Editorial

Acquisition of surgical skills and technical competence has been the bedrock of surgery. During thesurgical training program for postgraduates, technical skills improve with practice, and surgical judgmentdeepens as a result of exposure to evidence, patients, and outcomes. Modern research in surgicaleducation has examined the steps involved in attaining motor skills. One of the basic premise of thistheory is that the earlier stages of teaching technical skills should take place outside the operatingtheater; practice is the rule until automaticity in basic skills is achieved. This mastery of basic skills allowstrainees to focus on more complex issues, both technical and nontechnical, in the operating theater. Most professionals reach a stable, average level of performance and maintain this status for the rest oftheir careers. The number of hours spent in deliberate practice, rather than just hours spent in surgery, isan important determinant of the level of expertise. Deliberate practice calls for the individual to focus on a defined task, typicallyidentified by a teacher, to improve particular aspects of performance; it involves repeated practice along with coaching andimmediate feedback on performance. These programs have subjectively certainly started showing the fruits of the labor put in, yetvery few institutions have applied any objective evaluation and apprasial process to see how well these training methods haveshown the results on the field where it really matters, i.e the operating theater.

The World Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons (WALS) would be holding International Conference on recent advancesin Minimal Access Surgery at World Laparoscopy Hospital in Gurgaon, NCR, New Delhi (India). There are plans for advancedlectures on specialized topics for surgeons, urologists and gynecologists in collaboration with the leading surgeons of India andabroad. WALS looks forward and appreciates the time given by surgeons for sharing their experience and knowledge. In future, members of WALS will be able to advance their skills in these International Conferences.

Let us be focused on achieving the objective of making basic and essential minimal access surgery facilities available to everyindividual of world. Let us stimulate this sense of judgment within each one of us, which will erase our individual egos and makeus work united in achieving the objective already mentioned. And thus, reach the salvation of our association.
