NORTH AMERICA includes Canada,

the United States of America, Mexico,

Central America and the Caribbean islands,

as well as the largest island in the world,

Greenland. In the sparsely populated north,

the thick Arctic ice gives way to the barren

tundra of northern Canada. The Rocky

Mountains run down from Alaska to

Mexico, while the forested Appalachians

dominate the eastern USA. In the fertile

lowlands of the Mississippi basin and the

eastern seaboard, farms produce huge

amounts of crops such as maize and wheat.

Further south are the hot, dry deserts of

southwestern USA and Mexico.

Most people in North America are

descendants of settlers from other parts of

the world, the first of whom, the

Europeans, arrived in the 16th century.

Many Native American peoples lost their

lands and their lives to the new arrivals.

Today, the small groups of Native Americans

that remain have their own territories.

Many, especially the Inuit of northern

Canada, still follow a traditional way of life.

New England is a

region com

prising

the six states of the

northeastern corner

of the United States.

It was one of the

first areas settled by

Europeans and has

many historic

buildings. It is

famous for the

colours of its trees

in the fall (autum

This scarlet macawis one of themany birds ofthe rain -forest.

Some rainforest peoples live inone part of the forest for awhile, where they hunt andgrow basic crops, andthen move on to anothersite to give the soil achance to recover. Asmore and more of theforest is cut down, their homelandsare depleted. Theyhave also sufferedfrom persecutionand illness asoutsiders havemoved into theforest.

AMAZON RAINFORESTThe Amazon basin is the largest area ofrainforest in the world. Many kinds ofplants and animals live there, and newspecies are constantly being discovered. Themighty Amazon River and its tributariesflow through the forest, providing a vital

transport route and source of food for thenative peoples who live in forest villages. Afew of these peoples still follow a traditionalway of life, hunting, fishing and growingcrops. Many also take advantage of moderntechnology, such as engines for their boats. Today, the rainforest is disappearing at an

alarming rate, because of logging for thetimber industry, roadbuilding, and clearingspace for cattle farming or crop planting. The poor-quality rainforest soil means thatit cannot support grazing or crops for longbefore the farmers must move on to newareas. So even more of the forest is lost.

SOUTH AMERICA

SOUTH AMERICA is a continent ofextremes. The world’s longest mountainrange, the Andes, stretches along the westcoast. Between the snow-capped mountainslies a high, cold and windswept plain calledthe altiplano. Between the Andes and thePacific Ocean coast is the Atacama Desert, the driest place on earth. Rain may not fallhere for hundreds of years at a time. In the north, most people live near the

Caribbean coast or in the mountains.Further inland, the vast rainforests of theAmazon basin dominate. The Amazon Riveroriginates in the Andes, and winds its wayeastwards through Peru and Brazil beforereaching the AtlanticOcean. To the east of the

Amazon rainforestlie the BrazilianHighlands. Furthersouth are wide areasof fertile grasslands, known as pampas, which cover parts ofArgentina andUruguay. In theextreme south of

Argentina, grasslands give way to the dry, bleak scrublands of Patagonia. The southernAndes is an region of glaciers andvolcanoes, breaking up into bleak, rockyislands at its tip. Many people in South America are

descended from Europeans, especially theSpanish and Portuguese, who began toarrive during the 15th century. Most SouthAmerican people today still speak theselanguages. Others are descendents of Africanslaves brought over by the Europeans. Thenumbers of native peoples of SouthAmerica fell dramatically after the arrival ofthe Europeans, but some still live in themountains and the rainforest, keeping theirown languages and traditions.

Rio de Janeiro, or “January River” (below), lies on the coast ofBrazil. It was named after the month in which Portugueseexplorer Goncalo Coelho sailed into its bay in 1503. A greatcity has since grown up beneath the famous Sugar Loafmountain. In the 19th century, Rio de Janeiro was animportant port trading gold and diamonds mined in the interiorof the country. Today, poverty-stricken shanty towns cluster onthe outskirts, crowded with people desperate for work.

EUROPE

EUROPE is a dense patchwork ofnations. The continent is actually part of

a single land-mass that also includes Asia, but there are also a number of islands. Alarge part of Russia and a small part ofTurkey are also included within Europe. In the far north, Europe borders the

Arctic Ocean. Frozen tundra merges intothe vast coniferous forests of Russia andScandinavia. The Gulf Stream, a warmocean current, gives the northwesterncountries a mild, wet climate. CentralEurope and Russia have hot summers butcold winters. To the south, beyond themountain ranges of the Pyrenees and theAlps, lie the sunny Mediterranean lands.Europe is, for the most part, densely

populated. Waterways and road and railnetworks link its major cities. Much of itsland is under cultivation or pasture. Only afew large areas of uninhabited land remainin the north.Compared to other parts of the world,

European countries are wealthy, though theWest is generally more prosperous. Throughhistory, conflicts have flared between andwithin countries. Several have split intosmaller, independent nations in recent years.

Europe has a long history, and many oldbuildings from hundreds of years ago arestill standing today. These buildings inBruges, Belgium (below), date back tomedieval times.

People who originate from manydifferent parts of the world now live inEurope. Countries such as England, Franceand Spain once ruled much of America,Africa and Asia. Many people from thesecontinents have now settled in Europe, giving it a rich variety of cultures.

ASIA

ASIA is the largest continent. Thenorthern part is taken up entirely by

Russia, where icy tundra and coniferousforests dominate the landscape. Furthersouth are the barren grasslands, or steppes,of Central Asia. These merge into vast areasof desert that are bitterly cold in winter.Much of southwest Asia, known as the

Middle East, is also covered by desert, butthis is hot, dry and often sandy. South of theworld’s highest mountain range, theHimalayas, the countries of southern Asiahave a monsoon climate. Long periods ofhot, dry weather are followed by heavyrains. To the southeast, a peninsula reachesout towards the many islands of Indonesia, where important areas of dense tropicalrainforest are found.Large areas of Asia are virtually

uninhabited, but Asia still has much thelargest population of any continent. In thesouth and east, several countries havebecome wealthy from their rich reserves ofoil or their successful technologicalindustries. In many other countries, however, poverty is rife. Most people farmfor a living, and are vulnerable to floods ordroughts. Asian cities are growing larger asmore and more people move in from thecountryside to try to find work.

OCEANIA

STRETCHING ACROSS a vast regionof the Pacific Ocean, Oceania is madeup of the large island of Australia (almost acontinent in itself) together with NewZealand, Papua New Guinea and thousandsof small Pacific islands.Much of Australia is covered with hot,

dry desert and flat, open grassland known asthe outback. Most people live in towns andcities near the coasts, especially the southcoast. Papua New Guinea, in contrast, is acountry of high mountains and denserainforests. Many tribes of native peopleslive in mountain valleys so isolated that theyhave only recently come into contact withthe outside world.New Zealand is made up of two islands,

the north of which is warm and volcanic, while the south island is cooler, withmountains and forests. The grassy lowlandsare fertile, and ideal for farming. The remoteposition of New Zealand, and also ofAustralia and Papua New Guinea, meansthat they are home to animals that are notfound anywhere else in the world.

The Pacific islands are the remains ofvolcanoes that have erupted beneath theocean. Some islands, such as Hawaii, stillhave active volcanoes. The islands aregrouped together into nations. Some ofthese are independent, while others, such asNew Caledonia, are colonies of Europeancountries or the USA. Many Pacific islandsare very beautiful, with rich vegetation anda warm climate. This makes them populartourist destinations, and also gives themplenty of fertile land for farming crops.

The world’s longest coral reef, the GreatBarrier reef, stretches for 2000 kilometresalong the northeastern coast of Australia.

The rainforest is home to many differentplants and animals, including gorillas andchimpanzees. Many rivers weave their waythrough central Africa. To the east and southare large areas of open grassland scatteredwith trees, known as savanna. Animals suchas elephants, zebra and wildebeest, roam thesavanna, along with predators such as lions, wild dogs and hyenas.

A F R I C A N P E O P L E SNorth of the Sahara desert, the people ofAfrica are mainly Arabs and Berbers, whofollow the religion of Islam. South of theSahara, most people are black. They follow avariety of religions. Much of Africa was atone time controlled by Europe, and todaypeople of European descent still live there, mostly in the south.Africa exports its natural resources of

metals and oil, as well as crops such ascoffee and cocoa. However, many Africancountries are poor compared to the rest ofthe world. Few have establishedmanufacturing industries. Most people livein the countryside, and rely on producingonly enough crops, or farming enoughcattle to support their families. They sufferfrom frequent droughts, floods and periodsof starvation. Wars between and withincountries also threaten their lives.

SAHARA DESERT

THE WORLD’S largest desert, theSahara stretches across an area of

Northern Africa that is almost the size ofthe USA. It is constantly growing larger asthe sparse grassland at its edges dies away. The Sahara is a hot desert, where rain mayfail to fall for years on end. During the day, temperatures can reach over 50˚C in theshade, but nights are often cold. There areareas of sand that often drift into largedunes, but much of the Sahara is made upof rocky ground and mountains.Despite these harsh conditions, the Sahara

desert is not without life. Animals that arespecially adapted for life with little waterand intense heat can survive there. Manytake shelter in burrows during the day, coming out at night to feed. People also live in the Sahara desert.

Small towns are able to survive around oasesin the desert. Groups of nomads also travelacross the harsh landscape to trade in thetown markets. For thousands of years, theycarried their goods and supplies by camel,an animal that can cope extremely wellwith desert life. It also provided the nomadswith milk and meat. Today motor vehiclesare more often used to cross the desert.

An oasis is a place in the desert wherewater comes up from beneath the ground. Here the land is fertile, and crops such asdates and olives can begrown. Towns are builtaround oases, formingstopping-off points ondesert roads.
