Students will study aspects of world history beginning with pre-history. Students will recognize that history and culture influence a society and will identify current world events and connect those events to topics of study. Additionally, students will recognize how civilizations change within and across eras of time. Students will enhance their geographic skills and foster an understanding of other cultures. Students will recognize how the past influences their lives today and will continue to develop their reading, writing, and critical thinking skills which will prepare them for the next grade level and provide value in other academic disciplines. You must also join EdModo and Remind. The join code for EdModo will be posted the first week of class. The Remind code is on Mrs. Murphy’s website under the “Parents” tab. SUPPLY LIST Plastic pocket & prong folder with five sheet protectors in the prongs (class binder) Colored Pencils One pocket Folder with 3 fasteners and one divider (link on website) Flash drive • Pens (any color but red or pink) FOLDER / BINDER SETUP Place this syllabus as the first page of your binder, in a sheet protector. Bring your folder / binder every day. GRADES (50%) Classwork and homework (40%) Tests, quizzes and projects (10%) Personal Responsibility* Students begin each quarter with a 100% personal responsibility grade. 5% will be deducted each time a student is unprepared, fails to pay attention or participate in class, or is tardy. ASSIGNMENTS, LATE WORK & EXTRA CREDIT You are responsible for remembering to turn in all assignments. Assignments must be turned in to the correct period’s bin on Mrs. Murphy’s desk. Late work will receive a deduction of 10% for each class period the assignment is late, for a maximum deduction of 40%. Late work will be taken up until two weeks prior to end of the quarter in which the assignment was due. Extra credit, if available, will not be allowed if a student has any zeros.

COURSE OVERVIEW

Welcome to 6th Grade World History! Students will study aspects of world history beginning with pre-history. Students will recognize that history and culture influence a society and will identify current world events and connect those events to topics of study. ABSENCES

If you are absent the day an assignment is due, the assignment must be turned in at the beginning of the next class you attend in the appropriate bin on Mrs. Murphy’s desk and the assignment must say “ABSENT” at the top.

CLASSROOM RULES

1. BE RESPECTFUL! 2. NEVER LIE. 3. Raise your hand and wait for permission before moving, speaking or making sounds. 4. No cheating, copying or plagiarizing. (If discovered, all students involved will receive a zero). 5. Cell phones/electronics must be silenced and in your backpacks. Phones will be confiscated if seen. 6. Be in your seat when the bell rings and stay there until dismissed. The bell does not dismiss you. 7. No passes allowed the first or last 10 minutes of class. Only one pass allowed at a time. Sign out and in.

CONSEQUENCES

1. Warning. A student will receive a warning and possible consequence when they are violating a class rule. 2. Behavior Assignment. If a warning does not improve a student’s behavior, they will receive a behavior

assignment, which requires that the student complete a written assignment. Once a student misbehaves three times, a referral will be written for each subsequent issue.

3. Referral. In-class privileges will be revoked and administration will enforce additional consequences. CLASSROOM PROCEDURES

1. When you enter the room, turn in any work and get your class folder. 2. Begin work on the journal question as soon as the bell rings. You have five (5) minutes to complete the question. 3. Look at the board configuration to understand the day’s lesson. 4. When the dismissal bell rings, clean your desk and push in your chair.

PARENTS

Please browse Mrs. Murphy’s website with your student and click “Parents” on the homepage for tasks you should complete to make the year go smoothly.

MATURE TOPICS

Supplementary materials including videos may be used from time to time to advance the curriculum. Topics may include, but not be limited to, videos demonstrating the mummification process and Spartan training techniques. Parents, if you would prefer that your student be excluded from certain topics, please indicate as such on the Student Information Sheet sent home the first week of school.

ADDITIONAL HELP

If additional help is needed, an appointment can be scheduled with Mrs. Murphy. Please speak with Mrs. Murphy directly or send her an email requesting an appointment.

CLASSROOM NEEDS

For any parent wishing to contribute to the needs of the class, particular needs include tissues, Band-aids, clay (link on website) plastic pocket & prong folders (any color), paper towels, and small candies and candy bars without peanut butter or nuts.

GOOD TIMES AHEAD

There are plenty of fun activities planned for 2018-2019. If all rules and procedures are followed, you will have a great time in this class! ☺
