I wish you a warm welcome to the Panasonic Automotive Innovation Summit (AIS) 2016, held in Barcelona – a smart city and hub for electrical vehicles.

Now in its fourth consecutive year, the Automotive Innovation Summit continues to establish itself as an award-winning benchmark event in the industry calendar. 2016 is no exception, as the event offers an outstanding line-up of high-profile speakers from a diversity of automotive disciplines, along with the opportunity to explore new and emerging technologies, and a chance to network with peers and colleagues from within your sector.

As a platform on which to discuss smarter technologies for a connected mobile workforce, AIS 2016 will focus our collective attention on the key theme of ‘Mobility of the Future’, with close consideration of its related solutions and applications. Connectivity will also be a key topic, as will brand loyalty, autonomous driving, reducing vehicle development costs, and consolidation of production platforms. Of course, the full list of topics we’ll be covering ranges far more widely, and is explained in full in the agenda on pages 5-6.

Today’s specialist speakers and comprehensive subject matter could never be achieved without the invaluable input of our sponsors and supporters. We would like to extend a special thanks to our main partners and please take time to visit everyone that is supporting our Exhibitor Village this year, it’s a great networking opportunity.

From a Panasonic point of view, we’re delighted to have representation from almost all of our professional departments, particularly Computer Product Solutions, Panasonic Automotive Systems America, and Visual System Solutions. From this unified standpoint, we will be looking at how Panasonic is facilitating Industry 4.0 – the market trend bringing digitisation into the automotive manufacturing arena, thanks to the Internet of Things (IoT). We’ll explore how our tailored and digitally-connected Toughbook and Toughpad solutions are being successfully rolled out across assembly maintenance, parts management and logistics, and end-of-line testing operations, in order to optimise workflows, minimise inputting errors, and reduce costly downtime.

Finally, I want to thank you for your attendance at AIS 2016. The success of the event is driven by our collective input, so you’re encouraged to contribute to every session. I would also like to invite all the feedback you are able to offer – armed with this knowledge we can go on enhancing and improving our event every year. So please, enjoy the day and evening festivities!

Yours sincerely,

Russell Younghusband Sales Director – Computer Products Division Panasonic Marketing Europe

Formula Ford and Toughpad FZ-M1 driving success in the toughest of championships

The perfect environment for motorsport’s future driver champions to hone their talents, the 2014 Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship is contested and televised at 10 events, across 30 races making it the most attractive junior single-seater series in the UK.

Nigel Jones, the Motor Sports Association Technical Delegate for Formula Ford, is in charge of scrutineering and technical eligibility at the races. His essential tool for the job is the Panasonic Toughpad FZ-M1 tablet, which makes his role as the official rule keeper of technical specifications much easier.

The latest cars have an Electronic Control Unit (ECU), which controls the engine and records all the car performance data during the course of the weekend. Nigel can plug the FZ-M1 into the car’s ECU at any point to check that the cars are meeting regulations.

Data recorded includes information such as revolutions per minute, speed, engine and oil temperatures. In the event of an engine problem, the scrutineers can also use the Toughpad tablet to help diagnose specific issues for the drivers and their mechanics.

Perfect for the race environment“For the environment that we work in, the Toughpad is perfect,” says Nigel. “It’s so compact and easy to carry around, so I have all the data and information I need at my fingertips wherever I am during the meeting.”

“The flexible specification is ideal for tailoring the tablet to meet your needs. We use an Ethernet connection for downloading data from the cars and the USB connection for fast exchange of data. The stylus enables me to work accurately with forms and information on the screen using Windows 8 Pro.”

“I trust the Panasonic Toughpad tablet implicitly,” says Nigel. “It is very reliable and I can be using it consistently from Friday afternoon through to Sunday on a race weekend. With its hot swappable battery option, I can change the battery on the hoof and just carry on, without having to turn the device off and without losing time or data. It works in all the weathers and difficult conditions we can throw at it and the screen clarity is perfect.”

MAN Truck & Bus provides an extensive programme to support core processes in the workshop. One element of this programme is the excellent service using specialised tools that MAN offers in its own workshops and via service partners. In the highly complex area of vehicle diagnostics and programming, MAN is establishing a new benchmark with its maintenance solution, MAN-cats® (MAN-computer assisted testing and diagnostic system). The Panasonic Toughbook CF-53 forms the heart of the new MAN-cats® solution.

MAN was founded in 1758 and achieved 2013 revenues of around €15.66 billion, with 53,509 employees. MAN Truck & Bus AG, which is based in Munich, is the largest company in the MAN group and one of Europe’s leading makers of commercial vehicles. MAN has been part of the Volkswagen Group since 2011.

MAN Truck & Bus AG has been using Panasonic Toughbook computers since 2005 in the after-sales area as part of the commercial vehicle diagnostics and programming system MAN-cats®. The specialised MAN-cats® tool provides users with the maximum depth of testing for commercial vehicles, buses and bus chassis, as well as MAN standalone engines.

Today, there are about 7000 MAN-cats® systems in use in several thousand locations worldwide. In 2012, MAN changed over to the CF-53, which fulfils two functions like its predecessors, the CF-51 and the CF-52.

First, the mechanics use the Toughbook to read the trucks’ and buses’ memory, enabling them to detect and resolve any errors. Second, the CF-53 serves as an IT platform to reprogramme the MAN vehicles’ control systems after they have been repaired and to update their software.

Before switching to the Panasonic Toughbook devices, MAN used consumer laptops. However, as they were not ruggedised, they were often damaged by being dropped, banged or bumped. “Commercial vehicle workshops are very demanding on computers,” explains Claus-Hendrik Rietschel, Team Leader for MAN-cats® Security, User Administration & Hardware Order Management.

“If a consumer laptop was dropped during a diagnostic session, it was almost always defective afterwards. For that reason alone, these devices were just not suitable for a workshop.” In addition, MAN-cats® need to function reliably in the field, such as during breakdown assistance and at the Dakar Rally. The Panasonic laptops easily withstand drops, dust, grime and spills in the MAN workshops, as well as extreme weather conditions when they are used in snowy or desert conditions.

Commenting on the benefits of Panasonic’s strong customer focus, Rietschel adds: “As well as having to work well in all climates, the Toughbook computers must also be certified in 120 countries. Panasonic takes our list of countries and handles the global certification process itself. That enables us to use the devices around the world with no problem. Panasonic is the only company able to provide us with global certification and service for ruggedised devices around the world.”

In the workshop and on the track: Toughbook CF-D1 in use at KTM

A renowned manufacturer of road and racing cars such as KTM places the highest demands on both its performance and the equipment it uses. Consequently, the Austrian company has earned more than 200 world championship titles in motorsport, supported by Panasonic Toughbook mobile computers.

KTM Sport Motorcycle AG, based in Mattighofen, Austria, develops and produces race-ready, off-road and street motorcycles and ATVs. From the materials and technology it uses, KTM expects nothing less than the best – whether that’s in development within partner workshops or especially on the track, where even the smallest improvement can be the difference between winning and losing a title.

As vehicle technology develops, including that found in motorcycles, so there is a greater need for diagnostics. However, the control devices need to be adapted, which requires a reconfiguration of the diagnostic solution. Due to the discrepancies between the solution used, their own requirements and the available options in the market, KTM decided to upgrade to a new generation of diagnostics, which is now offered as a standard solution with a comprehensive hardware platform.

For the most accurate vehicle diagnostics, KTM is now using a complete software solution offering by AVL DiTEST, a scan box for connection to the vehicle and the Toughbook CF-D1, a fully rugged professional tablet.

“We have looked at other products, but realised quickly that Panasonic is the only option,” says Andreas Breit, responsible for the diagnostic system at KTM. “The quality is critical for us and here the Toughbook computers are simply beyond reproach.

“A normal laptop is not suitable for workshops. Computers are used as a tool and are sometimes subject to dust or shock-impacts from drops or bumps. Outside, the display must be easy to read even in direct sunlight. When it comes to the race track, considerable dust and moisture are added to the challenge, because our bikes compete mainly in the field.”

The service itself shows the good customer focus of Panasonic. “The cooperation is very straightforward and positive,” Andrew summarises. “We have developed a workflow at KTM, just in case a device should fail. In that case, we send the workshop or the partner a Toughbook from our equipment pool and pass the defective unit on to Panasonic. Due to the fast response time and low failure rate, we expect less downtime and greater efficiency. Through the combination of reliability and great customer service we benefit from lower total cost of ownership (TCO).

“Panasonic’s total package of robust features, good value for money and quality means we are completely convinced of its support.”

Optimise your diagnostic efficiencyAs vehicles become ever-more complex, high-performing technology is required to ensure maximum efficiency in your diagnostics processes. However, that technology must be capable of operating away from the workbench and provide the technician with uninterrupted full-shift operation, working around the vehicle in the workshop, by the side of the road or in a muddy field and used like any other tool in the technician’s kit bag without fear of failure.

Through listening to the leading vehicle manufacturers, we have integrated rugged USB connectors to stand up to the high level of insertions required when connecting to the vehicle interface or specialised measurement equipment. Toughbook and Toughpad devices are certified and available globally to meet the needs of your worldwide dealer operations.

Revolutionise your service receptionWith Toughpad, queues become a thing of the past and your workshop reception can operate more effectively than ever before. With the growing trend for dealers to empower their service reception advisors to proactively meet and greet the customer at the side of the vehicle, it has proven to increase satisfaction scores and generate upselling opportunities and increased revenue from every customer visit.

Crucially, the lightweight, robust design of the Toughpad range encourages free mobile working conditions to allow the service adviser to perform quick on-the-spot vehicle health checks outdoors, no matter what the weather conditions. The customer can quickly be informed of any underlying issues with the vehicle and be provided with a quotation and estimated time of repair before leaving the dealership.

Enhance your R&DDesigned for the specialised environment of the automotive industry, Toughbook and Toughpad research and development solutions combine ports to allow for connectivity to legacy measurement and testing devices whilst offering rugged 3.0 USB ports to meet the future needs of the customer. Our devices are used within many areas of the R&D value chain, such as CAD CAM, measurement, calibration, reflashing and road testing, when performance, screen resolution and durability really matter.

Shape your smart factoryMinimising vehicle assembly-line downtime is a priority, with a growing trend to move away from legacy fixed systems and equip production engineers with Toughbook devices to be able to operate around the facility. They can rely on the full-shift battery to enable true mobility and can react quickly to go to the point of failure when the line breaks down, ensuring operation is restored and unnecessary delays and cost are avoided. The Toughbook is also a common tool for performing end-of-line quality diagnostic checks, as used extensively in the aftersales area. Thanks to the Internet of Things (IoT), our intelligent, interconnected systems and devices, are streamlining activities and improving productivity across the entire value chain, to create manufacturing plants of the future – smart factories.
