twin sister to Louie in the 1875 census, but she is not in the 1880 list.

Harry Ramsdell (1817-19 July 1887) married three times: first, Candis/Candace Sage (b. 1822 Pomfret NY d 5 Mar. 1845 Laona ae

23y 8m 20d), buried in Laona Cemetery next to Harry; married second 19 November 1845, Lucinda Higbee of Cassadaga NY (b. Albany

Co. NY 1825, d 31 October 1863 in Laona); and third at the residence of Warren Felton, 19 February 1864, Mariah/ Maria Kingsley (b.

Hanover 1819, d. 31 December 1901 in Laona). Mariah outlived Harry is listed in the 1891/92 Kirwin’s directory living on Porter Ave.

Harry and Lucinda Higbee Ramsdell had three children: Charles A. b. 1847, later moved to Olean NY;

Mrya E. b. 1853, married Frank W. Corner of Titusville PA 26 October 1870, and later lived in London,

England; Jennie L. b. 1858, at age 16 married Rufus Parker 31 December 1874.

David S. Ramsdell (1820-1892) married 25 March 1840 Calphurnia P. Eaton at Laona. She was the daughter of Ebenezer Eaton of

Laona. Their children: Jack/Jackson D. Ramsdell (b. 1849, Pomfret) married Elizabeth Derby/Darby on 4 February 1869 at Laona; and

Hiram, the eldest b. 1839, but little is available in present records to indicate what happened to him.

This Ramsdell family married into many of the families that are still extant in this area. They were active members of the Laona Free

Thinkers Association, holding board positions, and were moving forces in the early days of the Spiritualist Community that still thrives

in the Town of Pomfret, Lily Dale, New York. This unique community remains devoted to the religion of Spiritualism and is visited by

thousands every year. Calphurnia Ramsdell Straight was recorded as a Trance Medium as early as 1853.

The two sons born to Erastus W. and Cordelia are identified by initials only, making research difficult, but not impossible. C. P.

b. Otsego Co. 1825 d on his farm between Mead and Petersburg, Virginia, 14 September 1882. The Fredonia Censor tells us, in his

obituary, that he had just visited his brother, David S. Ramsdell during the previous spring. C. P. and H. J. (Hiram ?) left Laona at the

same time to pursue their careers. C. P. became a U. S. Marshall in the Richmond (VA) district, while H. J. entered the journalistic field,

becoming Editor of the Tioga, PA, Agitator. H. J. joined the 6th PA Reserves when the Civil War broke out. In 1865 he joined the

Washington DC staff of the New York Tribune, served in that capacity for many years and died in Washington in May 1887.

And the search continues. Anyone having information on the Ramsdell family, please write to the address on the letterhead to

the attention of Marion Wisniewski. Also, anyone interested in further information that may be discovered about this family, include

a stamped self-addressed envelope with your request to the same address.

THE FORMATION OF CHAUTAUQUACOUNTY TOWNS 1804 -1918This information was extracted from Hist of C haut Co (1846)

by E F Warren and from Board of Supervisor’s minutes

Previous to 1804, the whole of present Chautauqua County

was part of the town of Batavia in the county of Genessee, but

in that year the town of Chautauque was incorporated, and

embraced the entire territory now included within the limits of the

County.

In March, 1808, the town of Chautauque was divided and

that of Pomfret erected. The tenth and eleventh ranges of

townships, from the Pennsylvania line to Lake Erie, and the fifth

and sixth townships in the twelfth range, including the present

towns of Carroll, Poland, Ellington, Cherry Creek, Villenova,

Hanover, Sheridan, Pomfret, Arkwright, Charlotte, Gerry, Ellicott

and a part of Busti, were embraced in the new town of Pomfret.

At this same time, the limits of the County were defined, and

the name given to it. The population did not then entitle it to be

fully organized as a separated County, and it was

therefore continued as a part of Genessee until 1811.

In June 1812, the towns of Ellicott, Gerry and

Hanover were incorporated. Ellicott included the

present towns of Carroll, Ellicott and Poland, and a part

of Busti, being the first and second townships in the

tenth and eleventh ranges of the Holland Land Company survey.

The Town of Gerry included the present towns of Gerry,

Ellington, Charlotte and Cherry Creek. Gerry had the same extent

of territory as, and laid immediately north of Ellicott.

Hanover included townships five and six of the eleventh

range, which are now in the towns of Villenova, Hanover, and

parts of Arkwright and Sheridan.

In 1813 the town of Portland was erected. It was taken from

Chautauque, and at its first organization embraced the territory

now included in the towns of Westfield, Portland and Ripley.

The towns of Harmony and Ripley were erected by the

Legislature in 1816. The former included the present town of

Harmony (including North Harmony) and a portion of Busti,

having for its northern boundary the line between the second

and third townships and the Chautauque Lake; for its eastern,

the line between the eleventh and twelfth ranges of townships;

for its southern, the Pennsylvania line; and for its western, the

line of townships between the thirteenth and fourteenth ranges,

according to the Holland Land Company’s survey.

The town of Ripley comprised the present town of that

name, and that part of Westfield which lies west of Chautauque

Creek.

The towns of Clymer, Stockton, and Ellery, were organized

in 1821. The former embraced the townships one and two in the

fourteenth and fifteenth ranges. Stockton included the fourth

township in the thirteenth range and one tier of lots from the third

township in the same range, and the same from the fourth

township in the thirteenth range. Ellery embraced that part of the

third township in the twelfth range, not included in Stockton, the

fractional part of township two in the same range lying northerly

of Chautauque Lake, and a small part of township three in the

thirteenth range, lying easterly of the Lake.

The towns of Busti and Villenova were organized in 1823.

The former was named for Paul Busti, the General Land Agent

of the Holland Land Company resident in the city of Philadelphia.

Busti included portions of the 1st townships in the eleventh and

twelfth ranges, lying south of Chautauque lake and between the

towns of Ellicott and Harmony was then organized, and taken in

part from each.

Villenova was taken from Hanover, and includes the fifth

township in the tenth range, according to the original survey.

Ellington and Mina were organized in 1824. Ellington

embraced the third and fourth townships in the tenth range,

taken from Gerry. Mina was taken from Clymer and included

townships two in the fourteenth and fifteenth ranges.

Carroll was organized in 1825, taken from Ellicott, and

occupies the southeasternmost portion of the County. It includes

the first township in the tenth range, and the east half of

township one in the eleventh range, except a tier of lots on the

north side which still forms part of Ellicott.

In 1827, the town of Sheridan was erected. It was taken from

Pomfret and Hanover, and includes the sixth

township in the eleventh range, excepting lots one,

two, three, and four, in the southeast corner, on a

portion of which the village of Forestville stands,

which remain attached to Hanover.

The towns of Westfield, Charlotte, Arkwright,

Cherry Creek, and French Creek were formed in 1829.

Westfield was taken from Ripley and Portland, and includes

parts of the third and fourth townships in the fourteenth range.

It is somewhat irregular in shape, bordering on Lake Erie on the

north and extending into the interior as far south as the north line

of the second tier of townships, within twelve miles of the

Pennsylvania line.

Charlotte was taken from Gerry and includes the entire

fourth township in the eleventh range.

Arkwright was taken from Pomfret and Villenova and

includes the fifth township in the eleventh range, excepting lot

sixty-four in the northwest corner, which remains attached to

Pomfret.

Cherry Creek was taken from Ellington and is equal to the

fourth township in the tenth range.

French Creek was taken from Clymer and is equal to the first

township in the fifteenth range, lying in the southwest corner of

the County, adjoining the Pennsylvania line.

In 1832 the town of Poland, equal to the second township

in the tenth range, was created by the Legislature and taken from

Ellicott.

Sherman, the second township in the fourteenth range, was

incorporated that same year, taken from the Town of Mina.

In 1845, an act of the Legislature enlarged the town of

Ellicott by annexing the northern tier of lots from township one

of the eleventh range. Four of these lots were taken from the town

of Busti and four from the town of Carroll.

In 1850, by act of the County Board of Supervisors, the town

of Stockton was enlarged by annexing from the town of Ellery

in township three, range twelve, the eastern four lots from

Ellery’s northern tier of lots.

“it was therefore

continued as a part of

Genessee until 1811.”

ATLAS STEEL EMPLOYEE LIST - cont. from page 23

Kiantone was formed from Carroll in 1853, taking the eastern

half of township one, range eleven, lying west of Connewango

Creek, except for the northern four lots given to Ellicott in 1845.

Dunkirk, in 1859, became the latest (prior to North Harmony

in 1918) and smallest of Chautauqua towns to be formed. It was

taken from the northern section of the town of Pomfret, leaving

Pomfret comprising all of township five and the entire two

southern tiers of lots in township six of the twelfth range.

And finally in 1918, North Harmony was taken from the

northern section of the town of Harmony comprising all of

township two of the thirteenth range and also lots 43 thru 54 in

township two of the twelfth range.

RECEIVING THE FGS-FORUM ??

The FGS-FORUM is a free quarterly magazine to individuals who

are members in good standing with a genealogical society which

is a member of the FEDERATION OF GENEALOGICAL

SOCIETIES. Our society is currently a member and therefore

each of our members should be receiving copies of this often

interesting publication. We can update our list only once per year

and we submitted our additions and deletions on April 1, 1990. If

any current members do not receive their copy of the SPRING

issue please let us know and we will attempt to rectify the

omission. We are informed that back issues cannot be made

available.

THE FAMILY SURNAME LIST

When joining our society, each member is asked to submit a list of family SURNAMES that have Chautauqua County connections.

A Chautauqua County connected name is one that was born, married, died, or lived in Chautauqua County or the immediate surrounding

area in western New York state or northwestern Pennsylvania. If you have not done so, we urge you to send your list or revised list

now.

A listing of the family SURNAMES submitted by current members as of 15 FEB 1990 has been included in this newsletter. They

are indexed with the membership number of the member who submitted that name. The directory of members, current as of 15 FEB 1990,

will point you to the person to contact.

HOW TO SUBMIT FAMILY RECORDS TO THE C.C.G.S. ANCESTRAL FILE

1. For the sake of uniformity of our total file, we would prefer that you copy and use the ancestral chart that we developed

for the project and have included in the newsletter. Enter your name (or choose a member of your family) as number one

on the Ancestral (pedigree) Chart. This person (hopefully one with genealogical connections to Chautauqua county)

should appear as a child on the first Family Group Record.

2. A Family Group Record Form should be prepared for each of the couples in the four generations listed on the ancestral

chart (seven total family group records). Any 8.5 X 11 Family Group Forms in a vertical format (most are quite similar)

will be acceptable, but you are free to copy and use the Family Group Form included in this newsletter.

3. Accuracy and uniformity are stressed. Verification and documentation should be done for all names, dates, and places.

Be thorough, but reasonable.

4. List your sources of information in the spaces provided on each Family Group Form (attaching a separate sheet if

additional space is required). You should give enough details so that someone else seeing the record, could find the

original source of that information.

5. Proofread everything for accuracy

6. Submit the Ancestral (pedigree) Chart and the seven Family Group Records to:

Chautauqua County Genealogical Society

P. 0. Box 404

Fredonia, New York 14063

7. Your records will be indexed and put into a binder available to other researchers at the Garland Genealogy Library of

the Historical Museum, D. R. Barker Library, 7 Day St., Fredonia, N.Y.

NEWSLETTER DEADLINES

All Queries for insertion in our quarterly newsletters must be received no later than the 15th of that month preceding the publication

date. Therefore any item received after April 15th will not appear in the MAY news letter. Be assured that items received before July

15th will be considered for the AUGUST letter. All material (anecdotes, biographies, original articles, etc.) which you would like to see

published in our newsletter should be sent to the publication committee for their consideration.
