Michigan State University’s Usability/Accessibility Research and Consulting (UARC) welcomes you to the 10th anniversary of Michigan’s annual World Usability Day. The international theme this year is Engagement, but the Michigan conference is also covering other usability and accessibility topics relevant to IT and UX professionals. We encourage you to engage in the thought-provoking discussions during the speaking sessions both in person and on Twitter using the two hashtags of #MiWUD and #WUD2014.

About World Usability DayWorld Usability Day is the largest gathering of practitioners, academics, government experts, and students facilitating the progression of usability, user experience, and user-centered design. In 2013, the World Usability Day community held over 110 events in more than 32 countries. During the past five years, over 1,500 conference participants from all parts of North America, representing industry, government, and academia, have attended the annual event at Michigan State University. World Usability Day was founded to explore ways to ensure that the services and products important to life are easier to access and simpler to use.

ParkingIt is recommended that attendees park across Grand River Ave. in City of East Lansing surface lots and parking structures. Information about East Lansing parking can be found at: cityofeastlansing.com/ParkingDowntown

Parking is also available in the nearby MSU Grand River Ave. Ramp (Ramp 6). Please note that parking in this structure is metered, which will require “feeding the meter” throughout the morning.

Please note: You will be responsible for the cost of parking.

Open House at UARCAn open house will be held from 1:00–3:00 p.m. today at Usability/Accessibility Research and Consulting’s facilities in the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center, 219 S. Harrison Road, Room 93.

Program DetailRegistration8:00 a.m. – 8:30 a.m.

Opening Remarks8:30 a.m. – 8:35 a.m.

Designing and Building the User Experience8:35 a.m. – 9:10 a.m.Scott Wilthew • Jackson National Life Insurance Co.

It is possible for a business to experience benefits from its “digital investments” by incorporating User Experience (UX) methodologies at various stages during the project lifecycle. Alignment with key project milestones allows UX best practices to be tied directly to a traditional systems development methodology (SDM), creating an overall process that results in tangible gains—as seen through comprehensive requirements documentation, tighter process control, and improved customer satisfaction. This presentation examines how UX best practices have enhanced the SDM at one of America’s fastest-growing annuity providers.

Mobile Accessibility9:10 a.m. – 9:40 a.m.Gian Wild • AccessibilityOz

Gian Wild will be speaking about how to make your mobile sites accessible. WCAG2 was written before mobile devices were ubiquitous, and there are some accessibility issues unique to the mobile format, such as lack of keyboard, lack of mouse hover, and reduced screen size. Gian will be talking about the most common problems and how you can avoid them.

Break9:40 a.m. – 10:10 a.m.

Mobile First Government10:10 a.m. – 10:45 a.m.Jim Taylor, Kurt Opel, Matt Dempsey • Oakland County

The most disruptive shift in the digital media marketplace has been the shift from desktop to mobile platforms (Comscore 2014). In this session Oakland County provides a strategy for Mobile-First development and usability using a hybrid approach. We share some of the components required and a development approach we have used for successful implementation of a Mobile-First web and application initiative.

Engaging Mobile Automotive Shoppers10:45 a.m. – 11:20 a.m.Jodi Bollaert • MRM/McCann

In recent years, the enormous growth in popularity of mobile devices as a tool for accessing the Internet has created opportunities to conduct research that helps us understand what works and doesn’t work from a visual, content, and interaction design standpoint. This interactive presentation focuses on key learnings from a mobile automotive shopping context that may apply to your industry as well. In addition, this talk touches on mobile research methods that don’t require elaborate time or expense.

Leveraging Human Behavior to Drive Engagement11:20 a.m. – 11:55 a.m.Erik Wesslen • TechSmith

Designers across the world continue to strive to develop engaging user experiences. Only by understanding human behavior and what drives usage can we begin to create truly engaging experiences. This talk explores areas of human behavior that are applicable to experience design and hopes to empower attendees with concepts that can immediately be put to use.

Closing Remarks11:55 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
