The two authors, Feridun Zaimoglu and Günter Senkel, pay artistic tribute to Siegfried Wagner on the 150th anniversary of his birth. Richard Wagner’s son was a composer, conductor, director, set designer and, from 1908 to 1930, the Bayreuth Festival’s general administrator. Tirelessly creative, he was virtually unique in his versatility. The authors present him at two critical turning points in his life: first, on 1 August 1914, the day on which war was declared in Germany, and, second, immediately before his death on 4 August 1930. “He becomes visible to us as someone who tells his own story,” explains Feridun Zaimoglu. “He holds the floor and tells us all about himself. Our concern is the artist who said ‘I served only art’. Our aim is to depict him as an autonomous protagonist involved in various episodes in contemporary history, someone engaged in ensuring the survival of art both as an artist and as a fighter.” A Bayreuth Festival commission, SIEGFRIED was written by Feridun Zaimoglu and Günter Senkel. It will be performed for the first time at the Reichshof Kulturbühne on 13 August 2019. Siegfried Wagner may have visited the former cinema in the heart of Bayreuth, built in 1927, as a spectator himself. SIEGFRIED SPRICHT

In einem Monolog kommt der erste Erbe Bayreuths selbst zu Wort. Die Autoren Feridun Zaimoglu und Günter Senkel würdigen Siegfried Wagner anlässlich seines 150. Geburtstags auf künstlerische Weise. Der Sohn Richard Wagners war Komponist, Dirigent, Regisseur, Szenograf und Festspielleiter von 1908 bis 1930. Ein Künstler, der mit einem unermüdlichen Schaffen so vielseitig war, wie kaum jemand seiner Zunft.

Die Autoren zeigen ihn in zwei wegweisenden Situationen - am Tag der deutschen Kriegserklärung 1. August 1914 und am 4. August 1930 unmittelbar vor seinem Tod. „Er wird sichtbar als einer, der seine Geschichte erzählt. Er ergreift das Wort und erklärt sich selbst.“, so Feridun Zaimoglu: „Es geht uns um den Künstler, der sagte: ‚Ich diente allein der Kunst‘, es geht darum, ihn als autonomen Akteur zu zeigen, der in verschiedenen Zusammenhängen der Zeitgeschichte agiert, als jemand, den das Fortbestehen der Kunst umtreibt, als Künstler und Kämpfer.“

Das Auftragswerk SIEGFRIED von Feridun Zaimoglu und Günter Senkel wird am 13.8.2019 in der Kulturbühne Reichshof uraufgeführt. Siegfried Wagner hat das 1927 erbaute, ehemalige Kino im Herzen Bayreuths womöglich selbst als Zuschauer besucht.
